    As a software engineer myself, the fact they took the time to create the tech is already impressive. But what's more important for me is that they took the time to build tools for the tech, and took the time to teach everyone how to use it. Plus they added processes to check that everything checks out. CIG could very much surprise a lot of people in the next months. 😅

    I have to take exception to stating that 'everything checks out'. In the server meshing demo there were several examples of entities getting duplicated or not showing up and even one falling through the world. This is exactly the kind of fundamental problem that needs to not exist for the technology to be proven yet it made it in to their live demo of a trivial 3 room scenario. In summary, their having to used a ton of time to build tools for the tech and teach everyone how to use it only is a good thing if it actually works unlike things like pCache, iCache, Socs, SSOCS, and all the other times they've pushed themselves in to rework ships a dozen times.

    From what I've heard from other developers CryEngine which is what StarEngine is built off is notoriously difficult to code for, so without the tools I imagine it would all be a lost cause. Will be keen to see if anyone licenses it from them.

    Doesn't the fact that we got an in-game look at how basebuilding might work and not just some artwork drawn up mean it's already past the concept phase and already being worked on? If I remember correctly we were shown the concept art for it a few years ago.

What was shown in Starengine is what they have working now (this was not prototypes being shown, but actual stuff already integrated in Squadron working), and we will see this slowly added throughout next year. They said that now that most of the Squadron devs are coming to Star Citizen PU side, we will se much faster implementation of features.

    Given CIGs track record of how often they deliver features ahead of schedule or in good working order versus buggy placeholders, I'm not going to hold my breath that any of the features they showed off will be coming any time soon. They've just baited and switched on what they swore was coming 'next year, in the coming months, in the coming weeks, or soon' to trust them without being profoundly gullible.

I can build you FPS shooter in under month in unreal engine 5 but i cant build you unreal engine 5 though and code a whole gaming engine with all the dev tools!!! They are doing a good job there are 1000s of hour of work happening month behind the closed doors. It's not different to say Unreal Engine, they have stuff in-engine that can do everything they showcase, it's just that it doesn't get int the game or games for whatever reason.We have UE5 games that don't have full UE5 tech demo features for example, same with Cryengine back in the day, it all has to be network friendly and performance friendly which they said it was but some features won't get in the PU because it changes the gameplay, like destruction.

    The longer they take, the more my concern is being affirmed that SQ42 is influencing the design of the Persistent Universe side of the game. The problem with this is that SQ42 is a singleplayer experience and the PU is a multiplayer one. These two experiences are not compatible, they seek different objectives and I don't think people appreciate what this means enough. We say its all the same thing, one game called "Star Citizen", but in actuality they are two different games, each with distinctly different experiences. The fact that everything shared by each game was to pass through SQ42 first, means SQ42 shapes the design of those things to prioritizes its' own objective experience first and foremost. Then, it has to be adapted to the environment of the PU and people think this is a benign and trivial thing to do. It's a recipe for disaster if you are big fan of the multiplayer PU and are here primarily to play that.

  • @A5tr0101

    @A5tr0101

    I agree, balancing will be different in multiplayer but thats a given. However the assets such as the ships, armors, weapons pretty much can be added to either game

  • @VonSchpam

    @VonSchpam

    7 ай бұрын

    @@A5tr0101 It's not just the physical assets. It's the way it is designed. The mechanics that decide how it is designed, where and what priorities govern the decisions behind the way it was designed. There are different priorities involved, to suit the different needs of the two experiences. Take an IDRIS Frigate designed by SQ42 ... it will be (is) full of superfluous decisions that are ill suited to the PU, but are useful to facilitate a story-driven singleplayer game.
