    Yes and no these birds are more like parasites look up ox peckers on giraffe it will change ur outlook on these birds quite a bit I would imagine.

    @@heromedley Not because of the beak, but because the tick's teeth are embedded deep into the skin. It also has little to do with magpies and crows, as ticks cause scarring. They are seasoned hunters.

    what usually is never shown is that if those birds find open wounds, they do keep those wounds open and fresh to attract more insects. its not a perfect symbiose as always shown. source: being a zookeeper specializing in birds

    Not symbiosis. Oxpeckers are now thought to be parasitic - they eat ticks, but not for the animal's benefit, and they'll also drink their blood if there's any open wounds.

    I used to have eczema and very fine flakes of skin on my face. A friend's parakeet used to like sitting on my shoulder and do something similar to this with my face. We'd joke about it being a humanitarian but boy did I feel less itchy afterwards!

    It's amazing to think that despite both Australia and Africa both having ticks oxpeckers only evolved in Africa, looking at the poor roos in the dry up here and seeing the crows going after the fully engorged ticks gives me the heavy jeebies
