    God that would be terrifying to be 15 years old and being faced with the fact that your only surviving parent might die. I'd be scared out of my mind and beg for them to let me see my mum if she was in that condition.

    How many people can you think of would be happy to hear that there was an option that had the possibility of restoring function, but you were denied access to that option because it was risky? I know I would by far prefer taking that risk for that chance over being left knowing that there was a chance that wasn't even attempted.

  • @zilesis1

    @zilesis1

    Жыл бұрын

    probably all of the hodpials lawyers would be happy about it. wrongful death suits are very "quirky" so to speak. i this case, i don't think the kid would have the resources to sue, but if a rich person was faced with the same decision, chose the "restoring function" option then the patient died, there could be a lwasuit. the family member claiming the doctors gave them false-hope etc. they probably wouldn't win, but even the act of them filing a lawsuit would skyrocket the hospitals lawsuit insurance premiums which would have a cascading effect on staff salaries, the hospital's overall rating and the funding donations they receive so... yeah, the safer option probably would have made lots of people happy

    There's something called Gillick competency, which is when a child is assessed as being a mature minor, able to understand their medical/legal options and able to make independent choices about their care. This kid at 15 could well have been deemed a mature minor and able to make his own decisions, but whether that indicates his legal decision-making for a next of kin, Im not sure

  • @zilesis1

    @zilesis1

    Жыл бұрын

    @@ZosiaDabrowski i think that's a very narrow scope of decision making you're talking about. it's usually used in the context of custody i think. like, a minor who is deemed competent in the way you describe could make decisions on which parent they want to stay with in a divorce and/or if they want to go back to the custody of their parents if they got taken away, etc. not sure how many medical decision they can make, but 100% certain the decisions are limited to their own body. a person under 18 is not legally allowed to make medical decisions for other people, even their own family

    He is probaply one of the most sensible doctors we see here. His assesments are based on facts, statistics and the parameters given, the others are based on the hope that the dice lands on a 6 rather than 1 through 5 all of which would make the situation far worse. The demeanor could use some changing but I'd rather have someone blunt than someone that's not willing to stand their ground.

    He didn't rule out any hope he made a calculated risk/benefit analysis of the injury and available treatment options. Listen to what he said at 6:40 it would change the calculus meaning with the new finding the potential benefits of the laminectomy are far greater to the patient relative to the risk
