I’m 51 and also love nitro finishes. I like to feel the wood on the neck too. The wear patterns are awesome on nitro it’s like a fingerprint. Something the grandchildren can have to remember grandpa with.

Great playing and the revoiced pickups sound great. I imagine that the quality of these Vintera 70s Telecasters is better than those made in the 70s as they could be hit and miss. Also the poly finish is accurate as that is what Fender used from the late 60s onwards. Very impressed.

I got the "road worn" Vintera tele Deluxe, which has a medium-heavy relic, so a beautiful feel and looks. The one model that a relic seems to work with the best are telecasters, the "working man's" ax! I was astounded at how good the pickups sound, the 500K pots really help bring-out the highs, compared to older versions of the WRHB that used 250K and were somewhat muddy. The original version use 1meg. pots, so I may get a Deluxe wiring kit with upgraded switch and jack, plus 1meg. pots, to bring-out all the highs. I can turn down the highs if it's too much, can't bring them back if they aren't there to begin with - eh? I love all the "road worn" Vintera models, and even though the tele Deluxe never used nitro originally, I still prefer it with nitro, and it might be easier to get a road-worn than strip it? I love the sound of these pickups so much, that I'm likely going to try some of those newish CuNiFe WRHB from Fender, Lollar, Novack, or others. Lollar makes a "low wind" version said to balance better in a Custom with tele single-coil bridge pickup, but it might sound better in the Deluxe too - more clarity and detail perhaps? I seriously love these pickups, as I said, and these are some of the best tones I've heard from your guitars, even though its likely the least expensive - except for the Epiphone Riviera perhaps? I usually like a neck with more chunk to it, but this rounded C fills my hand nicely, and allows me to play easier than the chunky necks, I can get around so easily on the Deluxe its a joy to play!

Thanks for the introduction to your latest acquisition Paul, that model always intrigued me, the Fender version of humbuckers, with the split pole positions low/high - I haven't tried the Eb tuning, I have used the full tone reduction after I discovered John Fogerty used that tuning on some of his classic hits to get that really rich, swampy sound. Nice guitar mate!

To me that neck profile is too thin. A tip for players who prefer the old necks, better check one out in a store before you buy online. Heck, you should not be buying online at all and support the guitar shops in your country.

I have a reissue Fender Tele Deluxe with a trem built in...limited run I think. Unlike some here, I love the big headstock and it certainly feels like an original...my mate had one of those back in the day and it was great which is why I bought a reissue. The pickups are a bit muddy though and I'll get some alternative Wide Range issues. The original Fender Tele deluxe's were finished in poly. I've seen quite a few of the old poly finished fenders , and they definitely "age" although not as much as nitro cellulose. Not sure if they use a polyester finish these days though...

Hi Paul, I'm reviewing lots if your vids, could spend my day ( I'm retired, haha). Funny I bought that 72 Tele Deluxe made in Mexico few years back. Never loved the single coil tele sound, but trying those fender wide range pick ups made me to buy this axe. Agree too shiny that polyester varnish, especially on mine which has funny Gold Sparkle color, further more bad feeling on the glossy fretboard. But what a very good guitar. Voodoo chile and Kashmir proved how good this guitar is 👍 ( I sold a 52ri tele and a 60baja tele, keeping that 72dlx)

  • @paulstaffordcook8799

    @paulstaffordcook8799

    Жыл бұрын

Actually, I was in Newcastle about 4 months ago and got to play a pale blue (maybe sonic blue?) nitro roadworn Vintera Tele. But it wasn’t the Deluxe, it was just a 50’s type of regular Tele. My thoughts were two-fold. As I was playing it, I loved the “vibe” and they general roadworn look of it. I could have happily sat there for hours just ripping on it. But on the flip side it was very evident how the time spend is very different between Vintera roadworn and Fender Custom shop. The Vintera was definitely not as buttery smooth and “old” feeling as anything from the Custom Shop. But I guess that’s obvious when you compare the prices. I gotta say though, that I’ve played various Vinteras….. Teles, Strats, Jazzmasters etc, and I’ve enjoyed every single one. To me they are a real sweet spot when balancing quality v’s cost.

Sweet review and demo, Paul! I used to have an “alternate” version of this model with a whammy, 22 frets, a traditional headstock and Gibson H’s. Thought it would replace both my tobacco Epiphone Les Paul and my ‘72 Thinline Tele, but those pickups being microphonic at high gain ultimately made it just another guitar taking up space. I’m curious. Have you ever owned and played a Rickenbacker?

