Faustrime and Arcobal

New citrus acquisitions:
Faustrime, which is a Hybrid between Fingerlime (Microcitrus australasica) and Limequat (Fortunella japonica x Citrus aurantiifolia) of the 'Eustice' Variety. The small flowers have a delicate and pleasant scent. Tiny embyronic fruits are forming. The plant arrived with two sausage-shaped fruits close to ripeness- a nice surprise.
Arcobal, which is a Hybrid between a Meyer Lemon (Citrus × meyeri) and Blood Orange (Citrus sinensis) of the Variety 'Doppio Sanguinello' .
I don't normally buy citrus and other subtropical fruiting plants from UK nurseries, as they have a habit of not bothering to specify the Name of the Varieties they import from France, Italy/Sicily, Spain and Portugal. For example, you might be offered a generic 'Lemon', a generic 'Fingerlime' or a generic 'Orange', with no mention of the Variety. In contrast, over on the European Mainland they frequently do specify the Variety Name.
However, on this occasion, I did buy from a UK nursery, as 'Arcobal' and 'Faustrime' are rarely-offered citrus (rarely-offered by by UK standards!) and they are Named Varieties and/or Named Citrus Hybrids (you can't get more specific and detailed than that!).
Yes, I am very exacting and particular......it's just the way I am!

Wow! That was very rocky soil. You would have thought the sellers would want to repot the plants, if only to make them lighter, and thus cheaper to send😆 Both plants sound amazing. I have actually just ordered an Arcobal. I love the sound of it and the fruit look so beautiful on the photos I've seen. The Faustrime sounds such an exciting hybrid too. It sounds like it's essentially a giant Finger Lime. Definitely one for my wish list.

Great buys Gary. In fact the 2nd pot seems to have substantial quantities of natural volcanic rock in it and therefore may well be very aerated despite its weight, if the fine particles are predominantly sand it would probably stay healthy in it for quite some time. Despite your self proclaimed obsession lol, you could safely have bought any fingerlime plant in the uk as they would all be recognised cultivars, nobody bothers to grow them from seed. It's simply a matter of determining whether you want a pink, yellow, red or green fleshed fruit as they all seem to have a very similar taste 😁

Cheers, Brett. I might mix a little of its original soil into the aggregates. If it is volcanic (it appears to be), then it will contain lots of minerals. However, there is no advantage, in terms of root growth, in having massive boulders in the pot. I will wash that boulder and keep it as a paperweight or something, lol. You know what I'm like.........I insist on knowing the Name of the Variety. There must be some discernible difference in flavour and acidity versus sweetness among different fingerlime varieties and hybrids between fingerlimes and other citrus. The printed label of my plant says 'Fingerlime', but in sharpie pen it says 'Faustrime'. The printed label describing the plant as a 'fingerlime' is incorrect, because the plant I have is not technically a fingerlime- it is a Hybrid/Cross between a fingerlime and a non-fingerlime citrus: a 'Eustice' Limequat.

Awesome varieties, Gary. The Faustrime is a very vigourous plant and the fruits grow huge.. Great that you managed to grab both as they are still pretty rare here.👍🏽

Cheers, Dom. Yes, the two fruits on it are rather large compared to non-hybridised fingerlimes. They are probably almost ripe, but it is not easy to tell, as they remain green.

@@garycard1456 Yes the fruit seem ready, just going by the size but in fact I think they get a lot larger, double that size and quite fat, if you can believe it. I think they turn a lighter shade shade of green, 'almost' yellowing when ready.

Lovely new additions, Gary! Both plants look very healthy. It's great to see you have a few fruits already set on them as well! Like you, I also like to have named varieties, although I settled with a generic fingerlime as I couldn't source any named varieties and I figured it should turn out to be a decent one (well hopefully anyway).

Like both yourself and Gary, I too like named varieties ... It allows the grower to get some idea of what the fruits are like before hand. Then after we're able to review the fruit and give an opinion on the variety. Your fingerlime may be the 'Sanguinea' variety as these are the ones I've seen most often in the UK. When it fruits for you, you'll be able to cross-reference it with online pictures to confirm.

@@MoebiusUK Yeah, it will most likely be one of the most common varieties. It's actually covered in flower buds, there must be hundreds of them.

@@MoebiusUK I think there is a lot of variation among fingerlimes and fingerlime hybrids. Variation in fruit flavour, acidity versus sweetness, fruit size, growth habit, etc. I'd love to get hold of a 'Rick's Red', 'Alstonville', 'Sunrise Lime', 'Red Center Lime', etc.

To think what was available at a click of a mouse, then the post-Brexit customs red tape took all that away........it is frustrating! Regardless of whether one is pro-Brexit or anti-Brexit, surely a free trade between the UK and countries on the European Mainland is beneficial to both the UK and those European Mainland countries? Oscar Tintori have a great selection of Named Fingerlimes and Named Fingerlime Hybrids/Crosses

@@garycard1456 yeah, it's incredibly frustrating. Hopefully, things will improve in time and the red tape is removed 🤞. Although, I won't be holding my breath lol 😂
