Feline Coronavirus and FIP: What’s New? - conference recording

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Veterinarians and researchers have been working on the mystery of FIP for 60 years. However, new technologies are accelerating our acquisition of knowledge and potential treatments. This lecture by Dr. Elizabeth Berliner focuses on updates and where we go from here in diagnosing and managing this disease. This presentation was recorded at the 2018 ASPCA-Maddie’s Cornell Shelter Medicine Conference.

I'll simplify this for everyone: 1) Coronavirus is common in cats. 2) Coronavirus is not a major problem disease for cats in itself - it is NOT FIP! 3). FIP is a mutation to the Coronavirus that is cat specific and limited primarily to that cat - FIP ITSELF IS NOT CONTAGIOUS! 4) FIP has two types: Wet (very short lifespan for cat), and DRY (somewhat longer lifespan of many months to a couple + years). 5) There is an unauthorized/unsanctioned treatment for FIP that is a very expensive drug that is actually used for a dog disease. 6) FIP has two testing methods available: a quick vet office test that has a high false positive rate (usually vets will try to corraborate test results with symptoms; second type test is a more expensive (send blood sample away to lab test with 2 weeks wait). 7) Get a second Vet opinion (or pay for the more expensive test) if your cat has very few corraborating symptoms. I've sadly found a significant percentage of vets are lazy and once they see a few FIP symptoms with a quick test - they default to "euthanize" and they stop thinking!

Are you sure about point 5)? The treatment available for FIP is GS medicine, it's something like remdesevir and it doesn't have license for veterinary use. I haven't heard it's used in dogs. Btw fuck Gilead Sciences.

Thank you for this informative video. We recently adopted a kitten with clinical signs of dry FIP. The IDEXX PCR showed negative, and we went one step further to do the uveitis panel which also came back negative. Now trying a 4th gen fluoroquinolone for potential mycoplasma, and no improvement despite supportive care, probiotics, B12 injections, antibiotics, steroidal eyedrops for uveitis, etc. As a last resort, fecal proved clear, but will treat for potential parasites including coccidia. CBC/blood show some elevated phosphorus, mild anemia, and creat/BUN was a little off. Ultrasound clear. I highly suspect dry of the neuro/ocular form, but the diagnosis is impossible. This has been reviewed by 2 vets and a board certified opthomologist. I'm planning to discuss this video with all parties.

Hi! A very interesting talk. I am interested in your opinion: Do you think, we v can learn from feline corona concerning immunity and vaccination? After 40 years of research there still is no working vaccine, but for the recent Covid19 they expect to come up with one any time. And as I understand there is no immunity that cats develop to Fcov after having gone through an infection, not to speak of herd immunity in a population of cats.

This may seem like an odd question, but I ask for good reason before I contact you and waste your time, I'm delighted to see studies been done on shelter environments as most animals are treated by vets as if they come from a home environment and not multi-animal environments, had many a chat with vets on this. I've been in rescue for 30yrs, to date I'd say I've been highly lucky! But FIP/panleukopaenia are highly on the rise and many shelters in Ireland are being wiped out mainly by the panleukopaenia, but experiencing higher than normal outbreaks of coronavirus/FIP, I keep my eye to things as much as I can, I've had an idea it was coming from purebreeds many years back, most calls I receive about FIP are from people who buy purebreds, kittens mostly pass before three mths old, but as Ireland becomes more diverse in population, so to is the purebred population which I believe is leading to the rise in FIP. Ireland also has an 80% plus intake of kittens and cats to shelters with cat flu, it's epidemic here, which is a worry as coronavirus maybe getting overlooked because of it. My question is, as coronavirus and FIP appear, from what I have learned to be related directly to RNA/DNA, would correcting/repairing the DNA have an effect on treating this virus? Would love to have a chat with you about it. Best regards.

I just lost my Travieso, my 10 month old kitten this morning to FIP, and his brother Gordo 3 months ago. I rescue, foster and I'm a volunteer trapper for my local city's TNR Group. I was never made aware of the possibility of exposing this deadly disease to my own cats until my Gordo passed and I was told he had FIP!!! Now I'm very concerned for my other cats and I really don't know what to do to mitigate this issue I brought home to my fur babies!?!? My Vet informed me that all of my cats have been exposed and that I should keep an eye out for any of the symptoms mentioned in this video. I would greatly appreciate any advice and or suggestions on what to do now that exposure has happened🐾🙏🐾

I adopted a kitty that needed rehoming. I'm relatively new to rescue. I had some kittens who were sick at home already ... I'm pretty sure she got the corona virus from them. I thought if I kept up with their vaccinations they would be okay ... I was able to get GS-144524, but her symptoms had progressed so far, it didn't arrive in time. I think it had already done permanent damage to her eyesight and severity of disease increases chance of relapse. We don't even know if cats can live beyond 2 or 3 years after a successful treatment. I wanted a full life for her ...

I realize you must be a very busy person, but im hoping you can maybe and please take a few minutes to help me. we got 2 free female kittens from CL. fast forward 4 years, we lost one of them, her name was Munchie, to what my vet believes was FIP. The emergency vet also wondered about FIP when we brought her in to have her liver ultrasound. my vet wanted to see if it was an issue with her gallbladder so we were referred to the emergency vet. So long story short, all signs pointed towards FIP. How worried should we be about sister? the emergency vet said we dont have to worry, our family vet said we need to keep our eyes on her. our daughter is so heartbroken, the kitty we lost was HER cat :( i wanted to get her a kitty for Christmas but my vet said we should wait at LEAST 6 months. can you please offer your opinion on this? As our current cat is a blood sibling, it seems she would be at a higher risk. So does this mean we can never open our home to a 2nd cat? I am lost without our kitty, our daughter is too. please i beg you, can you offer some kind of insight as to the risk to my other cat and HONEST opinion on when to (if ever) get a new kitty. I had never heard of this... until it stole the life of our 4 year old baby on 12/02/19 (PS we are just a family home, we dont work at a shelter or vets office or breed and we dont let them outside)

@@high_fructose_corn_syrup Hello again - here is what our veterinarians say: From my understanding, a majority of cats have been exposed to and are positive to feline coronavirus (I’ve heard up to 60%). This is the virus that mutates in an individual cat to FIP. Not every feline coronavirus-positive cat mutates to FIP. The actual FIP virus is not contagious as FIP, but rather as feline coronavirus. So, cats exposed to FIP positive cats do not automatically get sick with FIP. They may become carriers of feline coronavirus and expose new cats to feline coronavirus, but just because a cat has feline coronavirus does not automatically mean the virus will mutate to FIP in them - that is an individual cat mutation. There may be some “hot” strains of feline coronavirus, but that is super hard to predict. If you had your two cats for several years, then one just died, I’m not sure waiting 6 months will do much to protect a new cat from exposure to feline coronavirus (which may or may not mutate to FIP). I’m not sure I’d worry too much about waiting because there is always a small risk with any cat anyway and waiting probably is not going to give you the security you are looking for. and from our other vet: I wouldn't worry about getting a new cat. Your FIP cat was exposed a long time ago and factors such as crowding, stress and genetics play a role in whether corona virus mutates in a cat to FIP. So, new cat, not at risk. Your other cat, if she is a sibling raised in the exact same conditions, does have a higher risk than other cats but she couldn’t pass it on to a new cat in the household. I hope this helps. Let us know and we'd love to know if you get a new kitty. We very much hope that if you do, you will adopt one from a rescue or shelter. Good luck!
