I agree to a point. This bass could be a little more "open," I guess. It was based on the 4 string '72 Jazz Bass Marcus had! At the same time, the preamp was an early "Sadowsky" model. Unlike the preamp it features now (18-volt). You think this makes a difference? I like this bass for what it is, though. 'One of the lightest weight 5 stringers I've played. Very well-built, well-made and comfortable.

Hey Max, proud owner of a Black 5 string Marcus here. Been struggling to setup the bass to play live but it always came up short when compared to my 5 string Stingray. Tried different strings, amp tone settings to get a usable live sound. Finally got a decent sound just by adjusting my pickup height down. When I play live, I tend to play harder and that produced a distorted squashed sound. Now, my Marcus is just starting to sound amazing. The lows are great but still harsh in the top end.

Hi Max, I also could not resist and I've also bought one ;-) But at one point I'm not so happy with this bass monster. The bass / treble tone controls for the active mode in my opinion not an ideal control range. If I turn up about half of the control range, the bass sounds too undifferentiated and "oppressive". What do you think on these things? I use the amplifier and speakers from Epifani.

Max is fine! You know, I would say yes to that question. But you did say "old" southern Gospel, right? The "Marcus" is more toned for a rhythmic and solo bass sound. I have one and IMHO I don't think it's that great of a bass for what it cost, but I've had it for a few years and I have done some slight modifications like changing out that godawful preamp and I also put in a pair of James Reed Vintage pickups wound to the 77 specs and as far as a preamp, I put In an old Bartolini tc3 that I had and also had a true bypass switch installed so if I'm in passive mode and would like to switch back to active, I can either use the onboard Bartolini circuit or I can bypass that unit and use my Sadowsky out board DI/ preamp but had I not done these modifications, I'm pretty sure I would've gotten rid of this bass. In retrospect I think the MM5 looks better than what it sounds. YMMV

WHAT CAN I SAY, ERIK?! I thought it was just me! 'Hate to admit it. But I agree with everything you've said about this bass! The "shine" wears of after awhile. And you realize, although it's a finely built bass, the sound is acceptable at best. I was very naive to think I'd be buying "Marcus's" bass, y'know?! Something that was close to to his sound. Read this: Only Marcus can sound like Marcus! That said. You would think they'd of of made a better preamp and pickups on the Marcus 5 bass. They may have taken us for granted a little!

Hey Max I am blessed to be the owner of both the 4 and the 5 string models and I can truly say they both have hi points and lows. I'm fairly new to bass but I can tell they are both awesome compared to other fenders, but my choice is the five over the four but I still love the beautiful crisp sound I get from the 4 ow that I have added nylon flat wound strings.
@tracywilkinson18209 жыл бұрын
I've had mine for 7 years. Love it. It's the only 5 I own, I had a Mike Lull 5 and my Marcus beat it out. Mine is the burst, I put all black hardware on it (getting the string trees in black from Hipshot was a bitch- they did not carry them, Mike Lull had to custom order them for me) and I put a Hipshot bridge on it. I've thought about switching out the pre for an Aquilar OP-3 but have not pulled the trigger just yet. I used this bass on a sub gig a little while ago and it just sounded so bad ass I'm thinking of putting it back in rotation. I mostly play 4 string jazzes.

This will be my next baby, although I already have a 2012 USA Fender Deluxe Jazz Bass V and it also has an active/passive switch but the deluxe has a passive tone control that I think the Marcus Miller doesn't have. Can you please comment on this feature? I plan an getting it anyways but even though the MM is about $600 more expensive than the American deluxe, I think Fender should include tone control on the MM, 4 or 5 string. It doesn't have the sound I was expecting. For the expense, other basses sound better.
I love this video bro.

Loving that "Marcus 5," huh?!
@5:44 Was that 'Mighty God' by John P Kee?
Hi Max, I also could not resist and I've also bought one ;-) But at one point I'm not so happy with this bass monster. The bass / treble tone controls for the active mode in my opinion not an ideal control range. If I turn up about half of the control range, the bass sounds too undifferentiated and "oppressive". What do you think on these things? I use the amplifier and speakers from Epifani.
This is off topic for this video, but what are your favorite jazz bass pickups and active preamp? Just curious since you have demo'd pretty much everything.

