The trip was possible thanks to Magalhaes and especially the information sent to him from Portugal. But possibly the one who had the complete information was Rui Faleiro. Portuguese Astrologer. Elcano was not a main character in any part of the trip. We can not historically attribute this achievement to a secondary character. This is evident in the story narrated by Antonio Pigafetta. Elcano's biography was not written until 400 years after the voyage. He is undoubtedly too obscure a character to attribute such an achievement to him.

Excellent presentation, I am an American who has lived in the Philippines, near Cebu and would like to add a few things. Legend has it that Lapu Lapu was killed by a rival to his cheiftanship, other Filipino scholars say it was an assassin sent by Humabon. Also, the shoulder patch of the Philippine National Police Proudly depicts Lapu Lapu with sword and shield, because he is the First enforcer of Philippine Law. All Respect to the Philippines and Lapu Lapu the warrior!

Magellan's hubris killed him. I grew up in the Philippines and I would like to add some few details. You can check the veracity. This account was based on Pigafetta, the priest and chronicler of the voyage of which I learned as a student in the Philippines. First, he attacked at low tide. The Spanish fleet was too far away from the beach. Then they were wearing metal armor that's too heavy and hot. Their weapon did not work well because it got wet. And according to our oral history, Datu Lapu- lapu created the famous U shaped formation where the best fighters hiding on both sides and the old, men and women at the center of the U. The purpose is to trick the Spaniards to attack the middle and the best of Lapu- lapu fighters flanked the enemy on both sides. Then the rest was history the west did not know well. On a side note let me add, the Spaniards left an image of baby Jesus to Rajah Humabon because they converted to Christianity. About 40 years later, the Spaniards came back and they noticed that the Humabon's people were gone and in hiding in the mountains. They were persecuted because of there new faith. When they saw them they found the image of baby Jesus blacken and burnt in an altar still worshipped by the new found Christians. That image still exists today and enshrined in the Basilica of Cebu.

I would not rely solely on Pigafetta and his naval logs. He claims hundreds of men attacked them. (A datu is not a king but a cheftain who commands hundreds or less warriors in a tribe) If you think about it, Magellan is a Portuguese navigator in a ship owned by the Spanish king. What would Pigafetta tell the king upon seeing only a ship survived and did not even fulfill its mission to bring back "spices". So they traveled around the world for garlic? Come on that is bs. Pigafetta wanted to save his ass and the king of Spain at that time from disgrace. Thus, they sent more expeditions and believe me they are not looking for that gosh darn garlic.

both of you are wrong..you know the truth is that magellan men report to the king of spain they told the king that they fought bravely and magellan got killed in action..but that is a lie of course magellan was killed by of course lapu lapu but not in a fight.it was an accident.mistaken identity..you see lapu lapu being a datu has its own ordinance and law in his place as datu or chief.his primary law is you can disturbed him anytime but not when he is taking a shit and everybody in the village knows it the penalty is death ..you see that time they dont have toilets..so lapu lapu always takes a shit at the beach..and one of lapu lapus secret weapons is hes nails..of course at that time people dont have nailcutters right...so lapu lapus nail is long and pointed and has a venom in its tip.so upon hearing that lapu lapu would not submit to foriegn ruler magellan decides as a educated man to go to lapu lapu to talk and convince him to become christians..so as powerful ruler he went alone to impress raja humabon that spaniards gots balls as steel..at that time april is the season of santol one of lapu lapus favorite fruit.he swallow santol seeds becuz its delicious..so back to magellan at the first light of the day in finally arrived at the beach of mactan..so not knowing where lapu lapu live he seek to find someone or some villager. then he notice a figure of a man sitting on the beach..not knowing it was lapu lapu taking a shit constipated with the seed of santol..and of course magellan doesnt know the law of lapu lapu..he sneak behind lapu lapu to ask for direction..and then it happens..lapu lapu wsa angry and surprise he thought it was an assassin..he claw magellan in the neck with the venom of snake on it..magellan was done as lapu lapu surprise that he just killed an innocent man scratch hes forehead and forgot it had venom and fell also between his shit with magellan on the other side as magellan was dying with bubble in his mouth the effect of snake venom he mutter the last word and say "you dumb fuck i was just askin for direction" lapu lapu replied hes last word also you idiot you didnt know my law.and die so it was like a draw when people find the two dead body they thought magellan and lapu lapu was fighting over a shit becus it was between them..so that is the story..magellans mens are wise if they told the king of spain the truth they will hang them becuz they didnt protect their leader

@@zebulundocallas What you say makes sense. Though I doubt Pigafetta would embellish too much, as he had no trouble chronicling the embarrassment of dozens of Spanish women on the ships that got pregnant from Filipino locals. When they arrived, they noticed that majority of the local men were mostly naked and wore augmentations to their penises. A rod threaded through the penis, attached to small wheels with chicken feathers. On inquiry, they were told it enhances copulation greatly, word got around and some of the lower class women tried the local men, which of course confirmed what they were told. Before long dozens of women were put in the brig for sleeping with the locals, which resulted in multiple pregnancies.

