A couple small things to point out about the Millie Miglia: Fo De Petargo the driver of the 330S that crashed was offered a fresh set of new tires but refused! He wanted to keep up with the remaining Maserati still in the race. About 22 miles from the finish he hit a damaged road reflector that ripped into his front left tire and launched the car into a telephone pole and rolled into the people. It was a terrible tragedy then and still is now. The trial Enzo was on lasted 4 years and Enzo asked the judge to bring on auto engineers to examine the wreck the authorities had confiscated after the race. They discovered the tear in the front left tire and investigated the crash site finding the damaged reflector. Enzo was cleared of all charges rightfully so and Ferrari carried on. The important thing to note is that it regardless of if De Petargo had opted to put on a new set of tires it wouldn’t matter…. He still would have hit the damaged reflector and still crashed horrifically. Travelling at around 150 mph and hitting something that sharp and dangerous will blow any tire fresh or used. This was simply a bad accident that could have happened to any driver at the time. It was not the first and not the last accident in Motorsport history

I have always had this romantic notion of all these long distance races like the Mille Miglia, Panamerica, & Targa Florio but I am aware of the crazy accidents that have happened & the many lives lost during that era. So it will be nice to see a raw & honest portrayal of that in this movie.

Thank you! FvF is the superior film. I'm in disbelief that Micheal Mann had anything to do with this film. It was a rushed, high-budget retread of every KZread video essay about Enzo and Ferrari. Seeing hardcore Porsche-guy Patrick Dempsey in it was also a small betrayal. It's sad that bio pics over the last decade or so all play out like SNL parodies.

Excited to watch this. The Mille Miglia crash sounds gnarly. I'm not surprised why no movie (to my recollection) has covered the even more disastrous 1955 Le Mans crash where 80 people died (most by decapitation) when a Jaguar became a ramp for a Mercedes.

  • @RobertEHunt-dv9sq

    @RobertEHunt-dv9sq

Actually it was not a Jaguar that became a ramp for the Mercedes, it was Lance Macklins’s Austin Heaney. The Jaguar you mentioned was ahead of the AH and started the chain of events by braking at the last minute and pulling into the pits. The track layout at that time significantly contributed to the accident.

    1) Ferrari wasn't broke in 1957, Enzo was still piggybacking on the amazing play he did to get the ACI and FIAT to leave him the Lancia racing team in 1955. As a matter of fact, he got not only the whole Lancia Corse lot (save for 1 car that was kept by Gianni Lancia) but also 50 MILLION Liras PER YEAR from FIAT. All of this was to keep Lancia from falling in the hands of Mercedes-Benz, which gave an offer as soon as Lancia went bust. 2) The race was called Mille Miglia ("Thousand Miles") because it always ran on a public road course of at least 1000 ROMAN miles (1478 m instead of the 1609 m of the British mile). The first event was in 1927, with the last being in 1957 with the "Tragedia di Guidizzolo". 3) Ferrari didn't NEED the Mille Miglia to keep afloat, he already had F1, Le Mans and a whole lot of F2 races to pin him up for that, on top with the deal with ACI and FIAT. 4) The "Enzo never loved Laura Garello" bit is outright LIBELOUS. Pray to God that her family or Piero Ferrari don't see your review. If he didn't love her, would he have left Lyon in 1923 for the last race he ever drove for Alfa Romeo because of a telegram from her? Would he have done absolutely EVERYTHING to save his son Dino, which he had from Laura? Would he have fucking FIRED HALF OF HIS FACTORY over his employees complaining about her coming in and commandeering some favours? I'd say no. Also, she didn't make life a living hell for him "because he had another chick"(which would be Lina Lardi, mother of Piero Lardi, now Piero Lardi FERRARI), but she was concerned about the finances of the team, in which she had put half of her belongings to run all the way back in 1946. 5) Mann represented Ferrari paying a crapton of bribes to journalists to keep their mouths shut, and commandeering a legend of sport journalism like Rancati to write an apologetic piece on Ferrari. Which... is completely stupid: Ferrari did never bribe anybody, as this never popped up even when the Police searched the offices in Maranello and his own house, and every Italian knows that the Italian press always goes heavy-handed with criticising Ferrari for every faux-pas.

