last time I fed my venus flytrap a live fly, the fly got it's head stuck between the 'teeth' while it closed so it stared at me and I had to push the little head in..why does it have to get so gruesome for me.

Austin Elliott and PsyduckNation, you're not supposed to feed all of the traps in a venus flytrap, it could overwhelm the plant and end up killing it. The general rule is that if you feed your plant, give it one insect per week at most.

I have heard from people who say they have traps in areas with heavy insect populations such that almost all traps are sprung most of the time, and they say their traps do well. I don't have experience, but I do know from other hobbies that people often make unfounded claims that are taken as truth.

Just don't make the mistake alot of people do with feeding their VTs. Use live insects as the constant moving around the insect does after the trap closes continues to trigger the trap. If you feed it dead insects and trigger the trap yourself you risk the trap thinking it was a false trigger and opening up too soon without digesting the insect.

  • @czammac

Stephany Ward No he’s been wrongly getting credit for thousands of years, it’s time actual human achievement stands above bronze age mythology. Humanity actually goes through rigorous research to provide honest analysis of the world around us but you come along and throw it away for the abrahamic religions that have fueled blood shed, corruption and the dark ages. Jehova isn’t why you have internet and a computer, it was science.

  • @lecelly6697

How is that? You have nothing to support that beyond, "my holy book said so" You have all the right to have your personal beliefs about spirituality and such but that doesn't mean you get to impose those onto the natural world and onto the sciences.

  • @lecelly6697

So the bible is correct because the bible says its correct. Great. Just because things 'LOOK LIKE' they've been created does not mean they were. You are once again masquerading your personal feelings/beliefs as logical reasoning. Can you actually cite a source that fully supports the idea of creationism without resorting to theology? Can you disprove why the earth has been calculated to be older than a few thousand years? Many well-known biologists such as Ken Miller are open about their faith and yet fully support the evolutionary model. Evolution is real, has been documented on a micro and macro level.

This is so cool! I have a small one at home and I'm keeping it well but I don't truly know how to give it better growing room/environment. We make sure it gets sunlight and water but I have about 8 traps now, all on super long stems, but still in a small plastic cup. I bought it from lowes a while ago and it's still going strong, and I've grown quite attached to it. It's the one type of plant we didn't cover in high school horticulture..

I keep flys myself and have read a bit about them and several times, books on care specifically say _not_ to do this. They usually say that at no time should all of a flytrap's traps be triggered, with food or empty. It's supposedly bad for the plant because the plant requires a mix of various states of digestion at any given time and it's too much of a strain.

TheBigChicken Technically, Venus fly traps can survive without flies. Like most plants, they get most of their nutrition via photosynthesis. However, they naturally live in dark, damp areas. To survive these conditions, they evolved the ability to capture flies in addition to photosynthesis. It's pretty cool.
