These videos are so important for tips and to disperse stigmas surrounding eating challenges for persons with sensory issues or who are autistic. Valuable information here, especially as we are about to travel out of the country this summer. I say “persons”because I feel there is a misconception that food challenges are a childhood struggle that resolves by adulthood. Not the case! My daughter’s ARFID did not just resolve itself with childhood (she’s now 20). I tune in to videos through the STAR Institute like these as a resource because there’s so little attention given to selective eaters that are young adults or older. Also, so often we hear the term “picky eater”aimed at persons challenged by sensory processing or autistic. Personally, I cringe when people refer to my daughter as a picky eater. First of all, each and every meal is a complex process, there’s so much more going on internally for my daughter. And the term to me is negative because it infers a willful component, and again it’s so much more than that.

Hi, Lori - thank you for tuning in and thank you for your feedback! It is appreciated. I think you're exactly right about how complex eating is and also about challenges across the lifespan! If you wrestle with feeding challenges from a young age that persist into the the teens/adulthood, it can add layers to the complexity....social expectations, memories of hard experiences, the overwhelm of eating in public places, how we view our own eating patterns, etc. etc. This video was specifically geared towards parents with children younger than your daughter, but we do also work with teenagers and adults in our feeding program. Thank you for your perspective on the term "picky eater," as well - here at STAR we know that food range is impacted by how our bodies respond to foods.
