Episode Notes:
1. Let me know what other systems you'd like to see me do this for!
2. Super SF2 on the Genesis has sound and color hacks you can get in one shot. It really does take this port to a new level on original hardware. The one shown here is from Lord Hiryu.
www.romhacking.net/hacks/6059/
3. Midnight Resistance on the Genesis has better music than the arcade version. It's not even close.
4. Mega Turrican is also on the Amiga as Turrican 3.
5. I'm quite fond of World of Illusion, but still prefer Castle just a bit more.
6. Sonic 2 and 3 are the best games in the series. They are the pinnacle of that style of design.

It really is a remarkable-looking game, simple in hindsight but absolutely charming and perfect for me and my friend to co-op play at our not-so-advanced age. The differences in campaigns, the whimsy and catchy music, and the shark boss that's still scary, I don't care how old I get. All that and Donald and Mickey really play and feel like their characters thanks to all the wonderful animation touches... Definitely one of the best licensed games, really need a relaunch or to be made available somehow. Unless it already is, somewhere?

@Jared Juggernaut I think that it's like... a platforming adventure game you can play co-op in really is part of the magic. Sure, I played Contra (or Super Probotector, EU and all) and Turtles in Time and Sunset Riders with siblings and friends, but the aggressive action of those kind of games felt different than World of Illusion. Maybe it's that you really help each other, and don't just fight enemies? And Donald and Mickey have ways to interact with each other, most other co-op games of the time feels like you're just separate islands that don't really interact with each other. So gorgeous graphics with great animations along with gameplay actions that really sell the "you're working TOGETHER" theme, I wonder if that's what really makes it stick in my mind. Perhaps my experience would've been very different if I had just played it solo.

@@goranisacson2502 Absolutely, the co-op mechanism was outstanding. The animations when the characters were on top of each other, climbing ropes or Mickey pulling Donald through tight spots. Brilliant! One of the best two player adventures ever in my opinion. I had forgotten that shark boss... Yikes, he was scary to a little kid like me! 😁

Diamond Dust Zone from "Sonic 3D Blast" has always been one of my favorite levels in the game due to how much I enjoy winter-themed levels in some games, and I also loved the level themes for both Acts, which fill me up with nostagia every time I hear them.

Total agreement with Streets of Rage 2. I thought you might mention it here. I love these videos, man! I always look forward to your content! In Contra Hardcorps, my absolute favorite stage is the one where the ending is Colonel Bahamut escaping in a helicopter where it turns out the alien DNA is a fast mutating virus that infects everything around it. I love all the setpieces in that stage with the foreboding music and the infected soldiers transforming into monsters and eating each other, and the references to the other final stages in previous Contra games but with a different spin because the bigger enemies are implied to be mutated from infected humans the deeper into the stage you go, culminating in a battle with a big alien queen with a weird human face. I really feel like it nailed that alien horror element more than any other in the series and I love it!

Definite ones for me would have to be: The Minecart stage from Gunstar Heroes. The action is awesome, the music is great and its probably one of the best boss battles on the system. Heck from Earthworm Jim. The soundtrack and the enemies make this one for me, fighting lawyers and a snowman that breathes fire is just the height of silly and I love it! The Machine planet in Ristar also springs to mind. It's got some of the catchiest music on the system and the stages are really challenging. The maze can be very difficult but also make you look like a pro when done right. Those are just off the top of my head, sure I could come up with more!

Aquatic Ruin is brilliant level design that rewards careful platforming. First few times you play it, you're going to trudge through the water (and maybe even drown a couple of times), but once you learn how to time your jumps properly, you can whip through it similarly to Emerald Hill Zone. The other water stages in Sonic don't offer such an alternative and submerge you in the water for most of the level.

You are a legend man. The only guy I wish I could retro game with. This is my top 10 in no order. Jurassic Park Rampage Edition: Cargo Ship, Amazing graphics, game play and I love the music in that stage as well as how it progresses from outside to inside the ship. Streets Of Rage 2: Baseball Stadium, I mean, my favourite track in that game and I love how every level progresses in that game. Far smoother than the first game. Rocket Knight's Adventure: Stage 6, I mean wicked music and that level gives you one impressive challenge compared to all stages in the game prior. This level set the tone for the rest of the game as how much more aggressive your playstyle will have to become. Bio Hazard Battle: Stage 3 Jungle, The enemies, the bosses, the audio, I mean, this level to me was perfect. I find this game to be highly underrated. Sonic & Knuckles: Stage 2, the best music in my opinion from any Sonic game, it just kept you wanting more and more. This level is the music that sells it so damn well, and you can tell this is a Michael Jackson song. Alien 3: Stage 2, An amazing rocking tune in the background that keeps you pushing to find the prisoners before they meet their fate. The level of detail in the environments and the horrific styling of the deceased made this level creepier then the rest outside of Stage 4. Urban Strike: Vegas, I love the night fighting, and how intense this level is. I love how explosions light the night sky, and love the way this mission plays out. It blew my 6 year old mind when I watched someone for the first time show me past Stage 2, and that level left a permenant memory. Revenge Of Shinobi: Chinatown, The music in that stage is some of Yuzo Koshiros best, and it really sets the tone and atmosphere to that kick stage. The layout, the enemies, the atmosphere and more just sell that stage. Streets Of Rage: Final Stage, The music again sets the atmosphere, the windows showing how its turning from night to day, facing all former foes again, on top of the final showdown with Mr. X, that level has always impressed me. I will never forget beating it with my brother for the first time. Toy Story: Second level at Sids House, I love the music especially, the atmosphere is dark, I also find this to be one of the most underrated and amazing Sega Genesis games of all time. The story following the movie literally, the level designs constantly reminding you of the movie, the audio, the 3D elements, and more make this entire game worth owning and a must have. Apologies for being so late to the party.

