I have this Mustang, and as a huge Mustang fan this is one of the best Mustangs I’ve ever tried. The bridge has none of the old issues but still the functionality and look! No bridge buzzing, no strings popping out of the saddles. And the overall build quality is stunning, the neck feels super smooth. You can play this Mustang as aggressively as you want, which isn’t always the case with the classic bridge. And the pickups are beautiful sounding, the tone never loses clarity even when off. The only downside is that it doesn’t have the original switching, because I do love the out of phase sound of a Mustang quite a bit! But on the plus side the toggle switch is faster and much easier to change pick ups on the fly. So it’s preference, it’s cool because I have two other Mustangs with the classic switching so it’s something different. Overall this an absolutely magical Mustang, a refinement of the Mustang. In my humble opinion probably one of the best ever made Mustangs. This is tied with one other Mustang as my favorite guitar that I’ve ever owned. Also absolutely loved this demo, I’m shocked that there hasn’t been more talk about this incredible Mustang. I think it’s the star of the performer series, the tele is damn nice too and the Mustang bass 👌

Thank you for your feedback! Great to hear from a veteran Mustang player. I’m still on the fence about getting either this one or one of the Japanese ones.

Brad Field no problem, it’s fun to talk about Mustangs! I’d say that you really can’t go wrong with either choice. The Japanese made Mustangs are damn fine instruments, extremely well built, very beautiful instruments. Arguably better than even some American Fender models in my opinion. I guess it comes down to what you’re looking for, if you want a very vintage correct Mustang, with the old switching, vintage correct fretboard radius, vintage smaller frets. And with the 60s model, very vintage correct looking as well with the white plastic tuners which are stunning and the patent text under the logo which is vintage correct. If that’s what you want then go for the Japanese one. I have one, it’s magical! But what comes with a vintage correct Mustang are also the classic issues, you often can’t bend the high e string too much when playing above the 12th fret without it fretting out, there can be bridge buzzing, the saddles cause it, the strings pop out of place when playing too aggressively. But even with these issues, it’s still a magical vintage correct Mustang. And a lot of those issues can be fixed by a good guitar tech if you want to. I just accept these issues because the mojo factor is bigger to me than the downfalls and I have other guitars that I’ll play if I want to do bigger bends and play more aggressively on. But if you’re looking for a Mustang that does it all so to speak, it sounds and looks like a classic mustang, it has the functionality in the bridge of a classic mustang. But has some modern features, like a 9.5 flatter radius that doesn’t fret out, it has medium jumbo frets, really nice tuners that may not look quite as stunning as the original white plastic ones but have a modern gear ratio if you care about that. Basically this new performer is like a workhorse Mustang where you can use it for pretty much anything, there are no limiting issues, you can go all out SRV on the thing, it can handle and do that. But it has these modern touches and it’s not quite vintage correct, doesn’t have the out of phase switching which is a very cool thing in Mustangs, some people don’t care for it, but it sounds amazing with funk and it arguably makes a Mustang a mustang to many people. It doesn’t have that. But it does still sound like a mustang through and though, the bridge feels identical but has deeper grooves in the saddles to hold the strings in place no matter what, no rattle. Like I said it’s a total workhorse. A refinement to the mustang. But if you want the vintage correct thing, you want the classic switching, you don’t care about the issues, because you want the Mustang as the character guitar it is, you prefer the feel of the vintage radius because it is very comfortable. And you can get around all of the issues, you can still do bends on most strings as you want and , totally go Hendrix on them. Play nirvana on. Then the Japanese one is your baby. They are both fine fine instruments. Comes down to your personal preference. Hope that helps. In the end it’s all about personal preference. I have both, I would’t sell either for anything. Absolute gems both of them in their own ways!

Atlas Zack it’s perfect for that stuff, you can very easily achieve the Nirvana sound using the same pedals. And Mustangs are great for those RHCP funk riffs, a lot of those songs almost sound like they were played on a Mustang. They have the Mustang “quack”. And the build quality and the neck on this one are exceptional quality, super smooth to play. The only downside to this model is the lack of the out of phase sound which is something I love, but everything else is pretty much a refinement to the Mustang. I think this is probably one of the best Mustangs ever made! And the pickups are slightly higher output than vintage Mustang pickups but still low output and still sound like a Mustang. I have a very nice strat that sounds magical, and the Mustang is a very different sounding guitar, both have their own mojo. If you want that SRV/Hendrix sound, a strat does it better. Although the neck pickup on a Mustang does very well doing that kinda stuff but has it’s own sound. But what I absolutely love about Mustangs is how piercing they are without being harsh. On the bridge pickup you can play something like the Bowie Rebel Rebel riff, or a T-Rex riff like 20 Century Boy or Get it On and the Mustang will do that stuff in my opinion much better, that bright surfy sound. It just sounds perfect, where as a Strat comes off more gaudy, muffled in comparison. The Mustang has the bite. So it’s very much it’s own magical thing, the Mustang and sadly such an underestimated guitar. The myth about it being so small is also a common misunderstanding. The Mustang is actually longer as a whole than a strat or tele if you ever have them side by side. The Mustang’s bigger headstock and body make it longer even though the scale of the neck is closer to a Gibson. But the Mustang’s body is narrower and thinner than a strat or tele. But it doesn’t actually look that small on you unless you’re a giant. A strat will look small too in that case:) sorry for such a long message. But I hope you’re able to try this Mustang out first if possible, always great to try first if you can. But it’s a magical Mustang.

Finally a good demo! awesome playing. Does the bridge reacts nice to heavy bends high on the neck? I had a similar bridge on my jazzmaster and the strings just jump out of the bridge!

nice composition; opening montage reminds me of Franky Valley and Four seasons, the break in "Can't take my eyes off you?" I think, that is the one; cool playing- like the guitar. Can play alternative rock, AND, spank...does it stay intune well, even using the bar aggressively?

Hi Sebastion, thanks! It works well for light tremolo effects. When you push it harder, it may gets out of tune. Cheers, Michael

A Fender Mustang without Leo Fender's wonderful ORIGINAL switching system including 'out of phase' is NOT a real Fender Mustang and thus not entitled to the 'Mustang' name. IMO. So, what else can we call it? Fender FakeStang?
