Oh, if just Mendelssohn would have lived a few years longer, he left us far too early; due to his premature death at the age of 38, ’Christus’ remains as an unfinished torso, featuring truly beautiful musical passages. The modern research suggests the cause of death was an aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage, most likely a hereditary disorder (impaired brain vessels) as both of his parents, grandfather Moses and sister Fanny had died from the same kind of strokes (source: The Lancet). If ‘Christus’ could have been completed, the work would have become without a doubt equally significant and impressive as the finished oratorios ‘Paulus’ and ‘Elias’.
