I think the argument "what do they even talk about?" is overused and used to justify someone's personal dislike for age gap relationships as if we don't have great interpersonal relationships at work with people decades older and younger than us. Now that I said that. What the fuck do they even talk about? lol

But the thing about "dying doing what you love," as people like to say to feel better about a tragic accident, is that they may love the activity, but when something goes catastrophically wrong and they are heading towards death, it's no longer something you love. I was a working general-aviation pilot and instructor, when this tragic event made the news. It surprised neither me nor my peers, because we’d been tracking the whole publicity stunt by then, and saw no good in promoting the myth of a child “pilot.” The media were lazy on the story, and if they’d bothered to feel the pulse of the aviation community at large, they’d have sensed great criticism. @@mizzmolly7649 --Thanks for the thoughtful response, and don’t beat yourself up about it. Very clearly, yours is a responsible mindset. Unfortunately, in the face of positive lessons learned by the mainstream media, social media have emerged as an often, poor and misleading source of information. In 2021, a KZreadr faked an airborne emergency, and crashed his aircraft on camera, just to gain clicks. The mainstream media sniffed out the hoax pretty quickly, but it took the social-media world much longer to come to a correct reckoning, during which time many in the blogosphere defended and even praised the idiot. Last December, another KZreadr, Jenny Blalock, lost her life in an aircraft crash. But this only followed months’ worth of posted videos that displayed her woeful piloting skills, and that worried many of us for literal safety. Critics in comments sections and elsewhere were immediately and frequently shouted down by subscribers and other supporters whose rationale, oddly, seemed to center on her popularity and the entertainment value of her videos, as if that equated to actual piloting skill.

This child was being pressed into a role that requires a level of maturity, skill, decision making and physical strength beyond the capabilities of many adults. Believe it or not, there is no minimum age for flight training in the USA. You must be at least 16 to fly solo. The reason there is no minimum age for flight training is because flying is actually easier than driving (the sky is largely empty space). I don't think there would be any harm in letting her fly around from time to time with her instructor. By the time she turned 16 she'd have considerable practical experience behind the yoke than most youngsters are equipped with. The issue, IMO, was her father's obsession with fame. What is unfair to children is bringing them into this world when you are not prepared to care for them and put their needs ahead of your own. The fact that you are concerned about how your age might impact a child, tells me that you would make an excellent father! Forty is not too old. Wisdom, patience and stability are far more important than youthful energy.

I would not have the energy to deal with babies or toddlers, all while having a full-time job. As a pilot, I have to say that this was an excellent analysis of a tragic crash. We in aviation knew that there was no significance to the flight. As Dr. Grande pointed out, you have to be sixteen to even have a student pilot's certificate, but that would negate the "youngest pilot" benefit. Taking off in the face of an approaching thunderstorm was extremely dumb - but we can only imagine the pressure that Joe Reid was under. Weather generally moves from west to east. Waiting until that thunderstorm passed would mean that that particular line of weather would then be blocking their path eastbound, causing a delay of a day...or more! A more seasoned pilot might have been able to tell Jessica's father, "No, we're not going." But the "power gradient" on that flight favored the father, even though he was not an actual pilot. Sad. Very, very sad.

I’m Kenny Dubroff, Lloyd’s grandson. By society’s standards, My grandpa was different. His wife is also different. This makes it easy to pass judgement, especially in the face of tragedy. Allow me to clarify a few things: First, I’ll start by saying I was 16 at the time of the accident. I don’t claim to know what went on in my grandpa’s head, or why he rushed the flight. What I can say for certain: 1. Because of the way she was raised, without traditional toys, being allowed to do things under supervision that are deemed dangerous to most (such as using sharp knives and cooking) - this also meant she was very mature for her age. I told people at the time that her and her brother were far more mature than I was and they were half my age. When they built things with tools, they absolutely experienced joy and pleasure as most kids would when they played with toys. 2. I had the pleasure of being in the plane while Jessica flew at Half Moon Bay. She took off, made a small loop and landed. During this flight, her instructor asked her several questions including where she would land if the plane were to experience a critical failure or they otherwise had an emergency that required immediate landing. After surveying her surroundings, she chose a nearby field that wasn’t near any houses and clear of a nearby wooded area. I’ve been a passenger in many commercial planes, small planes, and helicopters. I felt most at ease while she was at the helm. Her landing was the smoothest I’ve experienced - and many pilots will tell you it’s the landing that’s hardest to stick. 3. With my mom’s permission (who is close to society’s standards of a typical mom) my grandpa allowed me to have the experience of piloting a helicopter when I was around the same age as Jessica was when she started flying. It was under direction of an instructor and he did the take-off and landing. He allowed me to briefly take the controls. I loved it, but I was very scared and didn’t want to do it again. I told my grandpa this and it was never an issue. He didn’t pressure me to fly or talk about any grandiose plans. There was no hint of him trying to live through me - he just wanted me to have a unique experience and have a good time. Some things I believe: 1. My grandpa believed in letting his children live up to their full potential. Jessica absolutely loved to fly. I’ve never seen anyone as excited or absolutely joyful as her when she behind the controls of that plane. I don’t believe he pressured HER to fly. 2. I don’t recall who’s idea the trip was. I believe Jessica came up with the name for the voyage. She was thrilled to be participating in it. 3. This is obviously a tragedy that could have been avoided. I’ve never believed the plane should’ve taken off in the weather it did with the weight it was carrying. I don’t doubt excitement about the media buzz played a part in the decision to take off that day. I just want everyone to know that my grandpa didn’t have bad intentions and if he thought he was putting anyone’s life in jeopardy, he wouldn’t have allowed the plane to depart that day. Our family thought it was safe - getting into a car is more risky than getting into a plane on most days. At the time, the FAA put no age restriction on operating a plane with a qualified instructor at the helm. I also believe children should be allowed to experience all this world has to offer in a safe way. That includes playing with toys, and using tools.

Yeah, but they should be able to experience life at the appropriate ages and stages, not flying an airplane cross country at 7. Also, raising a child that way leaves them with no childhood at all, which is not good for them. My son had toys, he graduated with high honors and is now in doing well in college and in life. He takes care of himself. It’s not a crime to let a kid be a kid. That said, I am sorry for your loss.

I don't understand why her mother thinks toys are bad. Any psychologist will tell you that playing with toys is actually a form of developmental therapy for children. I also do not understand the desire to make them grow up quickly. Jessica had her whole life to learn how to perform other tasks. But you only get one chance at being a child. Nowadays there are adults who are regressing back to childhood habits of collecting toys, playing games etc. because they are trying to reclaim a childhood they feel they missed. Very common in the competitive dance and pageant worlds for example.

@@kennydubroff7772 If a child wants to be a Formula 1 Driver I would support it but I would not let a 7 year old behind the wheel of an actual Formula 1 car. I would give them books to support their interest. Ask for a tour or go see a race. I would find out if they can do a simulation of sorts. And if they are much older with a more developed brain with the true ability to consent, then I might look at lessons. IF they still are interested and it's not just an experimental faze as most kids go through. So if Jessica wanted to fly, there were ways to encourage that absolutely. But at seven years old she was not developmentally capable of consenting to the potential risks involved in such an activity. So I think and wish the actual flying part would have waited.

That 20-year-old Cessna Cardinal must have been really beat up. It was famous for having take-off and landing issues. It was under-powered and tended to "porpoise" while ascending. The company tried upping the power and initiated a voluntary (larger) horizontal stabilizer replacement program. This helped but by then its reputation was ruined so it was scrapped in 1978. So, that plane was just as tired and incompetent as the pilot.
