I work for the Emergency Services here and I'm sorry to disappoint everyone (because I'm an OWS lover, too) but this siren running Hi/Lo for so long was a malfunction. It just took awhile for the problem to be corrected. Louisville-Jefferson Co. runs our OWS in alert mode (never in attack) and Hi/Lo is not used. The sirens located at the firehouses were once owned and operated by the fire departments (Hi/Lo summoned the volunteers to the station) but were purchased in the 1980's by Civil Defense/DES/EMA and are under the control of the consolidated city-county government. They are activated remotely by radio and when the system was most recently updated the phase controller for this particularly siren was set incorrectly. Because there are hundred of OWS in Jefferson County there was no way to have someone present at every siren site during the monthly test so it took me hearing it from my office and making inquiries before the problem was corrected. Although slowly being supplanted by Federal 2001DC sirens, there are still dozens of 3T22 variations and Thunderbolts of all sorts around the area.

Thanks for the update! I know the 2001's are more modern, but I'm glad we still have so many of the older models around. The harmonies from the multiple tones are so cool to hear.

It is a 3T22B. 3T22A’s are triple phase and taller than 3T22Bs.

First, the correct term is 3 phase. Second, this siren is an early 3T22 with a three-phase GE motor which is shorter then that of the motor on a 3T22B despite them sharing similar designs which can confuse people who are unobservant. Third, the wind up of this siren is linear ( Like a 3T22A) while the wind up of a 3T22B is exponential. Fourth, this siren doesn't sound like crap. A dead give away to a 3T22B is its pitch is either too high or too low or wavers insanely (this siren does nither).
