    Daniel Roy Back then, they had more leniency with lethal force. They basically took away the fleeing felon rule in 1985, so now it's kind of a free-for-all for crooks. Back then, crooks complied or died.

    +Traverse Tebow Around '78 or '79 we had a couple of Beats where Helmets were mandatory. The first time my FTO told me; "You WILL wear your Helmet while on this beat", I thought he was kidding. Well, it didn't take me 5 minutes to realize why we wore helmets on that beat. Back then we didn't even have ballistic vests unless we bought our own and then you got the reputation of being "chicken". Times have changed a bit...

    Wow! Deja vu. First patrol car I was issued was a 1973 Plymouth Satellite with the 318ci V8 with 4bbl. Policing was a lot different when I was a rookie in California 36 years ago...

    This clip is Oxnard Police Department in California and that bank is no longer a bank and it has been converted into a museum. It’s crazy how much the livery on the cars and the uniforms changed so much from then and now.

    Oh this takes me back! I went through "Basic Law Enforcement Training" (as it was called in N.C.) in 1994 and we watched a similar, but updated, film. Then we would go out into the parking lot and take turns practicing Felony Stops. Good times!

    This is so cool! I started here in the 80’s and worked with some of these guys who were top notch vets when I started. The primary guy was a Mototorcyle Officer Frank Peramo. Probably was the most popular guy in our city. Followed by Jaime “trust me”Skeeters who was the lookout at the bank.

    @@bmo4k30 You're right, everyone made good points though. Fuel economy, aerodynamics, popularization of cab forward design. Remember the 80's when we had all these small, boxy turtle shaped v6 versions of classic cars like the 1980 Mustang? Ford Fairlane, Ford Escort, Chevy Celebrity, Chevy Turdbox, etc. Even the '78 Roadrunner was like the wimpy younger brother of the real 70's muscle cars, lol.

    I'm surprised to see Oxnard carrying Colt 1911 semiautomatic pistols in 1973. I started with another California department in 1978 and we were carrying .357 revolvers. We didn't switch to semi autos until about 1985. This was typical for all the surrounding agencies as well.

No, unfortunately I never got to try out for BUDS. I was in the Navy, but my MOS or Rating as the Navy calls them locked me in for my enlistment contract. When it came time to re-enlist, I decided to leave the Navy to pursue a career in Law enforcement. Biggest mistake of my life, in my opinion.

    '74 Monaco is still my favorite. 440 cubic inch plant, cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks.... model made before the catalytic converter so it'll run good on regular gas.

    When I was a rookie , we were short units on grave yard. The Sgt. Assigned me the day shift patrol Lt,s. marked unit. It was a Dodge Polara with a 440. Best rookie shift of my life. Like they used to say, hit the gas and it would suck the pigeons off the sidewalk!

    No doubt! I'm a big Mopar fan and have had lots of them, trucks as much as cars. Cool crew cab 2wdwith the topper on it at the beginning of the video. I had a '66 ex-Air Force crew cab Power Wagon. You want to take attention away from the guy with the $100,000 '57 Chevy at a show? Pull up and park next to him. I did just that.

    @jason9022 Technically, you're right. We "mopar" guys refer to anything made by Chrysler Corp. as Mopars. I may be mistaken, but, it seems as if you aren't a Mopar guy, otherwise, you wouldn't be disputing it.

    Actually he was a stud. That’s why they used him. I was fortunate to work with some of these dudes as a rookie when I came on in the 80’s probably the busiest small city in the country at the time. But has the largest gang member affiliation in the country. 60 min did a documentary on it.

    I do like the angle the first officer used with the front of the vehicle. Perfect diamond between him and potential projectiles. It also helps that the freaking engine blocks were steel plus at least 6 cylinders and above.

    Awesome video, so many memories of old Oxnard. Just more traffic now. I remember those Police cars and when A street was a closed mall. The tactics have changed little. I wonder if the Officer was Frank Paramo? Any guesses out there as to who the Officer was?

    Oxnard was definitely progressive as the first officer is carrying a semi auto 9 mm vs the .38 magnums most other agencies were carrying. The .9 mm Browning high power in the video holds13 rounds and provides super fast reloading.

    Jeff Cooper didn't invent the idea of keeping your finger off the trigger until the late 1970's. In fact, you'll even find training films from this period teaching you to keep your finger on the trigger, or even pull the trigger to make sure the safety is working!

    That was my High School car I bought in 1983 from a little old lady. 49,000 miles on it. 600 bucks in PERFECT condition. I got ALOT of tail in that ride
