I just saw this movie. I would rate it as excellent. It's immersive, emotional, shot beautifully , with lots of attention to detail.
C'mon.. Marriage Story was visceral and stunning. I dont see how anyone who went through a parents divorce, or their own isnt moved by that fillm. Adam Driver was phenomenal. RIP Ray Liotta.

Well I did go through a divorce as a kid but for whatever reason I wasn't into Marriage Story. Felt like Baumbach had already covered that terrain in superior fashion in 'The Squid and the Whale'.

Seemed pretentious to me like you can see them trying to shoot scenes for an Oscar so artificial

Much obliged for the kind words! The New York Film Festival was an absolute blast and I'm sorry the whole experience is over. The fest featured some of its best programming in years.
i was 9 or 10 years old when manhunter came out had to beg my dad to take me to see it 2 times in the theaters then over the years i have seen it in every format it has been released, to many times to count its still my favorite of manns movies

I love 'Manhunter' as well. The style always sucks me right in.
Michael Mann was a renegade of his time. He is a masterful director of action realism. Top 5 Collateral Last of the Mohicans Heat Thief Manhunter

Truthfully wasn't blown away by collateral like everyone else, feel like its a bit overrated
Mann has basically become a fun version of Malick at this point and I fucking love it.
Rush (2013) was a good movie too

Good call! All I remember is the scene with Natalie Dormer but that was super hot.
The last scene where Al leaves that doorway in The Insider....beautiful.

Took me a few years to appreciate just how good that movie is. I wasn't that into it when I caught it in the theater because I wanted another 'Heat' but after revisiting 'The Insider' I was totally blown away.

Well before I do my top 10 I'll be revisiting his entire filmography so I'll be sure to look at both with fresh eyes.
Public Enemies will always be my favorite Mann film🔥🍿
will skip this, now that Heat 2 has been somewhat announced by Mann himself. so stoked for what is in store for us for the sequel.

I'll be rooting hard for the flick to connect with the right audience when the flick comes out at Christmas.
Great review, James. Mann is a legend, and so damn glad he got the chance to make one more film. Really hope it is not his last.

Drive by Ron Howard is technically gorgeous and has emotional stakes also...
About that ending. I know what you mean. A few times in the past, endings have snuck up on me, and I was slackjawed, and wondering what the hell I missed. The ending of "Zodiac" was like that for me the very first time I saw it in the theater. As much as I loved the movie, I didn't get the sense that it was winding things up in that moment (despite how much time had passed too!). I also didn't know anything about the Zodiac case beforehand, so i didn't know that the case was unsolved. But with "Ferrari", my brain caught up with the proceedings about ten seconds before it actually ended. Very close, but at the last minute I realized that him walking away with the kid was going to be the last shot! Whew!! lol
Noah Baumbach is a top-class film director and writer

His partner is overrated Greta Gerwig and Barbie should not be nominated for 8 Oscar’s and most definitely not best picture supporting actor, supporting actress or adapted screenplay it’s a joke and he co wrote that drivel
I might check a couple of Michael Mann movies I haven't seen yet before this one but if you liked it you'll probably enjoy the documentary Ferrari: Race to Immortality (2017) which is about the Ferrari drivers during the 50s. Two very different racing movies you might also like are Pit Stop (1969) and Redline (2009). If you're interested in something similar to the Mille Miglia with bikes instead of cars the closest to it these days would probably be Road racing with races like The Isle of Man TT or the North West 200, you have tons of footage online so you're in for a treat!
This is not a racing movie. It is about three parents.
Great review as always James, loving your work ❤. Michael Mann is my all-time favorite director so look forward to his movies more than any other. Heat 2 was an excellent read, so I really hope he gets to make it. Adam driver as Neil McCauley or maybe Chris Shiherliss ? I do think Miami Vice, Public Enemies and even Blackhat are underrated. I recommend reading the book Public Enemies is based on, it reads like a novel and covers an amazing 5 year period of American history, John Dillinger, Alvin Karpis, Bonnie and Clyde, Baby Face Nelson and birth of the modern FBI. All the best James ❤
FAST!

Top ten MM! Any other stand out actors in the supporting roles for this film? It would be great to see an unknown catapult into a rewarding career for all.

RUSH was the shit
Bullfighting, horseracing, motor racing are sports. All others are games.
I disagree with all of Hancock's discussion on speaking accents. Unless it's distractingly terrible, it's going to be fine. The accents in this movie were fine.
I like Shailene Woodley but she does not belong in this movie. I would have thought that Ferrari had an American mistress not knowing the details of his life. Still, it was a very good movie.
Saw this last night, didn't think that much of it, the racing scenes were excellent, however, didn't find his personal life of much interest and this is where it was a little flat for me.

Why do biopics suck this year? First Oppenheimer and now Ferrari. I want to learn what drove the people and why they were successful, but it's just some random window into tumultuous periods in the later stages of their lives with no real heroes that left you wondering what the hell happened at the end?
@gobtukvideolar

Oppenheimer was fire. What do you mean?
You’d think Adam Driver of all people would have learned that the world no longer accepts Americans speaking English in a foreign language story. It’s insulting to its audience. Michael Mann and Ridley Scott are old enough to say to the financiers NO. ..I’ll watch Ferrari when there is an Italian dubbed English subtitle version out.
does the movie have gore? or gory scenes?
@jbird_inc

Yes be warned there is a recreation of a horrific car accident where a crowd of people are wiped out by a crashing car and the aftermath is shown in gory detail. It was very out of place in this type of movie and is quite disturbing.

@@jbird_inc that scene was so jarring for alot of people because I'm not very knowledgeable about ferrari and his life/legacy so that scene caught off guard and not being psycho or anything but I loved how it was handled, except for the gci

My opinion was that it was unnecessary to go to that level of depiction. It ruined the tone of the movie and could have been handled much much better. It is why my wife would not want to watch it. Ruined the film for me honestly although the rest was excellent.@@jbird_inc
Crap movie. So many bad cuts, poor dialog, pathetic italian/english accent, acting and more. The only thing well done in this movie is the gory crash. But that kind of sums up the movie, a crash.
