Yeah, this little exchange was SO typical of a Fawlty Towers' dialogue: simple, but SO funny that it is timeless. I laughed my ass off as an 8-year old, and I still laugh at it. Even if you never watched the whole episode you'd still scream laughing it. 🤣😆

This episode is so well balanced ... Basil constantly derides Mr. Brown, who it turns out is trying to help him, while fawning over "Lord" Melbury who wants to rip him off.

It’s actually brilliant. It sums up the big problem with the English class system. It’s not necessarily the upper class types who make life difficult for us ordinary folk; it’s other ordinary folk who happen to be snobs who cause problems for people who are, in fact, just like them. I’ve worked for lower class guys who fawn over privately-educated, wealthy but thick colleagues and when you see this it makes you want to sick in a bucket. And when they take a particular group of people’s advice over those people who actually know what they’re doing, based just on how someone sounds or is dressed, then the results can be disastrous…

@@JMBluecoat8289 it’s one of the aspects of the episode that I thought would make it outdated, but sadly is still totally applicable today. The class thing is such bullshit and people STILL prejudge because of how someone speaks. All my friends I’ve met who have moved to the uk from abroad think it’s super weird here for that

John and Connie truly cared about producing quality work. So they made doubly sure that Mr Brown and Manuel's Spanish was grammatically correct while Basil's was rubbish 😅

Throughout my TV watching history, shows such as The Simpsons, Thunderbirds, etc, have had great one-off characters. I can confirm that Fawlty Towers is another fantastic example, justified by the characterisation of Danny Brown - a co-operative, intelligent and cool working-class undercover cop who unintentionally makes Basil jealous (especially with his fluency in Spanish) and looks to me like he's had the hots for Polly since his first interaction with her.

Andrew Sachs, who plays Manuel, did not actually speak Spanish despite the character he was playing. Later on he took part in a BBC TV programme about language learning, in which he learned something of the language.

Andrew Sachs’ native language was actually German. He was born in 1931 in a German Jewish family so for obvious reasons had to flee his birth country.

I have to be honest, I have the box set of all episodes and loved it so much that I can’t help commenting on it in a good way.

I never noticed that was Mr.Brown. It's so funny how acting different can make you appear to be a different person too😂

There’s so many class references.

Basil later says he learnt "Classical Spanish", not the "strange dialect" that he claims Manuel picked up. Obviously, "Classical Spanish" just doesn't cut the mustard for everyday conversation.

Whilst I love all of the characters in FT over the episodes from the deaf Mrs Richards (Joan Sanderson) to the Wardolf salad episode with Harry Hamilton (Bruce Boa), you get to realise what a great actor and comedian John Cleese is. Love Prunella Scales too. I can see so much in common with my relationship with my wife!

John and Polly created a tremendously funny character in the tortured and miserable, "Basil Faulty". The entire cast was good, but John sure led the show.

He mostly tortured himself . But there were occasions when his miserable life was not entirely his fault. For instance Sybil`s annoying phone conversations with Audrey in bedroom or nasty mrs. Richards who had no idea where she left her money. But loudmouth bully American was 100 % his fault, if he gave chef Terry 5 pounds he demanded and pocketed rest of 15, Americans dinner would be fine and Basil would be in profit. He surely should have taken better care of water tank where dead pigeons were floating and demand the chef would keep an eye on expiration dates of kippers and sausages. In hotel like that you have to throw some groceries gone bad away, you just cant offer customers half-rotten food to save money.

Saw an interview with David Kelly who played Mr O’Reilly - seems he was allowed to have a lot on input into his character, which is I feel very respectful for how parts work better.

Don't forget the menu.

John Cleese qui joue Basil a trouvé l’inspiration pour Fawlty Towers dans des événements réels. En tournée avec ses confrères des Monty Python dans le sud ouest de l’Angleterre ils avaient été particulièrement mal accueillis dans un hôtel miteux de Torquay.

Manuel: Oh sir, you speak Spanish! Brown: Only a little, I’m sorry but I’ve forgotten a lot. Manuel: No sir, you speak very well! Very very well, formidable! Brown: Thank you, thank you Manuel: I’ll go get it now.

According to Google translate, Basil said something like: Otilia the beating in the white sports car, and at seven please.

There is nothing Spanish about Manuel's gestures, body language or intonation. He comes across to me more as an Italian.

risvegliato well, he was actually speaking gibberish based on French and Italian. Valise is French for case, and sportif is also French. Bianco is Italian for white… Mr Brown said it better than Basil but even he conceded he’d forgotten much of his Spanish!

Brahms Third Racket!

Mr Brown did have a liking for Polly, but Polly kept her professional distance and got on with being a waitress.

Not sure I've ever seen a TV show that is so excellent, and yet, at the same time, so overrated. I've watched it a dozen times and it's brilliant, but definitely not the best TV show ever made or even Top 10 as some people suggest. This scene in particular is rather bland.
