FE Civil Steel Design - Design Flexural Strength ΦMn

In this video, we calculate the design flexural strength of a wide flange beam. We also go over Cb and we calculate the design flexural strength using two different values for Cb, so that you tackle any type of questions during the test. So make sure you watch till the end of the video!
And Remember, a problem a day, keeps the "F" away 😊

    Would someone mind explaining why using the equation Mn=FyZx is incorrect? I found Zx in the same table that was used in this video for the beam and then multiplied that by 50ksi because that is what we were given for Fy. Then I multiplied that by 0.9, which is the value given in the beam section.

    Thank you! you can also solve this in 3 seconds by looking at table 3-10 on the NCEES RF handbook. NOTE: you will have to extend the curve to solve this specific problem because W21X44 is not showing completely on the table.

    Finding the right beam off of that messy table will take more than 3 seconds. Do you agree with?

    i get 252 if i follow the equation instead of using Mrx and BF. i found Sx from the table as 81.6. has anyone follow this method?

    How come your Lb is 10 ft? Isn't the definition of Lb the length between points that are braced? It should've been 20 feet, not 10. Please correct me if im wrong.

    Impressive lecture, I'm just worried, is there a chance that we could encounter doubly reinforced beam questions? It will take a lot of time to answer those type of questions.

    Hello Vic, thank you for watching and for being here. For the doubly reinforced beam, it is not really an FE question, because like you said, it will take time to answer it. I hope this helps and good luck with your studying!

    Hi, why we are taking Lb=10 ft? Gregory michaelson example 5 is almost same this question. He is taking Lb is total lenght. What is the reason?

  • @bilallsyed

    @bilallsyed

    Lb is unbraced length. In Gregory Michaelson's example there were no braces so L was equal to Lb. Here, there is a brace in the middle, so Lb = L/2

    @@nith2625 No problem, these are good questions and I did cover most of them in the video where I talk about all the 6 things you need to know about the FE, so I recommend that you watch it, if you have not. To answer your question, when you reach around 55 questions, in your screen, it will ask you if you want to take a break and it does give you a chance to submit your answer before you take the break. I hope this answers your question and good luck with your test.
