Just recently on father’s day I saw a grave marker was vandalized. It appeared that someone did a burnout with their car on top of it. Couldn’t make out the name or dates. Shameful act.

This offends me to my core. Not only are they gravestones, but some of those belonged to elders who have passed on great stories before they died.

As caretakers of a very old cemetery I can explain a few things for comments I keep seeing that are lacking empathy or putting the blame on anyone but the vandals: - Most cemeteries, in particular old cemeteries, are cared for by volunteers usually on their own time and dime. And it’s a lot of work and cost. - Often times, especially in rural areas, you are not tending them everyday… part of that whole volunteer thing… but only when the grass needs mowed, weeds trimmed, graves dug, etc. And yes, folks can get sick, injured, travel, and so forth and might not be there for a few days. - June 25th was the last known time a caretaker saw the cemetery undamaged. Today the damage was found by someone connected. The person or people who help take care of the cemetery might have been ill or traveling, or whatever that they were not there for those few days. It’s not that long. You’re talking a week or slightly over. Most cemeteries, especially if it is dry, don’t need mowed only once a week. That’s why they are asking for reports of anyone that visited the cemetery since then so they can better determine when the damage was done. It seems no one reported the damage prior to that time period; so maybe there were no visitors or passersby who noticed. - Most cemeteries, obviously, cannot afford trail cameras, let alone security cameras or security. 🙄 Lots are sold, not rented, and the “tenants” are obviously not capable of paying rent for maintenance and security. Most cemeteries don’t even have donations to help with maintenance and upkeep except for the volunteers who do so at their own cost. - The only ones to blame are the vandals.

Excellent explanation of the realities of most cemeteries. I have friends who have been taking care of an old cemetery opposite their rural home for over 40 years. It was already closed before they volunteered to maintain it but when one of their children died of cancer, they received special permission to bury him there. It was a comfort to them to have his grave there where they could just walk across the road to visit with him. But now they are in their seventies and they worry about who will take over when they are eventually unable to do it themselves. The church that owned that cemetery had moved away from their old building before they started maintaining the cemetery and now that church no longer exists. The legal status of the cemetery is in question, so whoever takes over will probably have to be someone who is willing to do it as a volunteer service.

I agree with you. It has always been there and now it's like we're going through the 1930s again. As soon as I started seeing the pro-palestine protesters, their attitude, their bullying reminded me of the brown shirts. I'm old, born after WWII and I'm not Jewish. I've always wondered how ordinary Germans became supporters of the persecution of Jews. Now, I see it with my own eyes. She’s not the groundskeeper. She’s the executive director of a group of Jewish Cemetery organizations; likely like a historical society that keeps records of the stones and graves there and maybe history about each person for geneology. Don’t blame anyone but the vandals who did it.

8 days might be the last known date they know the stones were upright and not knocked down. Plus, maybe the cemetery doesn't have full-time staff due to budget reasons or they only go to the cemetery when needed.

@@glefic I apologize for messing up the words. I’d recommend not assuming. It’s called dyslexia. I mess up or miss words. It’s not a choice nor reading “what you wanted to” when on misses words or they are rearranged. However, while being particular about your wording, you’re still missing the point and still blaming her and the groundskeeper. The only ones to blame are the vandals. 🤔 Kind of negates taking issue with missed wording. I made another comment separately as a caretaker of an old cemetery that was vandalized to hopefully help give some perspective. I don’t know the particulars in this situation, of course, but might help. Considering caretakers of cemeteries help to keep and honor the memories of those folks who’ve gone before and are buried there, it’s a tragedy to have the place you cared for be vandalized like this. It’s a desecration of hallowed ground. I’d suggest empathy because they’re the ones who have to restore all of this likely at the cost of their own time and money and there’s always the fear that it or worse will happen again.

I don't know whose the jerk or jerks who did this, but this is disrespectful and cowardly.

In Surabaya City Indonesia, there is a Jewish cementery that still standing but the Synagogue is demolished in 2013.

