Absolutely brilliant bit of kit. With all the improvements and advantages it will make to you in preparing stock, you must notice some difference with the reduction in noise. Even watching there is hardly any noise. Such a quiet machine. It will serve you well I'm sure.

Never seen a planer pull through so quickly with good results before. Amazing machine.

The blade covers behind the fence and over the table are *so* much better than the Hammer. I love that they fold so they don't take up a stupid amount of room.

Just seeing this video for the first time, nice machine. One thing you good do to check the flatness or the edge of the wood would be to run a line of crayon from end to end this would make it easier to see how much of planning needs to be done.

That is an amazing combo tool. Sure cuts nice too. Is the blade sharpening a concern and the following setting of the cutters easy too?

Its so useful! I use it for everything I need a second one now :(

To save having to avoid the blade guard protruding out, suggest you fold say one section down and then bring the fence across to match the width you need. I have the AD741 and the folding blade guard works well if you adjust the fence. I must admit I'm a little jealous but I don't have much timber wider than 16" (except slabs) so it's all good (the slabs are too wide again for even a 20" fence). Cheers and enjoy your new toy.

Love it. I have received my quote from Felder. Same unit but with Digi drive and only because that's what they have in the showroom. Its your fault. But really I have been limited with my A3 31 for long enough I think. Cheers.

I expected I would not see any torn material, while on the first sample was a lot of them. For this class of machine and the spiral shaft strongly advertised by Felder, the effects are so-so. I have seen with my own eyes how the Martin T45 and T54 planers works, also with spiral shafts. They made an indisputable mirror on every material, including the poplar nasty for processing. When I looked against the light at the processed surfaces I could see reflections of a perfectly flat surface. If I have ever NOT seen the need to use tools such as an angle gauge or a ruler, then this was the moment.

If you will set the cut height and take a slow pass and then reset for .001" deeper cut you will burnish the wood and OMG look how smooth it looks and feels now or sometimes just do a same height second pass and watch the wood glow, amazing.

Nice video! I laughed when you mentioned the button. Having the A3-31 to wind it down to lower the bed is a task sometimes when your switching back and forth multiple times. But I feel you are right. There should be a HOME button that clears the bed so that you can flip the shroud over on the switch to jointer mode. Hopefully they come to that soon.

if you get the digi-drive option you can set a memory position for that

Just an idea when you have a long piece that isn't flat you could just plane the one end first then flip it around and do the other end to get it close to flat then run the whole piece through the jointer this will save you some time plus not having to lift the heavy piece all the time. USA viewer.

Kind of , it what ever happens there will be a max thickness , so if you plan one end first the calibrate that end will define the total thickness

Regarding the criticism of the Felder/Hammer fences, what people don't seem to get is the flex makes no difference in that direction, it's still at 90, it flexes evenly.

Lol... I work in mm for length and thickness , but still inch with the width not sure what haha

I know a lot of people don't like the pork chop style cutter guards on your typical American style machine but I would have to think that style would provide more coverage that this Euro style. At least in the operations shown on this video.

Mate, if you keep banging that digital height button with those staccato taps you will be calling Felder for a new switch. Ease up on that and just touch it. Have fun with that machine! good luck

Put some colored lights on it and turn off the overhead lights and that's where your push button skill will shine. What big city are you close to with that accent? I'm in Chicago. good luck

Yes , very quiet even pushing wood over if very quiet and what you can really see is there is very little resistance while removing even 4mm .. of very hard wood. :) happy days

I needed max width for a combo machine couldn’t really find anything else as good . The finish on this is so good I didn’t even bother looking into format . I guess that will offer a bit more but I am very happy and I did also catch a very good end of year deal on my ad951 :)

it comes with a spiral head cutter, thats why its quiet.

Am I correct in assuming that the carbide cutters can be turned 90 degrees when they become dull, to give a fresh cutting surface? If so then you have 4 cutting surfaces per cutter before they need sharpening or replacing?

Yes. You have 4 cutting edges to work with. They are numbered so you can turn them to the next number to keep track of them.

not sure how long a full change over will take me maybe an hour or more , but I had been told I will only change these around 1 a year! and that someone panner endgrain chopping board event day. the other great thing in not more having to set the height of the blades after changing them with was very slow and a pain to do ..

Been a couple years - would you still recommend this machine? I have a Hammer A3 31 right now, and it flexes way more than I expected when processing heavy lumber, especially while planing. Looking at an upgrade to a 20” JP, and narrowed it down to the AD951 from Felder, or the Minimax FS52/SCM Nova FS520 (same machine, different markets). How do the tables on the Felder handle heavy lumber? (Typical 8-12/4, 8-10’ stock for big tables) My SCM rep thinks the castings are thicker on their product, but of course he’ll say that. Do you ever run a feeder? Any issues that required a service tech? Thanks!

I don’t know the other machine . I am very happy with the AD951. Rise fall motor needed changing but I did that £200. No other problems and Felder talked me over the motor swap out very helpful!!

What do you think about the machine after 4years. Are the tables still holding their settings? Any problems with the electrical. Have you faced any wide dense lumber with the insert head. Was it hard to feed by hands.

