We had our early afternoon ferry from Hydra cancelled with no reason given so we took the next one that was at 8:30 pm which caused us to get to Ermioni much later than expected so we got a hotel room there instead of driving to Nafplio. We had never driven in Greece and I was worried about driving those curvy roads in the dark. We got to see a new part of Greece and only lost 1 of our 5 nights in Nafplio. Sometimes you gotta just roll with it.

Remember when my ferry from Tinos got stuck and they didn’t know if there was a ferry the next day? 😂 I love it when you don’t have a set schedule and it doesn’t matter if the ferry leaves or not 🥰. Now that’s life 🙌🏽

That was crazy! I have never seen that before. I wonder if that ferry ran this year or if it needed more repairs.

in our 5 trips we had one ferry canceled because of weather on Kos, got the next one out in the afternoon to Leros no harm no foul, we also got caught up in a ferry strike in 2017 where we were leaving Heraklion going to Paros, the strike lasted 2 days and we were supposed to be on Paros for 3 days, so luckily our Travel Agent arranged all of that for us, though we did have to go to the ferry office in Heraklion every morning and get new tickets, the ladies there were very nice so we bought them flowers when we finally got a ticket off the island. other than that we have been pretty luckily.

Thanks for the tip, Tiffany! Started on my journey from Athens a few weeks ago and have hit Syros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros and am in Antiparos now before heading to Santorini tomorrow then home on the 1st. I have been very lucky thus far with ferry schedules ( knock on wood). But it definitely helps to have a more open schedule and a relaxed approach. I originally was going to hit Crete as well but decided because of their recent bad weather to save that for another time.

Hi Passport girl, a question, I’m arriving in Athens 21April 2023, for 4 nights…do you think I need to book my room or just get one when I arrive in the Plaka area. (I’ve often just got a room on arrival in many cities.)

a local Athens taxi driver (very professional and courteous) we met thru our Airbnb host advised us to purchase ferry tickets at Piraeus port because of the possibility of cancelation due to weather at this time. Weather was good and no strikes on Oct 22nd. All good and not very crowded. We took a short trip to Aegina

I always buy tickets from local travel agents. Then it's much easier to deal with situations like this than if you've bought a ticket online from a third party site. In early September there was some similar bad weather and I got stuck on Anafi, so had to get a refund then change my plans. The ferry that you were on only went to Paros and Naxos I think then turned round. Although it was almost empty it was probably a lot fuller on the return journey.

I've been island hopping for the last 31 years, sometimes twice a year so probably about 40 trips. So I must have taken a ferry something like 250 times. I can think of 3 times when I've had a ferry cancelled. Once when I was getting a ferry from Mykonos to Rafina to catch my flight home, so I missed the flight - I've never taken a ferry to catch a flight on the same day since then. The second time was when I couldn't get a ferry from Donousa to Koufonissi in a morning but I got the ferry in the evening to Katapola, stayed a night then got to Koufonissi the day after. Then last month I got stranded on Anafi and stayed three extra nights which meant I missed out going to Folegandros.

It wasn’t an issue for me as I never picked up my physical tickets. I try not to have physical tickets now. Once they decide the boat was going, I went to the Blue Star office and they changed it right there. But as you said it doesn’t happen often.

Like Colin I always buy my tickets at local ticket offices as I go along. They are always the 1st ones that know if a ferry is cancelled or substituted and it's the most easy way for a refund if necessary. In more than 3 decades I only had 2 ferries cancelled (maybe I have had some luck in that). First time was stuck on Ios for 2 days as all ferry traffic was suspended for 48 hours due to a medicane and the 2nd time the agent informed me a day ahead that the ferry would not sail due to expected bad weather.
