Father, son recount frightening shark attack off Maui

A professional photographer by trade, Daniel Sullivan did not have the chance to capture the image of the shark that sunk his kayak on Tuesday, Feb. 2, off Maui. One could bet that it is burned into his memory, however.

The great white is the only shark I know that strikes its pray like that, preferably seals... they would go deep to camouflage them selves and use the depth of the deep so when the great white rushes up it gains tramendous speed due to thy pressure of the deep ocean surprising its pray befor it'll even know it. hitting its pray with so much force it literally lunges its whole body out of the water with its meal in its mouth then with teeth like razor blades it shreds off chunks of meat as if it were a knife slicing through butter instantly disabling its meal.

It’s just my theory, but there have been a greater number of attacks on humans this year on Maui and I believe it’s due to the very warm waters in the Arctic Sea this year. Humpbacks feed on krill and other small crustaceans and global warming has produced an inordinate amount of food source for these huge creatures in their summer feeding grounds. They continued to feed much later in the year than in years past and were late in arriving (late Nov) in large numbers to their warm calving waters of Maui (and other Hawaiian Islands). Tiger sharks and now recent newcomers, Great White Sharks, arrived at the usual time (late Oct) to feed on sick or dying whales, still born calves and “non-combative” free “after birth” (hundreds of pounds per whale) and since the whales were late, they started looking at other available food sources (people) and have been much more aggressive, thus the greater number of attacks this season. Just my thought.

When you live there in maui this is something you know. The dolphin have a job when whale season comes around. If they are hanging around a mother whale and baby it is to protect the baby from the shark. It seems they surround the mother whale before the birth of the baby and stay around for some time giving the baby sometime to get comfortable and strong other wise a sharks will come in and try to eat the new born baby whale. We had heard that story and them friends sailing out there got it on film and conformed our idea of the dolphins task. We never get to swim with the dolphins while it is whale season because they were never around. Tiger sharks. Waters to warm for great whites. Maybe a couple around but very few.

It must be a great white from the look of the bite mark and pushing way up. The shark may mistaken the kayak as dolphin or young whale. A 16-in wide sample bite may belong to a 13 ft great white, the terrible taste of plastic disgusted the great white. If it were a tiger or bull, they would not been able to swim a mile after the attack because tiger and bull eat human.