Very inciteful comment. There is definitely some hollywood dramatization this movie, and I think there always will be in these type of movies. Part of me thinks we should expect that, but it's hard when it deals with reframing of the relationships and motives. Becca now hates Enzo for how he treated his wife in the context of a movie. That's not fair. The jimi hendrix biopic showed him as abusive a relationship and the actual person had to come out and said he never laid a hand on her and was a complete gentleman. That kind of stuff rubs me the wrong way. Sure, they probably have disclaimers, but still, it pollutes peoples mind with false narratives.

I saw it. It was good, but I thought the movie was a bit anticlimactic since it was essentially a prequel and only covered a single year in Enzo's life story. I was expecting a lot more to the story. When the credits rolled, I said loudly thats it? The scenes with bodies flying through the air and the opening race scenes,, the cgi or vfx, or whatever could have been a lot better in quality too.

I just watched Ferrari yesterday, and I think the movie suffered from an identity crisis. I thought it was a little too dark for me, and the pacing was extremely slow. The CGI was a tad wonky, rubber band like, and ragdoll-like. Perhaps it was my mistake, I was expecting something kind of like Ford v Ferrari and was NOT like that at all.

Alex I saw 'Ferrari' yesterday and I agree with all the positive points you pointed out in your review. As to your dislike of the CGI, I take exception. As someone in his 70's, I knew the story of the incident of the 1957 Mille Miglia, and I had witnessed the carnage that was motorsport through the 1960's and '70's. The screams that my audience let out yesterday during the two obvious CGI scenes that required CGI, were loud and chilling, I wasn't expecting that much of a reaction. I appreciate and value your review, I've subscribed and look forward to more of your content.

Agree, they tried their best to recreate the accident the most faithful way possible and putting in some ‘Fast and Furious’ CGI would have not been realistic but junky Hollywood staff. I actually appreciated the rawness that this CGI gave because the perception that it gave me and the audience was just what it was and it was in reality pure heartbreak, it was not supposed to be the unrealistic pompous American fake CGI of an Action Movie, definitely raw and straight to the point was the right choice for this movie.

Nah that CGI was beyond terrible in terms of quality of the CGI… if the first one wasn’t comically bad then the big one would have gotten a pass. First one was just unnecessarily horrid…. Issue is CGI was just insultingly bad compared to the other car scenes and sounds. Just can’t believe they went with that.

I think the depiction of the crash was shocking, but not necessarily realistic. Unfortunately there are quite a number of crashes involving spectators, with real life footage available. It usually does not look nearly that shocking, mostly because the debris and dust that is thrown about, and the chaos of people running about obscures one's vision. It was unecessarily, and unrealistically graphic imo.

The only problem I had with the CGI crashes is that the cars flew too high! These are cars, not airplanes! And I think they could have done without showing de Portago's body after the crash; that was a bit too graphic. Otherwise, they should have made Adam Driver look older and heavier, but the acting was first rate. On the whole, I enjoyed the movie.

I think the movie was okay and got better in the second half. The retro filter it has (like Ford vs Ferrari) is beautiful and makes sense, and the sounds are good too. One thing i found strange during the racing scenes was the shakiness of it. I don't mind vibrating camera to simulate the road bumps but the shots, especially the rear looking ones, were not very janky. Once you notice it you can't stop.

Grand Prix is still the best racing movie. I found this to be mostly a slow boring movie about a broken man & marriage due to grief with the cars and racing an afterthought. The racing scenes were the best part of it but I expected so much better from Mann. 2 racing scenes were standout moments but the rest of the racing action was shot by the numbers even though they were eye candy-colored and sounded amazing. Driver's accent was way off too though he got the physical acting down well.

i enjoyed it more than i was expecting because so much of it was about a story i didn't know. the racing bits that i know very well i put up with because i know its an entertainment, not a documentary. the dicing on the mountain bends i don't think would ever have happened. on a 1000 mile race which really a time trial you just didn't need to do that. the scene of the final accident we could have seen the crowd gather, the car crash, and the aftermath, without needing to see the slaughter. i think someone was inspired there by all the footage of the 1955 le mans crash. i'd like to have had a bit more of de portago's back story. it was lightly brushed over well in to the movie that he was a sportsman and a playboy, but the impression you got was that he was just one of the drivers. more of an explanation who his co-driver was would have improved the story i think.

