Fender Ed O'Brien (Radiohead) Sustainer Signature Stratocaster - Review & Demo
Музыка
In this video, Sam takes a look at the new Fender Ed O'Brien, guitarist with Radiohead, signature Stratocaster...
Check it out here: www.pmtonline.co.uk/fender-eo...
Surprisingly for such a huge band, the Ed O'Brien Strat is the first ever Radiohead signature model. It's loosely based on his favourite guitar for live work, a customised Eric Clapton Strat, and features a Fernandes Sutainer pickup which, when combined with effects, allows him to create those beautiful, ethereal soundscapes which are such an essential part of the distinctive Radiohead sound.
Spec-wise, this fantastic guitar features an Alder body, bolt-on Maple neck with a meaty 10/56 "V" profile, vintage-style tuners and a vintage synchronised tremolo. Alongside the sustainer pickup are a Texas Special single-coil in the middle position and a Seymour Duncan JB Jnr humbucker at the bridge, offering a huge range of tonal possibilities.
The Sustainer pickup works in the same way as an eBow, by creating a magnetic field to resonate and vibrate the strings...but whereas an eBow can only sustain single strings, a Fernandes pickup can sustain chords! It's controlled by two additional switches, the first turns the pickup on and off, whilst the second toggles between sustaining either fundamental notes, harmonic notes or a mix of both.
Cosmetically, for a signature model it's pretty simple, no flashy finishes of logos, just a subtle "Flower Of Life" engraving on the neck plate. Supplied with a Fender gig bag.

A Stratocaster that I actually want
Thank you for actually playing Radiohead in the guy from Radiohead's guitar review.
You blew the Anderton's non-review of this into the weeds. Not a guitar for everyone, but one that can go places where a standard Strat could not venture.
Fun Fact: This guitar has exactly the same circuit and pickup configuration as the Jazzmaster shaped Fernandes guitar, that The Edge (U2) played on the Popmart tour back in 1997/98.

And relating to that.... The Strat Ed O'Brien used during the OK Computer tour as we know was a Clapton signature, but the Strat The Edge used on the Zoo tour was also a Clapton Signature (probably what gave O'Brien the inspiration to buy it)

fun fact: Ed gifted one of his signatures guitars to The Edge and he composed Love Is Bigger Than Anything In It's Way, and you can see him playing this guitar live
Slight correction: The three knobs are for Volume / Tone / Sustain Volume

Actually it's Volume / Tone / Sustain amount. Kinda like an "attack" control.
Now, that's how you demo a signature guitar. Brilliant work, mate!
Ed O'Brian Strat.... I know... I'll play Jonny Greenwoods telecaster Riff 😂

haha, at least he put Street Spirit in there!
Flower of Life is actually a term coined by Drunvalo Melchizedek in his book The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life. It's related to sacred geometry which it makes a lot of sense in this kind of guitar, with all the ethereal sounds you can take out of it!
Great review. What’s funny is I knew the Coldplay comment was a joke but was still triggered haha.
Yea Coldplay invented The Flower of Life. Coldplay also invented the piano.

Coldplay also invented the yaaawn. Then there's the Rihanna and Beyonce collaboration thing. Not cool. Very not fucking cool. But they never had any real credibility or proper musicality in the first place, so why not sell out while they can. Just generic chart shit really. I don't like.
Only review I've seen where they actually played Radiohead songs. Great review.
Great playing. Really thorough demo.
I got one 6 months ago and have been considering exchanging it this week, while I’m away from home. Never seen this demo before now and now cannot wait to get back to my baby!! Thanks for an amazing video.
Very good clear demo and great playing - good stuff.
Never cared much for any sig guitars but this one sounds great and those gimmicks are pretty lovely. Great demo, mate!
I still come back to this video every now and then to hear that amazing demo again. Can't wait to learn guitar, burn through cheap Squiers, probably giving up on the way, and if not, cry over how expensive this is and how much I want it still.

