Felling Last Trees for Log Cabin FINALLY! | 10 | - One Man Traditional Log Cabin series
Ойын-сауық
Episode 10 on the traditional log cabin series!
I just graduated from high school and want a big challenge in life. I decided that I alone with only hand tools and raw power was going to build my own traditional off grid log cabin by hand in the Swedish forest.
In this episode I am felling/cutting down the last trees for the log cabin
Ep 11 I will be dragging out these final trees to the log cabin by hand.

I am now a bit over 71, i live in the extreme north east corner of Minnesota, a state where a lot of Swedes emigrated to, including some of my great grand parents. I have always loved to plant trees, and, there is nothing quite as rewarding as seeing the tiny saplings you planted thirty years ago, grow into tall trees. Some die, and, do not make it, but, the ones that do are one of lifes rewards. I now can stand in the shade of white pines that i planted, i can stand there and listen to the whisper of the wind though their fine boughs. I am a builder, and, i will leave some buildings, some furniture and cabinetry behind be when i go, but those trees that i nurtured in our rocky thin soil will be my true legacy.
Love the axe you've got so accurate
You remind this old man that the young really are the hope for the future.

SOME of the young - - THIS one, especially
I am in awe of how precise your axe always hits exactly where you aim. Even in my younger days, I always felt sorry for the timber I was 'hacking' at. Eventually I got the job done but was rather ashamed at how much my work resembled that of a demented beaver!
It is a pleasure to watch you work! It appears that you are totally at peace, totally focused on the work at hand, totally in the moment, not wanting to be anywhere else! You seem to be able to extract the exact amount of energy to do each task! Not over or under working! Like a marathon runner instead of a sprinter! So effective, taking time to sharpen the saw! Amazing
Wow. Amazing. If you can be so disciplined at your young age to take on such a huge task there is no limit to what you can achieve as you mature. Congratulations 🙂

Erik! I really look forward to your videos, glad the weather is warming up so we can see more. I am in Maine, USA we are getting warm days and as soon as you take off the coat Mother Nature throws a little snow at you. She is in charge! 😀 looks like your weather also. I am retired but with the virus everything is shut down here. I am happy to have your videos to look forward to. You have a great group of followers. Stay healthy and safe. I will be watching! 👍👍
You've come so far its literally insane. I'm so glad I watched this video though because you have really inspired me to become better with handtools and to create but I was getting so discouraged by my slow progress. Thank you for showing the effort you have to put in for every tree, it really does make a difference. So proud of you!
Of all the bad that has come from Covid, this young man inspires me to be hopeful about the future! Thank you axe wielding young buck!

I would like to suggest that when you're doing the felling cut with your saw, you get down on one knee. It will relieve a strain on your back that you may not notice now, but in twenty or thirty years you'll know about it ;)

When I was contemplating living Off Grid... (Off Grid as in a min. of 100 mile from any city ) The first thing, was to set up the GARDEN.... I see you have planted something before you even began to build.... TOUCHE.... To dig up a surface garden takes less than 45 min. with a FORK ( Pichfork ) drop in the seeds and or seedlings, and cover with hay... Building with HANDTOOL -- Its takes a minimum of 3 WEEKS to build a decent sized. Foundation... unless you have Dedicated Time ! By the time you complete the frame, you veggies ( some fruit ) will be ready!! Thank you for Using Common Sense.. Smoochies!
Hello Erik, wouldn’t a wedge make sawing a bit easier? Beautiful logs, amazing log work!
@ErikGrankvist

Good question. The trees are not that big so a wedge can fit without being in the way of the big saw. Otherwise it would help. But still I fell these trees very fast.

This much more common then you think. Have you replaced what you have used?
very practical lesson for one and all - if you taketh away, you must put something back, i wonder how many trees to make this cabin? looking good
I think that this men is very good playing minecraft🙂
Thanks for sharing. You are living in many guys' dream. I learnt a lot from your video. One question about the log preparing: are the logs ready to use? Don't you need to dry them for, maybe one year before using?
@ErikGrankvist
4 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of different ideas around how long a log should dry. I believe that you can let them dry how long you want, just that you have to be aware of it when you are building. Letting them dry now for a month+ in this dry weather and then build windows and such so that the timber doesn't crush them when drying is important. If drying logs for a year the shrinking is not as much. However it is much harder to cut with the axes in such dried logs. Thank you for you question. 👍
@MidnightAmratha
4 жыл бұрын
It all boils down to moisture content, floor timber needs to be around15% or so, or the planks will push out the walls if they get wet, on the other hand if you use them when they are around 22-24% you will get gaps around 1 centimeter ( 3/8) inch, not ideal for flooring i guess. The logs themselves will check when drying because the center is already drier than the outer layer therefore shrinking less, also the length will reduce when drying though only 1-2% versus the circumference which will shrink around 5-7%. Overall "green" logs are going to "work" when placed but taking that into consideration means you can use fresh lumber for building, only timber you want to keep a very tight tolerance ( like furniture wood) needs to be dried out down to around 9% ( the overall moisture humans find to be "dry".)
plantation boy.thank you .
Well done! How many trees /logs did you roughly need in total for the entirety of the cabin?
Another great video from the nerdy woodsman - 😉 Seriously, do you mind telling me where (what type of business) you get your sappling's from and how much they cost each? I am curious. 4:12 - There is something so soothing to me about the sound of a falling tree - I don't know why that is. Thanks for another great video.
Did you purposefully allow all the logs to dry out for a season(s) or is it unnecessary and just a byproduct of the length of the project?
oh nice watching this i remember i need to put some seedlings in other pots now...
Hej Erik! Roliga videos att följa! Var hittade du din svarta keps du har på dig?
Nice job. I like the editing. If you've ever watched primitive technology what they do is provide context/commentary in the subtitles so you can turn it on or off if you want it or not. I know the stuff in this video is self-explanatory but it's an option if you do something a bit more complex.

hei erik, when do you choose to fell a try with your timmersvan saw and when with the big axe? and can you tell why people did it the one or the other way in the past? is it just a matter of the evolution of tools where the saw is the more modern way or are there pro's and cons to both ways... as i have both options now i was thinking about this quite a lot lately.. hope you can tell me and good luck with your cabin!:)

Why do you chose spruce instead of pine, is it because you have less pine in your area?

Are you allowed to just build a cabin wherever you want in your country? I have to look into it, but I don't think it works that way in Canada...
@henriklarsson5221
4 жыл бұрын
It´s a very confusing area, with a lot of rules. But no, you can´t just build anywhere. You need a permit, that costs money. If you already own the land and have existing living-housing there. You can build small lodges under ~25 m2 with a small permit, that they always lets trough you just have to report it, as long as it´s not in an area with neighbors very close, then it needs to be build like some meters away from the property lines. This would probably be the case for Eric. In Canada there is some special places, where there is no powerlines, or bigger community, or any guaranteed road services etc that you can build without building-codes or the IRS harassing you. Like "My self Reliance" has done, check him out.

True! In Canada, if you live in or have property in an unorganized township, you do not need to follow normal building codes nor need a structural permit to build. Being that there is no structural code for a log structure, to build one in an organized township, it would have to be a 10 x10 or smaller to not need a permit... anything bigger, you'd need a permit