  • @paulstaffordcook8799

Good question! I’ve played a few Rickenbackers, but I’ve never been tempted. In fact the only reason i’ve played a few of them is because my Dad has at least two (maybe 3). He’s a massive Beatles fan. In fact you can see them on my vid entitled “My Dad’s amazing guitar collection”. They’re gorgeous but all my heroes played Gibsons and Fenders so they just never crossed my mind to really own one. Maybe one day :-)

Hi James. Yes, I would (and have) put 11s on a Strat. I’m currently without a Strat, as I’ve never really bonded with any Strat.... but if I DO get a Strat again, then my favourite set up is definitely 11s, but tuned down a half step. That seems to hit the tonal sweet spot for me. On a different note, I get my backing tracks from KZread. I just type in things like “blues backing track in Am” etc, and after some trial and error I end up finding something I like. Cheers for watching 👍

Good question! Well, on reflection, the answer is Yes! It’s an easy guitar to play that functions faultlessly. And these “Wide Range” pickups will cover all genres pretty easily. So yes, I don’t see any disappointments with this guitar from a newer players perspective. Have I kept the guitar? No. I sold it. But purely because I’m 50 years old, and I’ve spent my life refining my collection to around 5 wonderful high end guitars (see this vid kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZWiF2aeBZsaXpLw.html) that I wish to grow old with. Had a relecked tele and must admit even though i knew it was new it felt like a 50 year old guitar, but as usual , sold it and bought another tele, a 49" sony 4K :) Playing just fantastic as usual Paul, thanks for uploading, keep em comin

Selling a tele(caster) for a tele(vision) - love it ! 😂. My Dad’s not seen it yet (except on KZread), but he is a lover of the big headstock..... I can totally dig how you feel about that.... in my head, I see that headstock and think of the 70’s..... my heroes tended to play older guitars. Cheers Charlie, watch this space, some good stuff coming up 😀

Funny you should say that.... I sold it for those very reasons 🤣. You’re right, whilst it’s a good guitar with really no faults, it is what it is - a mass produced item that gives you the feeling it’s been made to function. Just like my fridge, my TV or Hyundai motor cars. I’ve since fallen into that same situation, only a few weeks ago.... I bought the £400 Gretsch G5220 Jet. Another fine guitar that, ultimately, I’ll be selling on because it doesn’t compare to its very expensive Japanese brother (£2.3k), as evidenced in my recent video.

Hi xblackcatx13. Good subject for a debate.... I can hear it now, comments like “real men play single coils” / Humbuckers are much warmer” / “single coils demand that you squeeze for tone from your playing”...... and so it goes. Personally I am a traditionalist. But I’m about to rip open my lovely custom shop ‘52 relic Telecaster and stick a Bare Knuckle humbucker in the neck position, like many of the old timers (Albert Collins etc). How mad am I?! 😃

I dont really get the relicing idea at all. People buy new guitars and then hate it when it gets its first ding. You can even buy b-stock guitars at reduced price. What is the difference between b-stock (genuine damage) at % off the price or fake damage at multiple% of price. I find it all very annoying.

My very first guitar was a fender dreadnought. I took it everywhere as a teenager. Without a case. Its been chucked in the back of a van, took on train journeys, dropped down the stairs and had various stickers stuck to it. Use your guitar. Use the hell out of it and it will age.

  • @paulstaffordcook8799

But who has 40 years to wait? Relic’ing gives you the look and the vibe right away. I’m not a sweaty guy, nor do I gig live any more. So my guitars would take way too long to age naturally. Yes, relic’ing is a divisive subject.... My Dad hates the thought of it - his guitars are pristine. But the fact is that relics are now perceived to be the most desirable guitars to buy. Everyone’s doing it and charging a premium (Fender custom shop, Gibson’s Murphy Lab etc).

I love the vintera series, I think it's a very smart move from Fender. But the dumbest thing they did was to add the polyester finish on them. I personally love when a guitar ages, it's like a war companion, it gets more and more mojo as years go by. With this shitty polyester, the history of the guitar won't show.

You’ve hit the nail on the head Clint. And so that is precisely the reason I recently sold that guitar. It was a good guitar, but I already have what I consider to be my 5 essential guitars to grow old with..... a Les Paul Gold Top, a ‘59 reissue Les Paul, a 335, a relic Tele and a relic Strat. All 5 are custom shop Gibsons / Fenders, all nitro, all very full of mojo and vibe. So the Vintera just doesn’t fit in with them. Cheers for watching my vid 👍