Sonic & Knbuckles - Lavareef Zone A massive zone with a lot of atmosphere. The loomin Death Egg in the background, a boss battle so different from all other bosses in this game, great music and a strong shift in tone for the 2nd act. Megaman: The Wily Wars - Mega Water S. Stage. awesome backgrounds and the music in megaman is always great. Mega Bomberman - Area 2 Vexin' Volcano. Driving a minecart and bombing enemies the can fast detonate your bombs, while lava is raining down. All that an a theme, that sicks in your head for weeks. Ristar - Planet Sonata. In the first level of this planet, you build up the music by giving metronomes to birds. This song is the theme of the bossbattle. But it's level 2, that I really like. The theme is the same, as before, but faster and more energetic. Guitars are dancing and everything is upbeat.

It's a mix of stages Chemical Plant and Oil Ocean stages for me on Sonic 2. As for Ranger X, there is something unique about playing that stage where you're just going up the side of a building. The reflections and the breaking of the glass was something I loved looking at back then.

14:09 YESSSSSSS 1 Billion percent!!!! Back in the day my friends hated playing this game because it was a "poor contra clone," but I loved playing it for the music itself. After putting some time in, you can show them that you can get good at a poor-contra-clone and give it some replay value.

I wish marble zone was on the updated dlc pack of sonic mania including other zones from the sonic series. Like Death Egg Zone, Sky Sanctuary Zone, Hidden Palace Zone, Mushroom Hill Zone, Wacky Workbench Zone, Tidal Tempest Zone, Palmtree Panic Zone, Aquatic Ruin Zone, Sandopolis Zone, Scrap brain zone, Casino Night Zone, Emerald Hill Zone, ANGEL ISLAND ZONE, IceCap Zone, Marble Zone, Scrap Brain Zone, knuckles chatiox/3d blast/sonic 1/sonic 3 and knuckles alternative bonus stages, knuckles chaotix final stage and boss. Also, the unused and missing stages that never appear of sonic mania.

Mishaela's stage in Shining Force is my favourite of that game and, like Midnight Resistance, it's the music that makes it so. I'd often just not move during a turn in order to let the music playout. Really, it's the music in general that makes SF1 my favourite of the series.

Part 1 had more games that I grew up with, but I'm happy to see the stuff I missed out on in this video. I always felt that most of my Genesis games were great, but as good as I had it growing up, I still never came close to seeing everything the system had to offer.

These two videos were great! Data East and their run and guns were similar in structure. Awesome gameplay, not fantastic but passable visuals, and amazing music that made the game. Everything said about Midnight Resistance you can apply verbatim to Bloody Wolf on Turbografx. If you're going to do a fan version of these my vote goes to stage 1 of X-Men 2: Clone Wars. You turn your Genesis on and bam you're playing the game. Your X-Person randomly chosen. No fuss, no waiting, just get to it. Once you beat it then you get the intro screen. Also the snow effect is great. The stage overall does a great job making you hyped for the rest of the game.

Love these favorite stage videos! So far a lot of the games I love have been featured here. One stage I did love though from a game I’m yet to see is the Technodrome from TMNT: Hyperstone Heist, the different enemy types, elevator segment and music are all top notch! Definitely one to consider if there is a 3rd segment.

Amazing video. Some of my favorite stages: Ys III- Ilvern Ruins and Valestein Castle. World of illusion- underwater adventure stage. Splatterhouse 2- crystal prison. Castlevania Bloodlines: Versailles Palace. Fatal Fury- Geese Howard stage (the tune on Mega Drive is not that great, but the setting is excellent). And if you count Sega CD games too: Sonic CD- stardust speedway 3 (Sonic vs Metal Sonic) Final Fight CD (subway and bay area).

My favorite is from Target Earth/Assault Suits Leynos, stage 8: after you and your allies fight through endless waves of enemy forces, your commander sacrifices himself by blowing an opening on the gigantic enemy mothership. In a rare moment in the game, you are completely alone with no friendlies or comms. Despite being surrounded by traps and defense turrets in the mothership, your commander died because he believed that you could stop the enemy general and end the brutal war. I can list other favorite stages (and plenty were mentioned already), but that game and stage left a huge impression on me in my younger days. The PS4/PC remake is great too as a budget title
