what finish is being applied and are you sanding it on or using a cloth? Is that epoxy glue, polyurethane, oil or what?

Looking at the original version from before the conversion is done, it’s got me curious whether Fender employed a former member of the Ibanez design staff in the design and execution of this bass. In any event, I dig the final outcome. Did you apply any additional lacquer to the fingerboard after taking out the frets?

Beautiful work! Is that your own bass, or do you work on other people’s instrument?

I can understand why heat is being applied to the frets. Why is Solder (hopefully pronounced the American way) being applied?

Heat transfer...but I wouldn’t do it. Too much work for not much return...unless you have a really stubborn fret.

@@dive7733but why use actual solder rather than just moving the hot soldering iron across the frets?

@@allenwilhelm7799With soldering iron itself the contact area between fret and iron is fraction of the area while using soldering tin. Imagine round tip of iron and round fret touching, the area is extremely small. The area is crucial for heat transfer, that is the reason of car radiator or CPU heatsink shapes, they are made to have the biggest possible area of contact with air to which they transfer the heat. The tin covers much bigger area of soldering iron tip and the fret and acts as heat conductor. It has the same purpose as thermal paste used between CPU and heatsink. In practice you can heat the fret few times faster this way. This way you also can avoid overheating the fretboard wood, because it shortens the process. Overheating the fretboard may cause problems with fretboard finish (it can be lacquered, finished with oil or so), melting the binding if you have one, in extreme case it can also melt the glue used to fix the fretboard to the neck. On maple fretboards you can also burn or discolour the wood if you heat it for long time.

Just if you like it or not. I guess you can get more precise intonation, if you play perfectly. It also has a cool sound

The soldering iron is there to heat up the glue and make it easier to pull out, there is no reason to actually put solder on the fret lmao

There is a reason, soldering tin makes heat transfer much faster as the contact area gets much bigger with it, try it yourself. LMAO

Heat doesn’t transfer in wood. You put a soder on the wood, you will burn it. Heat on the frets transfers to the glue without burning the wood…….lmao