FENDER Noiseless pickups! SADOWSKY on board preamp! I've favored them the most!
but do use really ever use the b string? i see alot of these" new players and bands" with these 5 strings and never hear or see them play the low b...also im really thinking of getting one i have a jackson js3 4 string and the js3 5 really looks like a fast player and im assuming its like my 4 string plus i really like the neck and binding .i wish i could find one here were i live so ive seen your vid and a couple of others and they sound and look awesome.i want a 5 for drop tunning only
No. I'll bet they do sound fine! Both basses USA made?
nice...so are you going to take of the pickup cover?
Beautiful Bass!!! And given the value... and Excellent price!!! LOL... but it's gotta be worth 4, 5 or even 6 of your less expensive models! I initally thought that they went cheap on the bridge... then you showed the thru-body... and WOW... Nice! American made and a Keeper. And thanks again... I suggested an SX short scale white Jazz bass, that you picked up "accidentally", to our rhythm guitarist, for his daughter. Excellent build, great price, and the short scale is perfect for her.

David Faulconer Yeah you're pretty much on the money, with the price! Glad that SX worked out! And you're welcome!
Thanks for watching!
Nice bass. Keep buying. I'll keep watching.
Yep, both my Corvettes are. Looking to purchase some lumber? ; )
Thanks.
Agrred! Thank you.
Oh man you got some sweet basses. I have the 2013 Miller USA model 5string, with the special gray body and Gold inlays black pic guard, I will be uploading some new vids. soon peace!
Max is fine! You know, I would say yes to that question. But you did say "old" southern Gospel, right? The "Marcus" is more toned for a rhythmic and solo bass sound. I assume you've heard Marcus Miller play-style and sound. Traditionally you may fancy using a FENDER Precision Bass. For that deep sounding tone? What do you think?
Yessir!
Well Earl i think you showed some self restraint... at least you can say you didnt get a new bass till the following year! nice bass my man! : )

'Appreciate that, thanks.
Enjoy the reviews, Earl!
That's true!
Agreed!
How does the Marcus Miller (MIM) bass differ from Made in USA models?

Mexicans in Mexico make the Mexico version. Mexicans in America make the American version.

maxproud I believe marcus miller used sadowsky preamp in his. Yours was probably fender pre.
max have u, got a 77 or 76 jazz bass they have a damm fine sound,
marcus basses have a great tone i think. never played the 5 string version.
Agreed, bro!
Good deal, bro! Play it in "good-health." I assume your getting the 5string? Not the 4string? Just asking!
yeap it is a beauty
Hey Max I am blessed to be the owner of both the 4 and the 5 string models and I can truly say they both have hi points and lows. I'm fairly new to bass but I can tell they are both awesome compared to other fenders, but my choice is the five over the four but I still love the beautiful crisp sound I get from the 4 ow that I have added nylon flat wound strings.

Cool! Unfortunately I don't have this bass anymore. I know, I know! I said I'd keep it. But It soon didn't "do it" for me. I was searching for the "Marcus" sound. But only Marcus can sound like Marcus!

Woe! "Flat-Nylons?! That must sound interesting! Sort of unique for that bass. I'd love to hear how that sounds! You say you're fairly new to bass? Well you own a couple of the best! Great choices!
Congrats, it's a real beauty and sounds clean and tight. No mods necessary I'm assuming ?
awesome bass do you prefer 5 over 4 strings ? if so why
Where's "here?"
I lean toward the Ken Smith! Maybe?
+maxproud this Marcus Miller is the same with the jazz deluxe ??

+Manuel Avila No, not mostly.
By the way, you should do a tour vid of some kind one day, would be awesome.
On a side note, I feel you bro. I have 11 Fenders myself, J and P!
nice bass!

Thanks Ellis! But hey, that BRUBAKER you have ain't shabby at all! You gotta good bass, sir!
Hey, I know there is plenty of Fender fans on here, so I thought I'd ask for advice and opinions on the pros and cons of USA compared to Japanese Fenders. The main reason I'm curious is because of how many people I've overheard debating on which is actually better (without actually saying why) - so.......
Nice Bass!!! What year is it?
