Archer and Shirou are literally the same person. Emiya Kiritsugu, one of the competitors of the 4th grail war, had the dream of saving the world - but he realized that dream was wrong when the grail started pulling some nonsense on him.... the final battle of the fourth grail war was so bad that it set the majority of fuyuki city on fire. Shirou was living in fuyuki with his family at that time when the city went up in flames. His family died in the fire, he wandered out into the streets and saw people dying while he walked through a blazing hellscape. Kiritsugu was looking frantically to save *just one person*, and eventually he found shirou, who had lain down and given up. Kiritsugu was so determined to save him, that he pulled the sheath of excalibur (the magical artifact he used to summon Saber into the 4th grail war to fight for him) out of himself (it was a major factor in how he won the war, as whoever holds the sheath of excalibur cannot die) and used magic to "put" the sheath into shirou. This fundamentally changed Shirou's being (aka what the metaphysics of nasuverse refers to as an origin, aka your place and role in the world), in a very convoluted sense Shirou was changed into a sword, because sword's go into sheaths and that is how his life was saved. In the metaphysical sense, he is a sword that happens to look like a person, and his magic is *swords*. Shirou saw how happy Kiritsugu was to save him, that he decided he wanted to save people too. Kiritsugu later adopted him at a hospital, which is when Shirou became Emiya Shirou. A short few years later, after only teaching a small amount of magic to Shirou, Emiya Kiritsugu dies. The fourth grail war starts when Emiya Shirou is around 17 or so, and he competes in it with Saber as his servant. This is where a timeline split occurs. In one timeline Shirou wins the war, but at great cost, with many of the people around him that he desired to save ending up dead - this is the archer timeline. He continues on with his life until at some point in time a nuclear powerplant is about to explode. He hastily makes a deal with the "Soul of Humanity" Alaya, to provide him with the ability to save everyone, in exchange for becoming a counter-guardian after his death (due to his unique magical abilities). Counter-Guardians are the souls of dead heroes, remembered for all eternity, who are called from their rest to kill threats to the planet earth (of which alaya makes up a portion of its soul) before they can intentionally or inadvertently destroy the planet. Emiya Shirou prevents the nuclear power plant from exploding, and goes on about his life trying to save people (often in war zones) until he is eventually captured and tried for war crimes, found guilty, then summarily executed by hanging. Thus he begins his *eternity* on the throne of heroes a place outside of time where heroes are summoned when the planet needs them to prevent its destruction. It turns out that the largest threat to Gaia (the soul of earth) is humanity... and preventing destruction often means ruthlessly murdering people. For an uncountable amount of time heroic spirit EMIYA, who only wanted to save people is used as an instrument of murder. He ends up adding some new stuff to his magic throughout all of these experiences however (the universe at large cannot distinguish him from swords, so his magic can create swords out of nothing which is normally very impossible, the only limitation is his mind - as creating powdered unicorn horn and crystallized glory is kind of hard to conceptualize). He see's his ideals as a wasteful sham, his service as a counter-guardian and heroic spirit a corruption of his ideals... but he has already pledged himself to an *eternity* of it. Heroic Spirit EMIYA for various reasons is the last "true hero" that humanity ever has, and as such has a few things tied to his own legend (which few people know). In the grail wars an artifact tied to a hero is needed to summon them, and because the Throne of Heroes exists outside of time, it is technically possible to summon one *from the future*... but it would be impossible unless you had an artifact. Part of EMIYA's legend is that his heart was healed from a stab by Gae Bolg, by a magical pendant owned my Tohsaka Rin, the only momento of her father... she leaves this pendant with Shirou, and he keeps it with him for the rest of his life... In the current timeline we're experiencing, Tohsaka rin had her fathers pendant on her when she tried to summon her servant. She recieved archer, who failed to identify himself (as he honestly didnt know, but he starts putting things together very quickly as his memories start to come back). Shirou gets 'killed', 'saved' and then some events proceed, he makes an alliance with Rin, but her servant rubs him wrong. Rin herself becomes rather frightened by her servant because he is hard to control and he even goes so far as to attack Shirou. Archer has started to construct the idea that "If a me from the future.... kills me from the past... me from the past cannot go on to become a 'hero' and make a deal with alaya... This could create a paradox. I *know* how alaya responds to paradoxes, she prevents them before they could happen, which would mean that I would be destroyed. I could escape having to murder people for all eternity!" This fight is a culmination of Archer and Shirou and their ideals clashing, it was an extremely high point in the Unlimited Blade Works storyline in the visual novel.