Zheng He's during Ming Dynasty ships were 4 to 5x larger than Columbus' and Magellan's ships. These treasure ship expeditions were huge in scale (60 to 200 ships) compared to these European's expeditions and done about 100 years earlier. Also, the Indians/Arabs were trading in that region. Even chief's name was "Raja" (Indian title) How do you think the Europeans learn to navigate that far? They used the Arabs' maps. Europeans think they discovered everything by themselves. Great Story. I had not realized that Magellan's ultimate fate was not a matter of common knowledge. As a filipino and an amateur historian, I find the death of Magellan, compelling but unnecessary. If anything,it was a tragedy. Arrogance may have played a part in Magellan's decision to attack, but the full story also includes the power play between the local native tribes. It is surmised that the attack on Lapu-lapu was actually requested by the rival chieftain as a way of expanding his own territory in Mactan and Magellan probably knew he was being played, but he wanted to curry favor from the local chieftains. However, he grossly underestimated the battleground scenario and he did not realize that Lapu-lapu was the native version of General Robert E. Lee. A brilliant tactician in his own right. First Magellan's men burned some of the villages of Lapu-lapu's tribe as a way of instilling fear in the natives, but Instead of blindly charging the Spaniards in anger, a foolish tactic, Lapu-lapu waited for a more advantageous position. Seeing that Lapu-lapu's forces were not engaging him in battle, Magellan chose to press the attack instead. Not fully realizing that Lapu-lapu had actually laid men in the shallow waters in ready for ambush. With heads barely above water . The Spaniards had to leave their boats and wade 50 meters to shore. When the ambush was sprung, natives armed with bamboo spears and fire-hardened sticks, clubbed the Spaniards into the water. It was not too hard, all they had to do was trip the Spaniards in full armor and hold them underwater, where their armor would actually prove to be a big detriment to survival. After Magellan was killed, his men went back to the their ships and back to the "friendly tribes" to lick their wounds. But the locals, sensing their weakness, invited them to a dinner, where they turned on them and massacred 24 Spaniards. This treachery forced the Spaniards to flee the Islands, and limp back to Spain. What-if's abound. What if Magellan had been more willing to be diplomatic instead of militaristic? What if Lapu-lapu had lost or simply acquiesced? Half a century of European influence.... Big dreams, political intrigues, treachery, religion... This was a heroic but tragic tale worthy of Shakespeare.

A passage from Victor Hurley in his book, Swish of the Kris, wrote, “Instead of the rude obsidian knives of the Aztecs, the Spaniards at Lamitan found themselves opposed by a flashing kris which was the equal of their Toledo blade.”

Magellan's voyage takes place during the period we call the Renaissance. This period follows the fall of the Roman Empire and the Dark Ages which lasted nearly 400 years. An amazing book that chronicles the Renaissance, this 'explosion' of technology, exploration, science, etc., is titled 'A World Lit Only By Fire', by historian William Manchester. It will be one of the most entertaining and informative books you are likely to read, ever!

As you mentioned, his navigational skills helped shape and connect the world. Lapu-lapu was a great man as well. It is true that he fought for his land and his culture, but what he is more remembered for in the Philippines is that he is the first of many freedom fighters.

I am cebuano and majority of the people here claim to have descended from Lapu-Lapu, although this may not be certainly the case, but we feel a special bond to our first hero, everybody here is proud of our ancestor. He was the first native who have killed a very giant figure, namely, Ferdinand Magellan. And this fact will be a blot in the history of Western Exploration and Conquest for the rest of our history.

I'm Filipino and lived in the Philippines during my early elementary school years and they taught us all about Ferdinand Magellan, Lapulapu and the Battle of Mactan. Lapulapu is seen as the hero while Magellan is the villain and I saw Magellan as an evil man as I grew up. But during my adult years, I realized that Magellan wasn't so bad since he was just exploring the seas, trying to convert people into Catholicism and working for Spain while avoiding the Portuguese even though he's Portuguese himself. The true villain in this story seems to be Rajah Humabon who not only made Magellan and his crew fight against Lapulapu, he also had the survivors poisoned to death when he realized Magellan has failed.

