Federer coaching 20 y/o Zverev: "You think the return is better from the back?"

Just about anyone would kill for the opportunity to be coached by Roger Federer, and a 20 year old Alexander Zverev was lucky enough to find himself in that very position at the 2017 Laver Cup. What do you think of Federer's advice? Is is as important as Fed thinks that Sasha doesn't get pushed off the baseline?

I don't think wholly agree. Zverev is a more defensive player and Fed is very aggresive. He's pushing Zverev to play more offensive but if it doesn't suit his game then I'm not sure he would play well with that strategy.

@@johncharles2357 But there's no reason why it shouldn't suit his game other than his belief that it doesn't. Zverev has been at his most successful when he has taken the ball a little earlier than usual. He doesn't need to be Federer aggressive, but it's pretty clear to me that he doesn't take full advantage of some obvious attacking opportunities with which he's presented.

The advice Roger is giving is exactly the key to his, Novak's and Rafa's success. I always loved how Roger rarely ever gave up his baseline position, even if it meant taking ever groundstroke on the rise. Just watch his AO final win over Nadal in 2017. I like this interaction. Sasha wanting direction and advice and Roger giving good, balanced direction without completely changing his style of play.

Good advice from coach. At this time, Roon is the better player, and he can defeat almost all. After Alexander defeated tough opponent Tallon Griekspook, Alexander Zverev suddenly decided not to play any more. Zverev decided to drop out of the next round of the 2024 French open tennis championship next day.

Federer wants him to dominate. Usually , zverev, for all his strength and height, usually stays way beyond the baseline. Somehow, his opponents take advantage of that. Federer wants him to stay aggressive. Make and take shots near the baseline. Then if there is a chance, push further and find ways to create good strong shots that will put opponents on the defensive and zverev smashing near the net.