I own an American strat but primarily play my offset tele squier. Nothing wrong with a cheap guitar if it’s made well, and skill is always more important than gear. Earn your skill slowly and obsessively like everyone else, it’s worth it. If it were easy everyone could do it and then it wouldn’t be special. These guys played for hours alone in their bedrooms and spent years acquiring their skill 1 hour at a time jamming and learning along the way. You can do it.

Fantastic review!! I loved this!!!
Straightforward solid review. Great axe and demo
Definitely picking this up. Appreciate the in-depth review.
Very good! Tops :) Thanx for the juicy playing:)
loved the demo
Did that Gemma was righteous brother! Killed it! Subscribing for sure!
Great demo!!!
If I was gonna buy a sig guitar this'd probably be the one. But for my style this just mostly tempts me to put a sustainer in one of my current ones! Great demo. Good playing. :)
Great review. Great strat!
nice demo! you just sold me this guitar.
Amazing Demo !
Bloody hell. I’ve just discovered this. I’m not a Radiohead fan but I love this.
Sam, that was an awesome demo
I actually have one. My friend who plays great played in the Beatles love show in Vegas liked the sounds it produces, but couldn’t get it to sustain. Me a synthesist actually ,he handed it to me and off I freaking went had it going from a reeves Gabrel distortion engine into a Meris Polymoon. He was astounded. Yep works just fine for me. And I suck but I’m not traditional and neither is this
I want this . And your playing , nice . Real nice.

This is getting purchased once released, brilliant demo.
Hi and thanks for the review! I found out that the Fernandes Neck Pickup is more hot than the JB Humbucker, can you confirm that? Therefore I missed the claasic Strat-tone!? Comments are welcome! Thanks and cheers
Great demo--thanks for posting!
Great Demo, really showed off the features of this beast.
What's up with the buzz on the Octave position in the sustainer?! I'm pretty close to getting one of these!
Were you using the Katana at the back for the demo? Sounded very good to me.

Yes, the Katana amps sound great. It's set at at 0.5w mode, allowing for nice warm, crunchy clean sounds and cranked overdrives without it being too loud...perfect for filming these demos. Cheers - Sam
When the Sustainer switch is off but the 5-way is on the neck position, does the Fernandes work as a regular pickup?

I’ve watched this video about a hundred times while I wait for mine to come in the mail
This guitar is a lot like Zappa's yellow strat which is something I've been looking for... I also happen to really like white strats and maple fingerboards so it's perfect. The pricetag isn't bad either. I'd replace the bridge with a Vee Blade though. Maybe put locking tuners on it. Besides Schecter there aren't many affordable guitars equipped with sustainers out there. I think I'll be buying this
Amazing guitar

Cool review. That guitar has two knobs reading Volume?

Hi Jim, Apologies, slight error in the vid...the guitar actually has a master volume, master tone and the third control (the second "volume") adjusts the intensity of the sustainer pickup. Well spotted, hope that helps :-) - Sam
Great review - just the job
Nice Review
What the differences between this sustainer and the sustainiac (Schecter)?
Nice demo.
Video ended way too soon, could have listened to you playing way more radiohead on that bad boy. Between the Johnny Greenwood tele with lace sensors or the Ed O'Brien with the JB Jr, how does one choose? Lol
I got one and I love it, I put a bit more chunky strings on it and with my boss Katana and a simple foot switch to flick between patches it is fukin awesome!!! I highly recommend!!!
It has 2 volumes and 1 tone. The middle tone knob is a master tone, and the volume pot closest to the input jack i believe controls the sustainer volume.

Hi William, yes you're right...it was a slight error in the vid on my part! I've mentioned previously on other comments like yours, the guitar actually has a master volume, master tone and the third control (the second "volume" knob) adjusts the intensity of the sustainer. Excelente demo 👏🏻 Deseable y curiosa strat 🎸
Hey, great demo of the Fender Stratocaster, I love the tone! But I have two questions, I don't like the idea of the 9 Volt Battery in the guitar. Can I get a similar guitar without the battery? Can anyone help? Also, what model amp are you using? Thank you again.
@nicktheparanoid6282
6 жыл бұрын
Angel Martinez If you want a sustainer , you will need batteries. Thats because its an active pickup, but the battery only powers the sustainer, so even if you run out you can use the other 2 without any issue. Also, they’re using a Boss Katana at the 0.5 watt setting.
@colliedogjoy
11 ай бұрын
@@nicktheparanoid6282if the battery dies, the guitar is dead. All pickups are active, not passive. Not a huge deal.. my batteries last a couple of months before slowly fading, and the pickups draw far less current than the sustainer, so I can always tell they’re fading by the power of the sustainer.
what preset are you using on that boss katana when you played lucky from the album OK computer ?????
I want this.
What's the phaser and reverb pedal that you used in the demo? Awesome job!
@PMTVUK

