I love my Feather Popular. We have learned from modern polymer pistols that plastic CAN be very durable and of high quality.

Agreed, also they can be manufactured more precisely. But, all polymers are not created equal. If GLOCK were to manufacture a polymer razor under $50, I would buy one.
IMHO, this razor shaves far better than any Merkur.

Buy the Merkur, better made and more weight.
You didn't mention anything about blade alignment.

Blade alignment of the Feather Popular is always spot on.
The black head below the doors.... Is it plastic or metal. How do you rate the longevity of this razor?

Well done review. I am new to DE shaving and plan to get one of these while I save $$ for a better one--lots of options, but good DE razors can get expensive!

Skip this one. Go with the Merkur 23C. It will cost you $15 more and last a lifetime.

Might be good to use as a cheap travel razor however.

I love my Merkur, but I wouldn't say it is light years ahead of the Popular. My Glock and Sig have plastic parts and they should last a lifetime as well.

Indeed... The Edwin Jagger is not a Feather, not a TTO... more expensive.
This is the worst safety razor I have ever used. It doesn't shave anything actually. It only trims your beard, that's all it does. The problems comes just because of the black color plastic material on the two edges. It won't allow the blade to project enough to make a cut. I think you have never shaved with this razor. If you have used it, you wouldn't have post a review about it.
