Feeding my Curly-tailed Lizards

These are my six juvenile Northern Curly-tails, currently living in a 20 gallon aquarium with UV and heat bulbs. I collected all of them from Key Largo in southern Florida last year, where they are an invasive species. They were once cheap and common pets, but have apparently been forgotten by most reptile keepers. I would never suggest keeping wild caught reptiles, but in this circumstance I personally collected these in a humane way and safely shipped them home. When they grow up, they will need a larger enclosure (I will definitely film the moving process). I will showcase clips of all my reptilian and arthropod companions over the next few weeks.

I grew up in South Florida and never seen them before then all of a sudden they are everywhere. They seem very intuitive. I see how they observe me. I finally caught one today. Just to show my son how cool they are. I will be releasing it only because I don't have the time to care for it, but I see no issue with someone that takes the time to keep them and give them what they need. Every creature that God created, aside from Angels and Humans, don't understand freedom as we do. They just react. Yet still, are we not all in an "enclosure"? I'm just grateful that God keeps me and gives me what I need, and allows me to have such amazing encounters with all of His creation.

Yeah, I go down to the Stuart, Hobe Sound area of southeast Florida, and prior to last year I'd never seen a curly tailed lizard in our development. Normally we only see brown and green anoles. But last year I started seeing a few curly tails there. I went down last month, and now for the first time, I saw a red headed agama lizard on the main drive leading through our development. I was seeing them all over the place in parks the last 2 years.

I caught them a year or two before this video, under some rocks at a friend's house on Key Largo. They're pretty cool pets, very food-motivated but quite skittish even now. Unfortunately, although I've learned a lot more about reptile care over the years, not all have survived the recent moves and transitions but the four remaining are all healthy adults. Wild-caught individuals will need to be treated for parasites like external mites, but if you're dedicated enough it's definitely worth it.

In their current setup, mine have a bright daylight LED and a UVB-emitting basking bulb (made for reptiles) on one side of their enclosure. Make sure the light fixture can handle that sort of light bulb and that it isn’t near anything flammable. Also make sure they get a balanced diet of different types of bugs (although not poisonous ones or ones from outdoors that may have pesticides or parasites) plus blueberry chunks and other safe types of fruits. I hope that you enjoy keeping them and that they thrive in your care!

What foods besides other living creatures can I use to safely catch & release them with? They use to enjoy fresh Cilantro & parsley, but I think they've become smarter..... I don't hate these invasive lizards, I just don't want my doggies to eat their dooky anymore!!! PLEASE HELP ME! I Don't wanna kill them. I have humane box catchers that I check daily. I then let them loose on my way to work (10 miles away). I just need to know if there's anything else I can place inside their no-kill boxes that I can use to catch and release.

This… is a bit tricky. The curly tailed lizards need to be removed from the porch, but killing them isn’t an option. If you release them somewhere else, they’re still an invasive problem for someone or something. The best solution might be to catch and keep them as pets (or, if that’s not possible, give them to someone else who can keep them as pets). As for baiting the traps, I’ve noticed my curly tails like occasional treats of lettuce and slightly crushed blueberries. I’ve also heard they like unsalted scrambled eggs.
