Mary was 37 when she came to the throne. She had been betrothed on and off including to Francis I of France and Emperor Charles V during Henry VIII's reign, but Henry kept calling it off. Her father treated her very badly for not accepting the divorce from her mother Catherine of Aragon and clinging to the old religion. Her life was in danger under Henry and her brother Edward VI. Then Lady Jane Grey's usurpation in 1553. I think all of this stress took a toll on her physically and mentally. It's true she was not pretty when she married Philip (unlike the actress in this movie), but the Venetian ambassador said that in her youth she was.

It's sad her father neglected her, she could've gotten married so much earlier and had a nicer life

Plus she did have a chance to marry Duke Philip of Bavaria who happened to be a Lutheran and would have been a successful marriage but there were those from the Catholic party at the Tudor Court threw a wrench in the negotiations and the rest they say is history

I think she "fell in love" with Phillip because he was Spanish and Catholic just like her mother. Poor woman couldn't say her goodbyes to her mother earlier. And she also liked that he was young, serious and intelligent. I don't think she was enchanted by the way he looked and I don't think she wanted to know him better and loved him for what he was. It was just the consequence of her trauma, of her simple dreams, weight of responsibility, and maybe spite.

At one time Mary was very beautiful. Sadly her father caused her to wait too long. Interestingly Philip was one of two potential suitors. The one proposed by Parliament was a man who had been locked up in the tower of London and believed to be a tad crazy by that point.

The other suitor was Edward Courtney, Marquis of Exector, one of the last of the Plantagenets but she felt he was too young for her. Then he and Elizabeth kind of hit it off, to the point that there was of marriage between them and Reginald Pole suggested that Mary could be a virgin queen, and declare Elizabeth as her heir. But the Spanish Ambassador with the help of Charles V nixed the idea.

Ironías de la vida, María I de Inglaterra amo a Felipe con todo su corazón, mientras que su hermana Isabel I de Inglaterra lo odio a tal punto que se volvieron enemigos algo así como Batman y Joker a mi parecer, 🤔 o eso es lo que me deja claro todo lo que leí y Vi de ellos. 😅 De alguna manera Felipe termino relacionado con ambas reinas

The TV show is Carlos Rey Emperador (Charles King Emperor). There is a subplot set in England which shows the fall from grace of Catherine of Aragon (I'm uploading the scenes of that storyline) and later on the marriage of Mary Tudor and Philip. The series should be available in the international web of RTVE, but I don't know for sure.

El sufrimiento de Carlos ll "el hechizado" que padeció un montón de enfermedades y era estéril, la cantidad de hijos que perdieron Luis XIV y María Teresa de Austria porque ambos eran primos hermanos por partida doble, otros que nacían con deformidades y problemas psiquiátricos. El único hijo varón de Felipe ll era un loco perdido pobre, tuvieron que encerrarlo, Felipe y María de Braganza, su esposa, eran primos hermanos.

@@GoldLove21 I think part of the issue, especially back then, was how likely was a woman to have children at an advanced age? Getting pregnant, carrying a child to term, and giving birth where both of you lived was chancy at best. Look at how few healthy children lived in the Tudor Dynasty, and they had the best medical treatment possible at the time. Elizabeth of York had at least seven pregnancies, with four children living to infancy. Katherine of Aragon at least 6-8 pregnancies and only one living child, Anne Boleyn 3-4 pregnancies, one living child, Jane Seymour, one pregnancy, one child but she died, Henry’s other three wives had no children with him, but Catherine Parr had one pregnancy, she died and it’s believed the child died soon after. Mary I only had phantom pregnancies and Elizabeth remained a virgin. Mary I was considered old at the time of her marriage because she was cutting it close if she was likely to bear any children. This actress is far too pretty to play Mary who was ‘handsome’ at this point at best.

Por qué ponen a una actriz tan bonita cuando en la realidad no lo era? Por eso él no la amaba era jóvenes y apuesto cosa que María no,tenía dientes destruidos porque le gustaban los dulces,padecía elefantitis.A él le era repulsiva.Lean historia de verdad.

Leí en una biografía sobre María Tudor que los británicos pensaban que Felipe de España iba a degradar a la corte británica. Son muy arrogantes y se sienten superiores a todos, por lo que pensaron que Felipe y su séquito tendrían gallinas corriendo por la corte y la harían de clase baja y vulgar.