It's a beautiful machine. Incredible performance. About the only thing I'm not crazy about is how far you're stood off from the tables while jointing. It hurt my back just watching Some of the passes you made where you're bent over around 90 degrees and having to work your way around the guard, although to get the results you're getting from it I would probably figure out a way to adapt to it.

Manor Wood I figured that but when you’re doing wide boards, up to twenty inches, you don’t have that option, you have to use the whole width of the table and it looks like it would be incredibly awkward considering how contorted you are on the narrower ones. I’m not putting it down because I don’t know how they could build one that corrected the situation and the results it gets are incredible but the thought of jointing dozens or hundreds of board feet on boards up to 20” that far from the tables sounds painful.

Manor man, you just got my subscription, and congrats on that piece of equipment! Man, that cutter head seems to be only whispering! In your video production, did you do any attenuating or compressing of the volume? Another question: do you have a technique for getting a spring joint on an edge? I am accustomed to using large, old jointers that often have a provision for tilting a table, and I use such features often. The Felder jointer/planer (USA parlance) that I have used, which was part of a 5 function combo, would not give me the joint I wanted on a 7’ table top glue-up, no matter how I monkeyed with the outfeed table height, nor with any of my other tricks.

Cheers amen and Welcome .! :) .. I have to say I haven't touch the outfield since Felder set the thing up and for me all jointing have been simple and work perfectly for me needs . . it a very VERY quiet machine I don't need to adjust volume for the thing running without wood going over it !

Can you get the double outfeed rubber rollers with this model for the planer?

I don't think so , they have a thickener that has that and maybe the Format ..but not sure.

Hi, very nice bit of kit! A tip regarding jointing: it is best to do the thicknessing first and then plane the to-be-joined edges using the inside/outside method, that will cancel out even the slightest deviation of the fence (to square that is). It goes like this: mark the top of the boards. Now plane the side of board one with the top side facing out, next plane edge of the board two that will glue to that that with the top side facing in. And so one for alle sides of all boards. Makes for very tight seams. For live edges it will work with two boards max, of course…

With a Martin jointer I mill a flat wide side first in one pass and then take it through with that side just milled against the fence to gain a true edge; and, I'm done jointing. What kind of jointer would need more passes; please explain

Basically this method works like the one used by craftsmen when joining boards by hand before glue up of a tabletop: clamp two boards together (back to back) and plane together. Any deviations on one boards' side are mirrored on the other, resulting in a perfect fit. This principle also applies to jointing on a machine - if eg the fence is off by a degree or so, that is corrected by mirroring as described. Hope this explains it.

Thanks for the lead, Bert. Krenov's one book I bought years ago was part of the inspiration in getting into wood after those decades in printing. Similarity in wood and paper-board print and finishing and coatings. I am spoilt because I skipped the steps between the 8-1/4" Bosch circular saw with a custom Meyer 60T with a hickory guide board in the late 70's with no jointer-planer (did visit Interbimal-Milano and Kolle factory-Esslingen) to my present day Martin and Felder CNC stuff. The Martins come within .001" of true with Leuco and Tersa so I was not aware of the significance of Mr. Bates and Doucette Wolfe. Now, I understand the what and why of the extra steps using those machines. The more we know about in this world the better. Thanks If we have a small format printing press with 12 ink rollers and want to print quality we will never match the larger German brand press with digital controls for inking with 23 rollers and more adjustments than a BMW; just never happen. In my old age I do not have the time to go to a Bennett School and start from the ground. I did graduate from RIT and saw their School of American Craftsman but that was 50 years ago and Vietnam was calling-damn draft board. good luck

Looks like they dropped the ball in designing the blade guard. You're constantly Overstretching because it's in the way. It looks uncomfortable. A spring-loaded swing style would work better.

this is european style blade guard. they prefer to be uncomfortable. i believe it does have an option for the american style blade guard

I've used both. Fact is that an American "pork chop" style spring-loaded guard sticks out into your gut just as much or more when you plane wide faces. The fold-down Euro guard on this Felder is a big improvement over the original non-folding Euros. They were really in the way.

Can I just provide one note of safety. I know it is difficult what you are doing but when pushing that large bit through you are using your body weight. If that was to slip or jam for a moment and you weight pushed on through you could end up on top of the machine. Anything could then happen such as you hand ending up under the guard or hitting your head on the machine.

@@ManorWood Go back and watch the video at 15:20 and you will see that you are pushing the wood with your weight. I can see that you are balancing with your left hand as well against the machine which would help. I know it is difficult at times because that is one big heavy bit of wood and it requires effort. With that effort you could end up on top of the machine with your pushing hand. I would say if it was a lesser machine than the felder it would be far more dangerous. I had a close call myself once many years ago and end up on top of the machine with my hand very close to the blade.

Lol , nothing like a Lamborghini. I use it very day and it’s max 500mm is still a limiting factor for me . Not sure if there is a VW golf option with the same processing power and finish that’s also as good for basic A to B usage :)

I am making a bed at the moment the panels are 410 wide only reason I bought this was to work on 500 wide slab :)
