My grandfather worked at Seagrave for 50 years. I had many family members that worked there. It always makes me proud of my heritage to see these magnificent engines and the people who trust them in action.

For those of you complaining about they walking It looks like none of you know how nyc deals with emergencies. When they got that call an FDNY ambulance and the police were already there, they been dispatched just in case they need them. They walking cuz everything is under control already, when they will be the first on scene they respond way different, they do run and those trucks would be flying. I am a first respondent here in nyc. And I used to ask myself the same question cuz I didn't know about it.

If there are already police and paramedics on the scene and everything is under control why wast the tax dollars sending out the large trucks?

I’m not a firefighter but I am a first responder I see nothing wrong in this video but I know firefighters do run when they are first called on a scene but you can tell everything was under control.. hell idk but hats off to all who are first responders

allan Bryant LA.Co.FD FF here, we run to every call in FS16, we sprint to structures. Everything may be ok but you are being toned for a reason. If you are in fact needed, in the sh.. hits the fan; be there. If you are going to respond code 3 you should be running. That’s out take.

New York has always had cool mascot art. Whether it was the old lime green Engine 45 with Kermit the Frog on the grille and the words "It's not easy being green", Squad 18 "South of the Park" and the South Park boys in bunker gear, or even the Chinatown station with the dragon motif. There are some pretty cool company mascots and emblems in the FDNY

@@skidude8989 Women can do anything a man can do when I was in the Navy my wingman was a female and she was one of the best in the squadron. Female firefighters are often the same they can do what a male fire fighter does and sometimes they do it better. they don't lower the standards male or female

Must be less of an issue when you have a station on like every block. But when I spent years doing EMS and vol fire we ran into the station and gear lockers. Dressed in a 1 or under and radio and on trucks and out.

Brazilians can be a firefighter in NYC with all the requirements asked by the FDNY?

As long as you are a citizen or a resident alien with the proper documentation to work in the US

What you need to realize is its there emergency not ours. Getting in a rush gets ppl hurt/killed. How does the FD help you if they get hurt or hurt others being in a rush. "SLOW IS FAST FAST IS SMOOTH"

Jeah, our chief would definately fire us if we were to walk that slow. We have to run and we've never had anybody injured wilst running to their bunkergears. The walk slow, respond fast rule is bullshit, even on code 2 (w/o lights+ sirens) calls we get out the door faster than these guys.

Cocky gets ppl killed we are rural firefighters in the desert Arizona structure/wildlands can't speak for metropolitan firefighters. But I'm sure its the same everywhere. If you were responding to a fire is ride with another crew. Ppl like you get others hurt...

Joshua Eugin As I said, we don't get people hurt. Airport fire fighters run all the time during calls, because they have to on-scene within 3 minutes (FAA regulated). I'm pesonally not an airport fire fighter, but we are always trying to improve our response times, so that we can keep our city and civilians save. You can't do that if you don't put in the effort. In other words, you can't do that if you don't run. Lives get saved in minutes. Trying to be on scene as fast as possible saves lives, not taking your time because someone might get possibly injured.

Not all fire departments number their companies with the houses, FDNY is one that does not do this. This building houses Engine 245 as others have stated. However I agree that having Engine 78, Rescue 78, Ladder 78, Squad 78, etc. all in company 78 is a lot cooler but to each their own

They wash them every morning but, in wintertime it’s a losing battle. All the splatter from the road salt and grime trying to keep the roads safe. They can’t keep washing after every run.

A good house watchman would know the box and have sent the truck on a verbal when the chief responded, thinking the rescue may be on the air and further away!!!! And what was that fire fem looking at that was so important.

Traffic 90% of the time people don't care about lights and sirens especially NY drivers. NFYD has to use firefighters as traffic control in order to pull out. I almost ended up in the trees responding to a call in CT after a NY driver saw my lights started to pull over then just as I passed apparently thought screw it and pulled back out in front of me and my lights are Blue/Blue which in most states other then a select few are police in CT blue's are used for fire/ems

Sounded like the dispatcher said "female pinned in a vehicle" . Bascially an MVA with entrapment.

