It's sad from a human perspective, but just the way it goes in the avian world. The biggest and strongest take priority as they'd rather have two survive than all four perish. There's a fair chance the youngest will end up being fed to the older ones before all is said and done. But, if food is plentiful, then the youngest will be fed.

It is part of natural selection. Strong chicks will survive and become a strong bird, others not so much. But it depends of certain species, some of the birds parents feed all of the chicks with same amoount of food. It is a matter of environment in which birds live and about strategy the need to use.

watch more nests. you'd be surprised at how often they feed their young. not all of them get food in the same feeding session, but often they all get fed.

I saw the same thing. And the one chick in the front kept stealing the food the few times that the mother did try to give them some. It was kinda making me angry. Those poor little guys. Did the smaller ones survive?