Syfa Dam, well said. Reading all of this is really sad and tragic for the person that only want to save lives. He wanted to basically escape the hell he has been in for eternity. This definitely goes deep into the debts of Shiro/ Archer that you can help but just feel bad for him

Some info that might clear up the confusion: Archer is future Shirou. Archer lost his way and despises the embodiment of Justice that he has become. All his life he wanted to save everyone but all he did was kill to save the majority. The cycle never ended as it was never possible to save everyone, resulting in this bitter never ending cycle where he just kept killing endlessly, trying to believe in his cause. This eventually broke him. In the end he was betrayed and hung. He believes he is a mistake and wants to kill Shirou to prevent himself from being born. Shirou on the other hand doesn't accept Archer as the ideal of Justice that he strives to become. The key difference here is that Archer's spirit was broken and he stopped believing in his ideals, whereas Shirou continues to struggle to become the ideal no matter the cost. As for Archer's ability - he's not actually summoning the weapons. He's creating them. Gilgamesh has his treasury, where he stores all the weapons in the world. Archer has his desolate world (unlimited blade works) where he stores every weapon he has seen and traced. That's why Archer is able to create weapons on the fly out of thin air, while Gilgamesh has to summon them via the gate (Golden portals), however, Gilgamesh has the original weapons and Archer creates fakes.

+keith kells :P also the world archer makes gives him full access to everything he has encountered like Rho Aias but if he attempters to trace or make weapons it is now much harder so the creations he threw and made when he fought was likely difficult, the fakes he makes are a rank or weaker than the originals and he can't create things like excalibur because it is a divine construct or to strong for him to make

Basically, Archer fights his past self, which is Emya Shirou. This fight is 55% talk and 45% battles. Because, this battles isn't just man vs man, it's more of a man vs. self. This is a fight for their ideals. If you want to dig deeper, watch the main series.

UBW is so underrated. It's actually amazing.

Archer is from the future, he is emiya shirou, to escape from that hell, he tries to kill his past self, but fails.

Ugh,it feels so annoyed that he just fucking blindly predict the plot,this is a battle between two types of thinking,not action. You won't understand what they are taking about and how their emotions are if you don't watch the whole series

Archer is shirou from the future. He was able to come back and fight in this trail war because of a pendant rin gave shirou when she saved him from dying by lancer.

Usually I wouldn't spoil these great anime, but since you asked, Shiro dream is to become a hero of justice, archer is the future shiro, he became a hero of justice, but in doing so he was betrayed, and he was hanged, and was left with nothing but regrets, that's why he wanted to change the way Shiro thinks so he doesn't end up on the same path... This is a major spoiler, but whatever you already watched the episode that explains all that. PS: If you plan to watch this anime, start with Fate Zero, it comes before Fate Stay Night, which will explain more about the man that saved Shiro ( the man you keep seeing in shiro's flashback.) Fate Stay night doesn't say much about him, so unless you watch the first anime you will be left with some unanswered questions.

I thought the visual language made it screamingly clear that something was flowing into shirou as a direct result of making blade to blade contact with archer.

To understand why Archer is so mad, is because he [SPOILERS] is a version of Shirou who ascended to the Throne of Heroes due to making a contract with Alaya, the Will of Humanity. That's the second worst mistake in his existence, the first being his decision to become an ally of justice (since it set him on his path to doom and misery). What's the price of the contract? Serving Alaya in the afterlife as a Counter Guardian. That means that he would be sumonned to a world (parallel worlds exist there, Zelretch proving that with the sheer level of bullshit he's capable of. Check the Second True Magic on Type-Moon wiki) and then wipe out completely the threat to humanity. Including the innocents, as they could spread the information that could cause a risk to humanity, ergo they get wiped out. Counter Guardian EMIYA has millenia of memories of slaughtering innocent people to save thousands of times more people. Obviously not the recipe for sanity. That's why he devised a plan; destroy the ideals of his past self and then kill him, thereby causing a strong enough paradox for reality to remove his existence. He tried this by getting sumonned as a Heroic Spirit into the 5th Grail War, as Counter Guardians are a subgroup of Heroic Spirits. His stats for a Servant (term for sumonned HS), so he makes up with a suicidal fighting style and Magecraft (which you must not confuse with Magic, as True Magic is fucking hax. I can make a post all for Magic explaining just how awesome it is). His fighting style consists of deliberately leaving holes in his stance, making his enemies aim for it. This leaves Archer with the advantage of knowing where a faster opponent will go for, making him able to react in time. Otherwise he wouldn't have been able to match Lancer, who's ridiculously quick. Regarding weapons, Shirou's soul embodies the concept of Sword, and his element is Sword, making any feat of Magecraft related to it have some extra oomph in it. He can also use other bladed weapons, but the effects are reduced. Naturally,Structurally Grasping a sword and reading its history and then being able to use the skills of any of its wielders. He can recreate them with Tracing, and advanced version of Projection Magecraft (thought of as useless due to shortcomings), but he's actually pulling the weapons from his Reality Marble, where any weapon he analyzed ends up, making the cost of Tracing really low as it's actually just pulling stuff out of his Reality Marble. Gilgamesh, however, gathered every treasure during his lifetime,including swords, ambrosia, weapons, freaking flight machines (Vimana,IIRC) etc. That's why, the culmination of his legend, his Noble Phantasm Gate of Babylon, is able to shoot weapons. This is hopelessly confusing; you would either have to make some questions for oje of your fans to answer or read the Visual Novel (which has 18+ scenes, a fair warning). Don't worry, you'll get it at one point. By the way, some of this I was told by other FSN fans via fanfiction, which may or may not make it wrong. I'll probably get the VN for Christmas, since I'm busy with school now. Good night!