I have watched several reviews of the film. Based on those , and yours, I am no longer excited to see it but will go to try to enjoy it and determine if my observations carry throughout the movie. Not shown in your review, an interview with "Ferrari" which left me intensely disliking the guy (Driver) as a person, and he did not convince me as an actor that he fulfilled the roll. He also blew it when he said Jag- WIRE instead of Jaguar. That is not how an Italian would say Jaguar nor anyone else who is familiar with the car and company. . as do most "car guys and gals". Another bother was the phony Italian accents while speaking English. Why not speak Italian and run sub titles, far more authentic . Or better yet, hire Italians. Too much sensationalism and "affects" (effects) a la Hollywood, and typical stars rather than actors. European and British films are superior in that respect. Enjoyed the video, thanks and Happy New Year.

I recently watch two current films, both of which were about a very famous married man who had extramarital relationships. One was Ferrari, the other was Maestro, about Leonard Bernstein. The Bernstein movie was a biopic, going chronologically from when her first conducted in New York City, until the end of his life, several decades later. The Ferrari movie covers a span of only a few weeks in 1957, but spends much of its time exploring human motivations and relationships. Surprisingly, Maestro provides a lot more visual and audio appeal to its audience, but it lacks the soul that Michael Mann’s film displays.

Me and my buddy saw the movie the other night. And honestly? Not only did the both of us fall asleep for a few minutes, but we left before the movie was finished. And I'm not throwing hate towards the people behind it or even the actors cause I truly do love some of the people in it like Driver & Dempsey. But I was having a really hard time following the plot of the story itself, and even more so? I had a harder time understanding what some of the things the characters were saying at times. I know that the movie's set in Italy, so obviously they have to sound Italian, and I'm actually Italian myself and some of my older relatives have that thick accent. But half the time, I really felt like I needed subtitles just to understand what was being said. So overall? This just wasn't my cup of tea. If you we're able to connect with the movie, then okay, that's good for you. But ya, this movie just wasn't for me. I'd rank it 3/10.

There were just a few scenes accomplished using cgi. 95 % of the movie was done by a couple of trailer rigs with cameras with a huge crane on them. Also a few scenes were completed with drones as well. IMO they went all out on this movie. They actually constructed about a half a dozen cars of the period from scratch. as a Ferrari hater having this be about Ferrari's life more than the race is more than enough to put me off from watching it. the cars are gorgeous but having to focus on that old man over the cars is not it for me

actually Portago had a good tire but his tire was cut on a metal cats eye. Ferrari was threatened with Catholic excommunication, however proved the problem was a cut tire. Italy afterwards deleted the cat's eyes in the road for some time. Not sure if they are still banned. I wish they brought such races back, allowing for more thorough crowd protection. Rallies to my knowledge still have fans literally next to the road, whether dirt, gravel, tarmac, or snow.

Ironic, Piero Ferrari himself made a video talking about the film and the inaccurate details however few lol. He had some complaints but definitely enjoyed the film dude… his name is on the cars sooooo obviously people can have complaints about the companies products. Ferrari helped create the film directly and the family themselves. They obviously know film is subjective and people will have a range of opinions. This idea that Ferrari shames people for saying anything bad about them has been proven false on more than one occasion. In fact feedback is much appreciated. Seen tons of stories of Ferrari owners having any issues with their cars and their respective dealerships handling it with kindness.

I just didnt know how in depth they were gunna go... it was clear to me who had no idea what was coming... as half the theater gasped... my gf actually was mad at me for kinda spoiling it... But this movie was AMAZING your review is spot on. Movie was amazing!!! The cgi pulled it down to a 9.5 out of 10 for me... otherwise it would have been an 11 for sure

I saw it opening day. I am very disappointed. I really love Michael Mann's films from the 70's to 90's. But with this, a swing and a miss. The acting was very mundane, one doesn't empathize with the characters. Even Penelope's portrayal isn't engaging. How did the story fall so flat? This is no "Ford v Ferrari" storytelling. And the CGI crash sequences are laughably bad, how did Mann approve of them is a mystery to me. I really, really wanted to like this movie. But I cannot recommend it.

It can’t be any worse than Ford vs Ferrari as that was pure shite. Sooo many obvious inaccuracies just to blow ford’s horn of nonsense. Yes they won le man but failed to accurately show why and HOW. Was deeply looking forward to that yet like so many car enthusiasts who actually have knowledge that is readily out there- was in contrast so disappointed by that film. Tell the story- not you’re warped biased interpretation of it. I trust Michael Mann to do a far better job so fingers crossed
