Hey Everyone! Today we're modifying the Fender Aerodyne PJ bass with a set of Delano FE/M2 PJ-MVC4 pickups! These pickups feature large pole pieces and deliver a clear rich tone. Let's see how they compare to the stock ones!
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

The Delanos sound hi-fi, almost like they're active. I prefer the stock pickups, as they would sit much better in the mix for the kind of music I play.

The difference I hear is that the Delanos are a little clearer sounding, especially with the tone down for sure.
I love the original pickups. They sound great
The Delanos at zero tone are the biggest difference. Much more open sound, not muffled. I have a Bill Lawrence, Wilde P, and an Epic Custom Shop J in mine with an Obsidian wiring harness only because I hate soldering.

Love Reech @ ECS! He'll wind a split coil jazz bridge for you if you inquire, so so very quiet! I have found you need to scrape the glue he uses off the bottom of the pole pieces if you choose to ground them with the shielding tape trick. I'm not sure he insulates the poles b4 he winds the coils, I had a PBass pickup of his that sounded like a truck horn whenever I touched the poles.

I have a set in my Charvel San Dimas and I'm never looking back
They both sound great but the Delano’s seem to clean up the tone a little and adds a touch of sparkle from those big poles.
Bass is amazing! I'm really pleased with how it turned out! Thank you Lobster!
I love how there was pole for this yesterday and now here it is! 😮
I'm with the group thinking, the stock ones sound just fine.
Both pickups sound great but I think I prefer the originals. Or a combination of the two: the Delano for the bridge and the original fender for the P-bass.
I think it’s a great upgrade. I’ve never been crazy about aerodyne demos. Although I heard one at a show once and loved it.
Those stock pickups have some attitude
I like the stock more even though I have Delano bias.
Stock pickups for me….More natural sounding but not much difference at all. Thanks for the vid.
I was super close to getting one of these. May have to reconsider
Stock, it sounds like a PJ; with the Delanos, it sounds like a PJ with aftermarket pickups. I like them both. The Delano compares favorable to most big-magnet replacement pups that I've heard. The mids are right where I like them, and I like the shiny high end and dense lows. All things being equal, I'd choose the Delanos, but I'm not sure I'd spend the money.
Love the Aerodyne. If I buy another actual Fender in the next couple of years, it's the odds-on favorite. I think the stock pickups sound great in the vid... its stock sound doesn't always blow me away in most demos, other than the P pickup soloed. Here it sounds great. I do think the Delanos sound a bit better here and there, esp from the open E up to maybe the C... but the Fenders definitely don't sound bad at all. Great vid. I definitely enjoy the longer back and forth comparisons. I sort of edited my own extended comparisons from your vids back when you were doing all the Stingray mods. Definitely think that's the best way to compare.
LOL came here to say that the stock pickups sounded very very well and not that different or worse than the delanos. However this is why you have done such a great job with this review. Not always its supposed to be a slam dunk and everyone got important information out of this swap.
I like the low end of the stock pickups, particularly the neck pickup.
Hi Lobster! I have an Aerodyne and enjoy it a lot - especially the slim neck. Thanks for showing us sthe upgrade. I've been thinking about putting in a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. 😀😀😀

The Delano J pickup sounds better soloed, however.
Not near enough difference to justify the swap. But to each their own. One issue with Delano is there aren’t enough comparisons to know whether you’re going to get an improvement in the swap.
Nice video. Those aerodyne basses are nice. The Delano pickups have that nice modern sound with punch. The stock pickups had the more traditional sound. Neither better or worse, just depends on preference.
Hmmmm, I have an Aerodyne P in candy apple red. I am tempted to say that the stock pups are absolutely fine. The Delano 's are certainly nice but it's down to taste I guess. The only issue I have with mine is the dreaded barrel jack that I have replaced twice and it still cuts out with a cable attached and is fine with a wireless. Great video as always Mr Homarus gammarus.
I would love to see the new Fender Aerodyne Special Jazz Bass ( j/j pickup configuration) in dolphin gray with Lace Aluma J pickups...that would be a perfect match!
The Delano pickups have better clarity and a bit brighter
I had one of these and it was my favourite bass I've ever had. I sold it years ago and it's one of my biggest regrets.
The new pickups are a blast! To my ears they sound better in every way.
I would have added a preamp if I wanted to change how the stock bass sounded. It was fine stock, and not changed enough by the Delanos to have been worth it for me to bother doing.
I just put Delano's on my mustang like 2 years ago. Crazy

