(Father & Son) Randy VS Therien Paskemin @ Shelton Powwow 2017

Father Randy takes on his sonny boy Therien. As they battle it out Therien takes the win for this one. This was great to be there live and witness this great moment of powwowing between father and son. The Love between each other was definitely there. After the special was over there was lost of love going on between the Paskemin's as they were proud of Therien.

people think its just a father and son dancing ...It's a father and son sharing the love of dance. Giving back to the commumity And teaching people outside of it. The culture And good nature of the tribe while honoring the family members before them Pure enjoyment

Glad to see my northern cousins honoring the ancient traditions unfortunately I wasn't so lucky to be raised in my culture, I only found out later in life that I was chiricahua apache and raramuri from Mexico on my dad's side and they were forced to abandon their native heritage from the colonizers because I don't even have an Indian name and just as our American tribal cousins endured great atrocities under white rule in the US we endured similar atrocities in Mexico under Spanish and later Mexican rule. I love learning not just about my own heritage but my cousins and I know we are not really family but we are all related by our shared heritage of turtle island. Much love and respect to my Indian brothers and sisters please cherish your heritage and keep fighting to practice it and protect it because you never know how precious it is until you lose it or forced to give it up like what happened to my family.

Even though Therien won, Randy still has the moves, he's very quick and gave his son a run for the money, competing against a close family member is hard, I remember competing against my little sister, that was tough, I wanted her to win because she was young and I didn't want her to get discouraged, there's a 22 year age difference between my sister and I.

Men’s Grass Dance Much has been written about the Grass Dance. Borrowed from the Omaha tribe, perhaps in the 1860s, the dance is very popular. Dancer’s outfits feature a good deal of colorful fringe, replacing the grasses dancers originally tucked into their belts. Many dancers wear the hair roach, the crow-belt, and the eagle-bone whistle-originally emblems for the Omaha society. The basic step of the Grass Dance involves the ball of one foot being tapped on one beat and placed down flatly with the next, repeating the action on the opposite foot without missing a beat. Each time the foot is placed flatly on the ground, the weight is shifted to that foot. Dancers should keep their heads moving either up or down with the beat of the drum, nodding quickly, several times to each beat, or moving from side to side. The purpose of this action is to keep the roach crest feathers spinning. To keep the feathers moving constantly is the sign of a good dancer. Although the Grass Dance is a freestyle type of dancing, dancers must follow the changing beat of the drum and stop when the music does, with both feet on the ground.