Local cemeteries there need to set up some trail cameras if they can afford to.* When the old cemetery our family has cared for over the last six decades as a promise to a man born in the late 1800s was vandalized, we spoke to a local police officer. No FBI ever got involved. As far as I know any of the times cemeteries have been vandalized or stolen from only state police got involved. Our cemetery has graves from hundreds of years ago, but stones from the late 1800s back. We have veterans from multiple wars buried here, as well as families including children. Some stones were damaged in the 1960s, in multiple instances. Twenty years ago someone stole the sign we got the township to finally put up. It wasn’t even up a couple of days. A few months later someone proceeded to bust or knock over most of the stones. They stole about a dozen, including a large stone for a War of 1812 veteran and some footers, some of which were for children. Evidence from the ruts and tracks indicated they used a vehicle, likely a truck, to ram into some to break them off and load them up. A state police officer came out, a newspaper after I wrote and submitted an article about it… which they put under opinion for some reason. The poor police officer showed up to up our farm one day during milking, all excited. Someone had called about finding a stone in the ditch and he went and retrieved it in the hopes of restoring the stone. When he opened the trunk, my dad felt terrible breaking the news to him that it wasn’t one of ours and that meant another cemetery had been vandalized. My dad, grandpa, and I spent weeks, during Spring planting of course, digging out the bases to level them and clean them up. Traffic that went by would freak out after slowing down to see what we were doing and then gas it like we were ghosts or something. Even some folks we know who were walking at the time warily hurried by. None of them ever set foot into the cemetery, alone offered to help. A company that makes stone carvings and tombstones offered to help us patch them with stone epoxy, but first we had to restore and level the bases for those that were left. They were able to help us restore even some of the older damaged ones as best we could. They were great. The VA had two new stones made for two veterans; one for the one that was stolen and another that was damaged. A local VFW funded getting a large foundation boulder from the old school engraved at the stone company for a sign with a map and engraving that honored the veterans; since those things and their flags get stolen too. We even had a man contact me who maintained an old cemetery in his area. He offered advice and tips, and told the story of how they caught the vandals there and he insisted the judge put them to work helping him restore everything. And they did. Hopefully there are kind folks in that area who will help restore the stones. *This cemetery and other local ones need to get some trail cameras or enlist the help of folks who already have some to use. If they set them up in a place more obscure and difficult to steal, hopefully they can have documentation if another destruction happens. Unfortunately, given our experience that did happen here. It wasn’t even to the closest cemeteries either, but in the same county. Tech wasn’t around or as affordable as it is now, so maybe they could get some feasible options. It won’t stop it, but it could help document it for evidence.

😳Wow. Thank you for all your hard work. I'm not Jewish (I'm a Christian) and one of the things I will absolutely not tolerate is antisemitism. But I also don't hate people; hate is what caused this, what caused the Holocaust to happen. I do pray for those people who have been misguided by their ideologies and hope that God will open their eyes to the damage they have caused. Some people are just full of rage, fear, hatred. It affects their daily lives, their health, the people around them. But sooner or later (for many), that rage is gonna burn out. They become lost and confused, even depressed; however, some realize that they were wrong and they change their ways. I wonder if I should buy a trail camera and donate to a local Jewish cemetery. I would love to help. Once again, thank you for your hard work keeping the cemetery maintained and beautiful.

@@LethalSaliva Thank you very kindly. Our family has no tolerance for any hate or things like this either. It’s beyond disgusting. We also do not hate people. “Hate begets hate” as they say; it can spread and do great harm, and no good. Lord only knows why vandals damaged and stole stones at the cemetery we care for. Vandalism and theft should never be a “prank” or “challenge” or whatever mild terms some label them as. It seems even worse if the vandals target tombstones of folks of a certain religion as in this case than when it’s just destruction for destruction’s sake. It’s a wonderful thought, but it’s a good idea to ask first about the trail camera before purchasing, because using one might not be an option. The location and layout of the cemetery would be a deciding factor. If a cemetery has trees where a camera can be hidden out of sight it could be a possibility. If it’s an open cemetery with no place for a camera to be discreet, it will unfortunately invite trouble if it even stays long. I don’t like to be negative about it, but it’s scenarios we have considered and unfortunately one has to plan for worst case scenarios. Other things that may make a caretaker hesitant is who is really in charge, if they have the manpower and tech/tech savvy to manage a trail cam, and maintenance costs. Unless they are solar powered, trail cameras do need SD cards and battery changes at various times. If you’re interested and do not know who manages or tends the cemetery, if the neighbors don’t know, usually local historical societies should have the info on who to contact to ask. Oftentimes townships or parishes have that info or the county government. Around here some older “abandoned” cemeteries become the responsibility of the local township to tend… if they do that and actually take care is another issue. Also, if you don’t have a specific Jewish cemetery near you, please consider asking for another cemetery. Unfortunately, as we know, vandalism and junk sometimes gives bad apples ideas. It did around here and who knows if it was done by the same lot. It’s ruddy awful. I hope they can do that to the cemetery mentioned in this video that was damaged and as many local cemeteries as possible.

Vandalizing graves does not make America great again. But it gives a courageous Proud Boy something to do.

I’m fighting back against this evil antisemitism. Our church has been helping displaced Israeli families and we provide security for a local synagogue. I’m a Christian and I’m willing to give up everything to help the Jews