The History Guy missed an important feature of this voyage. After Magellan died his first officer took over as captain & the ship headed back for Spain. When the ship finally arrived back in Spain it was found that the entire crew was sick with scurvy except for ONE man, the captain Juan Elcano. Spanish naval officers questioned Elcano & he told them he ate the exact same food as the crew so he should have also contracted Scurvy. However when they inspected his cabin on his map table they found a small jar of fruit preserves which Juan said he snacked on while working on his charts. It turns out there was "just" enough vitamin C in those preserves to prevent him from getting scurvy. So that's how we learned what prevents scurvy & from then on barrels of lemons & limes were taken along on long ocean voyages.

I thought it might be interesting too that after the Battle of Mactan, Humabon held a feast for the remaining Spaniards which turned out to be a trap. Those Spaniards were poisoned and killed while the others who didn't participate in the feast were the ones who to get out of the place alive. One of the men who was in the feast blamed Enrique de Malacca (Magellan's translator). Lastly, there is the question that: if this translator Enrique can understand the language in Cebu, PH - could he be the first person to actually circumnavigate the world by virtue of being brought by Magellan to Spain and then back to the Philippines?

Very good video. My wife is from Cebu City and we always fly into Mactan Airport when we visit home. After Magellan was killed, about 40 years later (as you mention) Legaspi showed up in Cebu City and built Ft San Pedro, which still stands. In fact, the old water well still yields water. There are many other historical facts about the Philippines, which our schools omit from our High School history, such as the resistance of Rizal against the Spanish (and his execution), the original Filipino declaration of independence from Spain by Aguinaldo, and how the US basically abandoned support for Aguinaldo when they felt he was no longer needed. During WW II there were many Filipinos who fought with us, against the Japanese, and were later denied the US Veteran categorization they had been promised. But, as you point out in the video, America was certainly not the only national entity focused on their own agenda, at the expense of local people

Correct. Gunpowder, horse cavalry, and steel weapons and armor weren't alien or mystical to the pre-Hispanic Filipinos. Plus since the inhabitants of the Philippines were in the path of trade routes through East and Southeast Asia they were exposed to the same diseases the Europeans were exposed to. So yes, the Spaniards had a technology advantage, but not one as pronounced as in the New World. Nor did most of the population in the islands drop dead from disease. The result was the Philippines under Spain was able to keep much of its culture and native languages, and the Spanish language never really took root except in the families of the Hispanized elite.

You rellied solely on Pigafetta. A datu cannot command hundreds of men. A cheftain is merely a leader of a tribe and only has more or less a hundred warriors or he would be a threat to the Sultan not the Raja. According to some University of the Philippines research documents, Pigafetta might have written lies to save his ass from the king of Spain. Only a ship returned with a failed mission to locate the land of "spices".

There is a video made by Epic History - Simple History KZread channel collaboration that the remaining ship succeed in finding spice islands and returned to Spain with profit many times higher than their investment.

It also makes sense. I have been reading the English version translated by Roberts and there were inconsistencies about his report. Anyway please check out the story before the arrival of Magellan of the book Aginid Bayok sa Akong Tawarik by Jovito Abellana. A dance epic of ancient Cebu tranlated from pandan leaves written in the old Visayan script kabadlit.

As a Portuguese, Magellan certainly knew where the Spice Islands were, as did the Spanish officers who knew how to read charts and maps. It was an alternate, westward route they were after. After the Battle, the two remaining ships made it to the Moluccas, had taken in spices and were prepared to return to Spain but the Trinidad started taking water.

I found about this while in Ermita, Manila while reading as I waited for my fiance to get her K1 visa in 2016. I was staying 2 blocks from the embassy when the Maute IED was left by Ocean Park that fizzled and was thrown in a trash can by the US Embassy. My wife's home village is about 20-30 km from Marawi in Bukidnon. I am retired teacher and enjoy learning through your videos when I am not making history myself :-)

It's actually March 16, 1521 when Magellan landed in the Philippines. They even made a song about it

While the song and Pigafetta's account state March 16, it is actually March 17 due to Magellan's crew passing the International Date Line. Hence, one day was added.

Reading books about Magellan Vasco da Gama and Sir Francis Drake is like reading a Tom Clancy novel.