There's a pic on my band mix
I got the Artec big poles from Guitar Madness for $25... Not as hot as I assumed they would be. Installing them in the Mark Hoppus MkII position, reversed and much closer to the neck. They're a little peaky but have a really sweet bloom, like fast attack/not as fast release on a compressor. Not as compressed as the BLawrence p46, but some. Lows are really clean and forward, nice harmonics. Did I mention they were $25?... 🤫
Sounds great. My hangup about Jazz pickups is the noise (I have 2 Jazz basses and a couple of PJs). I wanted to get an Aerodyne PJ but the noise factor was discouraging me. Thanks for making it looks easy. Helpful video!

In the 80's i thought that way about single coil j pickups. But I realized that true single coils are the only way to get the sounds I wanted. And you can't hear the hum while playing unless you're using crazy amounts of gain. Any noiseless J is a humbucker of sorts, either stacked or side-by-side in the housing. And if Jaco used single coils to make the music he did, thats good enough for me.

A boss ns2 solves that problem too!
Not sure if it's plausible, but I'd be interested in a Delano pickup comparison. Like their "high end" solid black vs alnico vs ferrite
The stock pickups sound great to me and I only hear a slight difference in the replacements.....might be another one of those lost-in-translation-to- video things
The mids on the Delano's sound strange to me. I like the stock better with the pick but for slapping I like the Delano more.
That difference in sound though! Giving me so evil scientist ideas with my harley B. Haha
I love delano pickups so much

BTW, even though this is a passive instrument, it is louder than some active basses. It just needs a shielding job and a noiseless J.
Dream bass, it is so beautiful... wish there was a squire version of this, so I can afford it q.q
I have this bass and swapped out the pickups for Seymour Duncan quarter pounds as I was looking for a good rock tone with the PJ. The stock pickups, I felt, sounded great when both were at 100%, but were a little weak when using just the P or just the J. I would mod the tuners and the bridge, but can’t find any in that cool smokey chrome. I love the neck - one of my favorites. The all gloss black is so cool looking, but is a fingerprint magnet. Love the tone of this mod and love this channel.

@@jasongordon1123 What about a Gotoh J510SJ-4 bridge in cosmo black? The exact type of bridge was also mounted on some Sadowsky basses.
Pickups in this model are the most important and they give THIS character. It is foolish to replace them with others.

I thought so too, but replaced them anyway with a set of Bartolini PJs which was (in my opinion) a massive improvement.
Such a looker-
The Delanos sound really good, but with the tone all the way up, those stock pickups have got a little sumthin goin on. With the tone rolled off, the Delanos sound a lot cleaner. I think I like the stock ones better overall.
You made this bass sound like it's a $1k nicer.
Dude, i almost got the cali blue adrodyne with the white pick ups. Gives me Vulfpeck vibes. It was a little too expensive and not enough reviews on them
It sounds better to me. I chose Bartolini and a Kahler tremolo bridge for mine. Cheers.
For me, the difference is very marginal. I’d be perfectly happy with the stock pick ups
Sounds great Was it the pickup Or was it the player 🤔
I may like the zip up more
The Delano pickups cost around 200€ in Germany. Was that 200 quid worth of improvement? No. Are they good-sounding pickups for which there are probably no cheaper alternatives? Yes. I prefer the Fender J and the Delano P.
The original pickups were a little brighter the Delano’s

They definitely are. I had my local guitar shop (Regent Sounds) order me one in 2020, just before they stopped production. By the time it arrived, we were in full lockdown. So I had to make special arrangements to collect it. Of all the basses I've ever played, this one is the Holy Grail. Disclaimer: I did make a few modifications to it.
Both sound great, but the Delano wins on GIANT MAGNET points.

Not the best comparison here. The atock pickups sound great. Other than a slight mid bump with the tone rolled off the Delanos both sets sound so similar its hard to tell them apart. I love your videos but this one missed the mark.
Stock 6:29 Delano 6:53 at 100% tone. Stock 7:15 Delano 7:39 at 0% tone.
