And used zero Japanese style sword techniques. Obviously the actor is trained in Chinese sword techniques, but it would have been nice to see some attempts at emulating the differences. I wrote this wall of text more for myself and because my ADD meds are kicking in, so settle down if you don't care, then don't read it. Even the first part where she is just doing what would be a series of underhaw windmills (if it was HEMA) isn't even a thing and is definitely not impressive in any way. You'd be expected to see a series of tight combinations involving back and forth foot work that would usually start with the sword in the scabbard and end with them removing the imaginary blood from the blade. The way the feet move, or more accurately how little you need to move them to change positioning is a big part of showing your ability in the Japanese styles, and she is basically tromping forward and just winging this blade around and then does a little aerial spin. Even in modern Japanese media that isn't trying to be realistic you don't see samurai act this way (unless they are Ronin or bad guys) because their whole vibe is supposed to be grounded, deliberate, and patient. There is the drawing sword cut (from the scabbard) that is something like these cuts, but it's more of a surprise attack strike, and is as often done as a horizontal cut across the abdomen as it is a rising cut designed to catch the face or throat, or the sword hand. And it's usually done at full arms length since it leaves you vulnerable. Using two hands on these kinds of cuts is fairly pointless anyway as you cannot generate much power with two hands on a rising cut without a longer handle, and katanas are hand and a half swords, that extra length being there for re-directing the blade more than adding force. The lack of pommel also does not help this as they add leverage and something to push against. A one handed Chinese long sword will do just fine at this because it's a very light, two edged, strait sword, so you can convert to draw or push cuts by stepping in or out, and you can divert the point back into the line to thrust and deflect better than a curved blade can. Plus you will have another free hand for a shield, scabbard, knife, cape, etc. The dao can do this because it's a massive hewing sword that has the weight to deliver a killing blow from most angles, and is either two handed or has a large pommel for this purpose so you can put your weight into it. So she's started out by demonstrating she doesn't even know how to use her sword, or act like a samurai.

@@Tidalforces Because is a soldier, isnt a ronin XD, the japanese soldiers was trained for western soldiers, they didn't really know much about fencing, they just taught them how to shoot. It's also fiction, for example have you ever seen at least one movie from ancient Rome that represents the legionnaires well? Not only are there no Italian or Latin actors, but not even the costumes are correct... And they don't speak Latin, that's cinema. There are at least a couple dozen films about ancient Rome, and all of them are poorly made from a martial, cultural, aesthetic and interpretative point of view, and as for the Japanese, not even they themselves represent Japanese warriors well, for example, the samurai in the movies are all young and handsome and their combat styles seem more like an anime than kenjutsu and iaido... Nothing further from reality. but that is normal, because it is only fiction and not a documentary.

то, что творили японцы во вторую мировую с китайским народом не только не может охарактеризовать их уважительно, а заставить плевать им в лицо. Они настолько по-скотски обращались с китайцами, как фашисты с евреями не обращались. Так что не знаю, о каком вы уважении... И да, наша немногочисленная группировка, летом 1945 года разбила квантунскую армию Японии, полумиллионную, меньше чем за месяц. В середине августа начали и 9го сентября закончили. И да, почитайте "Резня в Нанкине", а потом вспомните про уважение к японским воинам. Они были большими фашистами, чем итальянцы и немцы вместе взятые.

As a student of various Asian sword styles, the first thing I said was, "that's not even close to real Japanese swordsmanship." Besides, this is the IJA, the only females they kept around were sex slaves, they wouldn't have allowed a woman to be an officer.

Тут есть многое. Китай был ослаблен колониальными войнами, и потом - японцы продемонстрировали китайцам то же, что в свое время японцам продемонстрировали испанцы, а именно - тренированная армия бьет любое число каких угодно мастеров боевых искусств. Япония не сталкивалась впрямую с Испанией, а вот самураи с испанскими терциями - бывало.

Храбрые, благородные, мужественные китайцы в кино в реальности сдали втрое меньшей японской армии половину страны. Китай вообще сегодня есть на карте благодаря американской и советской армиям. Но в кино, конечно же китайский героизм зашкаливает.

Did Japan even have any women in its army during this period or any female samurai warriors? Did the Republic of China have any female king fu masters? (Remember the Communists were mostly hiding in the mountains at this time.)

Martial arts has to be the most inane genre of film that there is; it even beats our horror films, which only try to elicit a specific response in the viewer.

No, they can't actually sword fight. It's just camera work. No one shot lasts a full second. Close ups so you can't see the blade work.

Ерунда. В 1900-м году было наглядно показано, чего стоят все эти мастера кунг-фу. Как бы ни был крут в рукопашном бою, пуля европейского оружия и дисциплина всё равно круче.

Видно, что самурай это женщина! Но как это может быть? Самураи обычно только мужчины!

а кто сказал, что она - самурай? У японцев с испокон веков были куноичи/куноити - женщины-убийцы. Владели боевыми искусствами, холодным оружием и присущими только женщинам приёмами нападения. Да, статусно, женщин принижали в Японии, но они вполне могли драться и убивать. Единственное нарекание по поводу сцены - военная форма. Я не уверен, что женщины-офицеры были армии Японии на тот момент, не берусь утверждать.
