These cars are geared to reach top speed in a quarter mile as quickly as possible. The tracks also have to be longer than the race portion of it so there is room for braking and in some areas a 1 mile track might not be possible because of that. Not to mention the longer you have to sustain high speeds the higher the risk

They used to race over longer distances than the quarter, but people kept blowing engines at the three-eighths mark. A quarter is still good racing and it helps you to be able to get to the end of the show on the engine you came to the track with.