Hi Hakan, thanks! All tones and effects came from the Boss Katana 100 combo that you can see in the background, with the exception of a touch of ambient reverb that was added to the overall mix in post-production. Hope that helps - Sam Check out the Katana amp here: www.pmtonline.co.uk/boss-ktn-100-katana-100w-combo-amplifier
Fantastic review and demo! Would love to have one of these!
A Beautiful Guitar
Amazing demo
If someone can vouch if this is a full on strat I am gonna buy it this Easter. Does it have a the usual strat neck pickup jangle, 4th position chime, 2nd position quack (like Sultans of Swing) and bridge pickup bite/twang for country? I am looking to buy this strictly for clean stuff and to play just one song using the sustainer (U2 WOWY) as I already have a Les Paul for more heavy work. Please don't recommend an Ebow as it's clumsy and I dont like Fernandes guitars. What I need is a full on Fender Strat that sounds like a usual strat with the sustainer system already installed.
@4:58 Hm...there's actually two volume controls and one tone. With one volume for the sustain and one "normal" volume.
wow, nice playing
What's the difference in sound between a normal humbucker like on a hss model and the humbucker on this model that fits in the shape of a single coil?
First new guitar I’ve wanted in years, and it’s a Strat!!!! Weird
Is the star of this review the Strat or the Katana? Both are great.
Lucky was the perfect song to showcase this guitar.
That’s the guitar I really want
Mate, great pocket to your playing!
The first pickup he talks about is the sustainer pickup at the neck and then continues on to demo it, but yet the pickup selector is switched to the bridge position.. what's up with that?
So what would be the difference between this guitar and using a substainer pedal on a normal strat?
Can you please tell me the individual saddle sizes? I need to replace one of them but can't find the info on the spec sheet (I only see the fret size listed).
6:30 I totally thought he was mimicking the strings in Burn The Witch. I was like NO WAY he adapted the string section for guitar!! And its played on the head stock!
Have you tried the Moog Guitar? Wondering how different the two are from each other.

Street spirit (fade out) on my eob I covered it on my eob fender Strat and it sounded cool
I need it..
How could you say something so controversial yet so brave?
I never use the word awesome - but that was an awesome review.
Awesome guitar and great review. Now Fender, where is the Jonny Greenwood Telecaster.
Great demo! Hope you're prepared for all the folks that don't get your sarcasm 😀

What model is that telecasted behind you?
Want that guitar in buttercream and a modern truss rod set up. In a American made deluxe....then you get my money. Yeah baby, yeah!
Man, very, very nice work on all of those ok computer lines as well as the implementation of the sustainer! Absolutely fantastic! My respect goes out to you! I am in the midst of building this Ed O'Brian strat out of a stock Mexican strat. Everything will be the same except for the standard location of the 1/4" jack. I'm using the Fernandes FSK-401 kit and I'm installing locking tuners, the Tusq graphite nut and a Schaller 2 point floating trem. Has anyone tried that Vega-Trem unit? I am having a hard time justifying 300.00 for a trem. It may be great, I don't know. However we all know that they have maybe a maximum of 100.00 into the making of each unit. Approximately 200.00 per unit is profit. I'm a machinist so I know and understand the process. They knock out each piece on a CNC unit. I believe that they probably pay less per trem but I'll be overly safe in saying 100.00 per unit. 200.00 in profit per unit is a HUGE markup. I'm talking to musicians who aren't independently wealthy. I'm asking the everyday Joe who gets to play out 3 to 4 times a month. What are your thoughts please?
