Favorite Dahlia Varieties to Grow For Cut Flowers! A Tour of Our Dahlia Garden

Today we’re in the dahlia patch.
Dahlias are the quintessential fall flower. And honestly, I have a deep appreciation for dahlias because long after the summer garden starts to slow down and the heat loving annuals start to fade- the dahlias rev up just in time to sort of finish out the season for us.
Right now it’s early October here in West Michigan. While we haven’t had a kill frost just yet- we have had some pretty cool weather this week and so the dahlias have slowed down a little bit with their blooms
So before the season is fully over, I do want to share a few of my favorite varieties with you in case you’re looking to add some to your own collection.

Thanks so much for another great video. Love to see all that you do, especially since you do not lots of acreage like many flower farmers do. Keep up the good work, both in videos and on your farm.

Well done! My first year growing dahlias. I picked the pom-pom variety. It has been such a pleasant surprise - easy to grow with tons of blooms. Going to view the dahlia cuttings video next. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your favorites. I love hearing about varieties that make the cut for flower farmers. Also thanks for sharing the idea of growing maybe fewer varieties but more of them. While not a flower farmer, I'm building up my stock and until now have had 1 of a bunch of varieties, but I see the merit in growing multiple of a fewer varieties and I might have to alter my plans for next year! Now for some success in overwintering!

I enjoyed your video a lot, thanks so much for sharing! I grew a bunch of dahlias in my front garden this year and enjoyed having them in 5he garden and cutting them as cut flowers. Can't wait to see your next video on lifting and storing daliahs. What do you do to prevent from fungi infection such as power mildew?

  • @twosistersflowerfarm

Thanks so much for watching! We honestly don’t do much to prevent powdery mildew on our dahlias. The dahlias always seem less affected by the powdery mildew compared to other crops like our zinnias. This year I did spray a spray called ‘Cease’ and ‘Mil-Stop’ every few weeks and I feel like those produces helped us a lot 💛

I greatly appreciate all you are sharing about your farming practices. Thank you. For myself, sincerely intending to *not* come across as critical in any way. When you say small patch of dahlias, would you please, give a little more detail, a definition of "small patch"? # of rows, width & length, plants per row, spacing. Your thinking in choosing the width and length, plant spacing. What is the production of that small patch, how many stems are you able to harvest from that size patch? I am aware younger plants yield fewer stems. Include, percentage, or number of younger plants, to older higher yielding plants, past & last season's yield, what you expect for the next season's yield. I hope learning about other's practices will help me think about and wisely plan my own patch. I have about 10 dahlias, (some in pots,a couple in the ground) if they survive my Virginia zone 7a winter. I plan/hope to purchase more spring 2023. I am not yet flower farming, praying I get to begin fall 2023. I have never sold a stem of anything, basically still a gardener. I'd like as much information as you are comfortable sharing to establish a bed for my dahlias, one to increase rapidly. I think this kind of information will help me plan where, and how much space. Again, gratitude for sharing your experience.
