We had those on our patrol cars starting with the 1974 Dodge Coronets. We started off with all blue, but eventually the department put red lenses on the drivers side. Ours had the split mirror systems which put mirror reflections both front and rear. I think these were perhaps one of the most effective light bar systems ever made. They put out a lot of light, and really lit the area up around the patrol car at night. LED strobes are good, but the sweeping beams from rotating ceiled beam bulbs provides a lot of light.

I remember when we received our new Fords in 1972, they came equipped with the new California Twin Sonic with the steady red and amber rear. Our cars had a Unitrol control box. Position one illuminated the amber light to the rear. Position 2 activated the steady red light and amber flasher and position 3 activated the whole lightbar. It was quite effective compared to our red spotlight and single rotating beacon. An amber light was mounted on the rear deck. At that time we switched from the B&M Super Chief siren to the Federal Interceptor. To be honest, the B&M was much more effective in clearing traffic than the interceptor was. Trivia, I know but this old lightbar brought back some memories..

My dad worked for SFPD for 12 years and the squad cars had many different lighting configurations over the years . Most of the cars in the 1960s had one steady burn red light in the front , a center roof mounted spot light , and a flashing amber and red light to the rear that flashed independent of each other . The siren was a CAM electro- mechanical that took forever to wind down ! The rear flashers were controlled by a single pole double throw switch . The cars that were equipped with a four bulb Dietz rotator had a push pull knob to operate that . Then in the 1970s , all the squad cars from 1972-73 when they ran Plymouth Fury's had the red steady burn , a Federal Signal Model 184 rotator , center mounted spot light , and flashing rear amber . The siren was the same but everything was controlled by the Unitrol switch box . In 1974 when they got Plymouth Satellites , an additional amber light was added on the passenger side . When my dad left the department in late 1976 , SFPD started experimenting with blue lights . A rear flashing blue light was added on the passenger side of all the new patrol cars , Chevy Malibus . The department started to experiment with light bars and electronic sirens the next year with the " baby blue and white " Novas . They used different manufacturers like Smith & Wesson , Federal , Unitrol , and Sireno until they became satisfied with the Federal CTS and Unitrol combination . My dad could care less because he moved on to a small department in Idaho where he has long since retired from .

B&M’s web page used to have a chart showing how SuperChiefs - and motor sirens in general - distribute sound waves better in front of the unit, compared to the omnidirectional pattern of electronic sirens. Disadavantage is the amperage they “pull,” especially in the computer age.

In 1970, Long Beach, CA police cars had a steady burning red lamp on the left fender and a full TwinSonic- without the California steady-burner obscuring the mirrored flashes on the red side. Much brighter than the California TwinSonic.
I remember the police in Copenhagen Denmark use twinsonic ligthbars in the 80s but only with blue domes the Danish police cars Wars too smal 😁 fore this nice ligthbar 👍👍

Did California repeal its Vehicle Code section requiring at least one “steady burning red lamp” on emergency vehicles?
