Exquisite metal work. Very probably better made now than when it came out of the factory. Makes me chuckle that there’s a resurrected Bedford CA van imbued with all the same craft, care and workmanship as in this Ferrari. Tremendous!

davejaguar66 the last video on welding distortion was 1:43:43 long, somebody gave it a thumbs down within 10 minutes of uploading it. That means somebody is sad enough to be following me and they don’t even like my videos 😂 It takes all sorts...

Hi Trev. . . Just finished my first Semester of MIG welding at my local College. Our lecturer is is big fan of yours & suggested I take a look at your blog. Have to say I'm now also a big fan. I'm currently having a Back-to-the-future experience with a 1974 Fiat 124 Coupe that just spent the last 30 years parked up under a carport. (I owned the same model car from 1984-94). The body is in quite reasonable shape (all things considered). I decided to take a chance on this car because (as far as I could tell when inspected) the turret (including F & R screens) & floors were 100% rot free (impressive for one of these believe me). The LH rear wing is heavily corroded along the window ledge & lower rear edge but I recently found an NOS panel. The reason I'm chewing my fingernails now though is that after going around the car more intently yesterday I noticed a 1mm bubble on the top of the front RH wing just below the brazed join where it joins to the A-Pillar. I poked a screw driver in there & ended up with a 1/2' hole. The perforation is all below the A-Pillar / Wing join (i.e. rust is all within the wing). I would really appreciate your advice on how to best tackle this repair as the metal directly under the hole is also badly pitted. I remember that back in the 1980s (when there were still a few of these cars around & getting fixed) local repairers used to cut out the top corner of the fender with a horiz cut along the belt-line crease & a vertical cut upto the front edge of the scuttle - this gave them enough access to treat the invariably corroded metal underneath. I can handle that but I'm wondering whether I should also un-stitch the complete outer skin of the A-Pillar upto the brazed join with the turret in order to properly treat the metal underneath (i.e. with POR15) or whether I can leave the (solid) outer A-Pillar skin in place & access inner A-pillar cavity by drilling 6 x 3mm holes into the inner side of the pillar adjacent to the edge of the windscreen (which is cracked & has to come out anyway. .) My plan would then be to spray POR15 into the pillar cavity via those holes & close them off with brass afterwards. . . . . Bear in mind that the only section of the inner A-Pillar that I can actually see is the very bottom 5mm of the inner A-Pillar - and that's with the help of a cheap USB Endoscope - I have no idea of the condition of the inner A-pillar higher up (which is what's bugging me...). I'd hate to go to the trouble of un-stitching the outer A-Pillar only to find it wasn't necessary because the metal further up is rock-solid. . . Gee Ess I would personally remove the rusted area right back until you’ve got completely rust free metal, you’ll then get a better understanding of what’s going on underneath. Cheers Trev 👍

It's sad when you think of the amount of rare vehicles including one off builds from the 20s 30s 40s 50s that lost their fight to rust. Lines formed by craftsmen in steel never to be seen again.

Gerry Lea Ask yourself Gerry what would be the classic you’d most like to have? Regards to practical restoration, if you’re going to buy something that has a lot of corrosion issues, always aim to buy something where panels are readily available, skill aside this will be the biggest determining factor as to whether you complete the project. Cheers Trev 👍
