Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai. India's Double Win in 1994 In 1994, India won two of the most prestigious beauty titles : Sushmita Sen won Miss Universe in Manila, Philippines while Aishwarya Rai later won Miss World in Sun City, South Africa. But did you know that the Miss India organizers favored Aishwarya Rai to win Miss Universe that time? Aishwarya was already a famous model before she joined Miss India, her beauty is comparable to a Hollywood superstar. When she joined Miss India, more than half of the other candidates backed out because they believed they have no chance against Aishwarya. Sushmita was a fresh face that time and she also feared losing to Aishwarya that she even told her mother not to attend the coronation night. On the finals night Aishwarya and Sushmita tied in the final round, the first time ever in Miss India history. The pageant rule stated that if ties did happen, everyone in the top 5 would be given another round of question and then the judges will select the winner. The judges gave Aishwarya an easy question (because they really wanted her to win), and they gave Sushmita a complicated question. However Sushmita is more eloquent and she easily answered the question and in the end she won Miss India with 9.41 pts (over Aishwarya with 9.39 pts). Aishwarya cannot accept the results and after the coronation she ran and cried a long time backstage. Even the Miss India organizers were disappointed because they believed they lost their chance of winning their first ever miss universe via Aishwarya. In an interview with Sushmita a few years ago, she said that one week before her departure to Miss Universe 1994, she realized her passport was missing. The Miss India organizers let another model (Anupama Verma) borrow Sushmita's passport for a show in Bangladesh. Then came the big shock. Organisers of Miss India suggested that the Miss India pageant’s runner-up, Aishwarya Rai be sent in her place instead to the Miss Universe pageant. Meanwhile, Sushmita could go for the Miss World pageant. Of course, the proposal made her very angry. The Miss India organizers declared they will send Aishwarya to Miss Universe '94 (because she has a valid passport that time), while Sushmita will process another passport and will be sent in Miss World' 94 later in November. “Because when you win something, rightfully so, you’re not requesting it. So we now have to come together and ensure that this gets done. It’s easy to say ‘Yea, well now we can’t find it. The passport is lost. Miss World is in November. You go later, we’ll figure out your passport till then.’” Sushmita fought over this and said she will not compete in any other beauty pageant other than Miss Universe. Her family asked help from the government (from the late union minister Rajesh Pilot), and gladly she obtained a new passport and competed in Miss Universe. And who would have expected that Sushmita would win the Miss Universe crown that year (despite being a black horse), earning the first Miss Universe win for India. The following day the Indian government declared it the "Philippines-India Friendship Day". Aishwarya Rai also won Miss World later that year, accordingly she won the hearts of the South African people the minute she stepped in Sun City. That's why beginning 1995 the Miss India organizers began to crown two national winners... Miss India-Universe and Miss India-World, both with equal status. India would win three more Miss Worlds that time winning in 1997, 1999 and a triple crown win in 2000. Sadly this lasted only until 2007 because since 2008 the main winner of Miss India is sent to Miss World and they now have a separate pageant for Miss Universe. CTTO

Aish looked over confident therefore she lost.All wanted Aisha warya to win as she was famous already used come in tv commercial ads like Philips etc she was already a known prior miss India.Sushmita won because of her personality and answer.Sushmita was not nervous at all she was herself like aishwarya.Only nervous people speak fast.Sushmita is very intelligent as beat already famous Aishwarya rai.Aishwsrya was 22 ,in 1994 & sushmita sent was just 18yrs but still beat aishwarya rai.Many India has won Miss World title but sushmita was first to win Miss Universe title in 1994. I like sushmita sent as lived her life as per her terms and not as per society's terms adopted kids for which one needs big heart.Sushmita extremely practical

She didn't say kiss me. There are organisers and photographers who prompt the winners in front of the stage, Aishwarya got that and kissed Sushmita, Sushmita beckoned Francesca what they were told to do. I have been in pageantry and this is done for photos .

It was to make Aish the winner. She was winning all the awards, she was getting all the attention, They never thought Sushmita would come on so strong that they would TIE in the scores. In retrospect, the scores should've been used to determined who entered into the next and final rounds and like at MU, the judges give each of the contestant a final ranking based on overall impression. I think Aish would've won if that was the case.

I would have loved to hear how Aish genuinely felt at the moment she realised she is not the winner despite being the obvious favorite and when she saw Sush being crowned. But no one ever asked her these difficult questions because she simply NEVER likes to acknowledge this historic defeat of hers at hands of Sush. All her interviews are scripted. Such was gracious enough to be humble about her win and openly acknowledge how she was scared bcz Aish was the competition and how gorgeous Aish is. But Aish in so many decades has never even uttered the name Sushmita a single time on any public platform. As if that will change the history.

Must have come as a huge shock for Aish, as she was THE FAVOURITE. There was no one even close to her beauty... As was perceived. She must have been extremely confident of walking away with the crown and title.

Just because she's an actress who has done some good movies how can you weigh her success in life. Life is much more than just having a successful career and married to a well known family. She has been awarded Padmasree, Film Fare Awards as the best actress, Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters , Innumerable IIFA Awards, Countless other accolades and achievements , TV Commercials Internationally can be meagre to few people. Didn'I come easily. I don't know how many of us can be thought of that position even in dreams. It's fine. No more arguments guys.

Although Sush answer was beautiful and appealing it wasn't the right answer. Textile heritage of India dates back to 100 or years ago. Even from mediviel times Indian silk, cotton, Indian dyes clothes with intricate beautiful printa were famous and exported globally.