@@25mfd exactly right. They magnetically attach to the exhaust pipe on the trucks. As the trucks pull out they detach. It’s an NFPA requirement since it’s been shown that repeated exposure to engine exhaust as been one of the causes in firefighter cancer.

It’s a losing battle trying to keep them clean in the middle of winter when they are busy going out on runs frequently. More likely to wait till the end of the day to clean up before trying to sleep.

The grinning clown face featured on the back of the truck is known as Tille. The name Tillie refers to George C. Tilyou, the owner of Steeplechase Park, which operated in Coney Island for a number of years.

Man i hate a dirty appartus. I know. Its NY. And was probably cold. I started in the fire service in northern upstate NY. We had heated bays. I used to wash it in the bay. Just a personal thing.

I’d like to see a clip of ‘first on scene’ and some urgency?

Nope, they would have continued to the scene. Funny thing is just as the station tones sound, you can hear the station chief (who is in Batt 43) radio back that Tower 161 has been attached to the called, followed right after by dispatch alerting them to the same.

No point, it will just get dirty again as soon as they go out the door.

Never got why the FDNY walks around when assigned to calls. My town department is out the gates in 42 seconds even with turn out gear or they get in trouble.

Your town dept gets how many runs per shift? Some FDNY companies don't get to see their house all day. Plus response times are usually short in NYC because there are so many firehouses, 254 at last count.

These guys seem to move very slowly. Here in the UK, on call firefighters have 4 mins to walk/drive from home/their other place of work, kit up and then be driving out of the fire station. These guys took nearly the same amount of time and they were already at the station and just had to walk a few feet to get to their engine

the name it was created with was Fire Department of the City of New York, so FDNY is correct.

It’s FDNY because the FD was around BEFORE there was a City of New York. Hence the name reflects that.

A lot of departments have stopped running in the station. Decreases injuries and anxiety.

At first, the ladder was not dispatched, only the chief. It was not until almost halfway through the clip that the ladder was dispatched.

Because in North America RED is the colour for emergency vehicles. Blue is an extra colour for visibility in poor light conditions. In several places, especially in Canada, blue is for snowplows because the human eye can see blue better in snowy conditions than any other colour.

Good question. I think red is not so well visible than blue because tail lights and traffic lights are red as well, so harder to differentiate from. Blue would have a bigger contrast, which is one of the reasons why many well developed countries have their emergency vehicles lighted up only in blue.

We sure don't. Our rigs are just perpetually dirty for winter time because we wash them and then go on another run two hours later anyways. Still try to hose them down a few times a week though.

That's one of the slowest responses I have ever seen! Here in the UK your in and out in under 3 mins. My local station you can hear the warning go and trucks are coming out before you've stood up to look out

Emerald Zebra First off, you have no idea what the hell you're talking about. The batallion got the call in the beginning. The truck didnt even get the tones until 1:37. They were out the door in 1 minute in a half. You have no idea what due they are likely don't even know what the term due means. They had Rescue dispatched already, along with other units, and they weren't even a first due on the box. Keep your opinions to yourself if you have no clue wtf you're talking about. No one gives a shit about your response times wherever the hell your from.

They RUN to get their gear and get in and get dressed in the truck! These guys look like they are going for a casual summers drive... Mate just face it. We are better and your ego can't take it

I wonder what type of call is it was I didn’t hear it. It would have been our ass if we took that long to respond. It appears to me they’re in no hurry. When we had a ring down, everyone is running to the rig in it and out the door. Response time is very critical to saving life and property. My brothers you can do better then this. Stay Thirsty This was very far into SECOND DUE area. The reason why they weren’t in such a rush was because they were thinking they weren’t going to be needed, because it was so far away. Which is what happened. Other units arrived first and they were told there services were not needed. They never even made it there and returned to quarters.

FJ you obviously don't know how FDNY works. An ambulance and police were already toned, they were just showing up in case they were needed. In other words, they can afford to be a bit slower. FDNY's been around 150 years, they know what they're doing. And as for the truck, do you know how dirty the streets are? Especially with melting snow. You get a TON of mud and dirt. Plus they don't always have time in between calls to wash it up.