Disclaimer aside, I'll get myself Fate/Stay Night, the visual novel for Christmas if I have the time. When watching Fate Zero and FSN, keep in mind that Gen Urobuchi wrote Fate Zero as a light novel, while FSN was done by Kinoko Nasu and his company, so Nasu might have written something that comes into conflict regarding the mechanics. Might being the key word.

*SPOILERS Shiro is a past self of Archer and Archer was summoned to the past. Archer didn't like the life he had so he decided to kill his past self. Everyone you've seen fight so far is a servent, a person of great renown like Hercules, to fight in the holy grail war. they all have classes assigned to them, hence archer, saber, berserker, caster, assassin, and lancer. Gilgamesh is an exceptionbecause he was a servent in the last grail war and didn't disappear. they all require a relic from their life in order to be summoned which is why shiro was able to heal, sabers scabbard was implanted in him and what it does is if close to saber, wounds will heal. your welcome.

Archer is a Shirou in future, he losed his afterlife peace to be hero of justice, he can't reborn, but was disapointed in humanity and his way of hero, because he wanted to save all lifes, not to kill, that why he wanted to kill his young version, he though that it last chance to stop himself to be a killer in hand of justice.

The real question posed by the hero 'Emiya' is whether an ideal should be judged by the end result or what's gained in the process. If you pursue an impossible ideal, one that you never achieve and fail miserably to achieve, is it even possible that ideal was correct in the first place? The obvious answer is no: we follow ideals in order to achieve them after all. But what if, by following that ideal and staying true to it, the world is a better place? Even if you fail, even if the ideal itself is so flawed it'll make you miserable in the end, it still might not be 'wrong'. Shirou's ideal is to save everyone. Be they enemy or friend, the person committing the crime or the victim suffering from it. He wants to save them all. But what if in order to save a town of people, you must kill a dictator? What if that's the only solution? This world doesn't allow that kind of ideal to exist, and in pursuing it Shirou inevitably will end up breaking it time and time again. It's an impossible dream, and Archer is the result: a shattered ideal consumed by violence and despair. But, just how many were saved because of Shirou's... Archer's efforts? How much a better place will the world become? More than that, just because his ideal is impossible, is it not worth pursuing regardless? The desire for everyone to be saved MUST be beautiful. It's the perfect ideal of a perfect world. Fate asks us these questions

It looked like Archer threw the fight at the end.

So, have you watched the show yet? If not, you really should. It has great action, but for a lot of the fights, it's the context that makes them great. Without knowing the story, without knowing the characters and why they fight, you're only barely scratching the surface of what the Fate series has to offer. This is even more true for the prequel, Fate/Zero.

In the Fate series there is really not many Bad people. The priest, Gilg and Caster. There is a worse evil in the world but it does not happen unless you do the final show Heavens feel. But they are all people with their own view and desires. They have opposing ideals and goals, so hard to quantify evil. Hell out of my last I can even say Caster is not totally evil.

Multiple worlds interpretation. Among all possible shirous, at least one becomes archer. Archer's ability is to paint over the external world with his internal world, which is a representation of his shitty fake and tool-like life. Like the weapons he is also just a tool to save by means of killing, but his world is empty and like his weapons he his entire existence is a copy of his dad's. The fight was ultimately a battle of ideals and the first one to give up loses. Shirou's determination rekindled archer's determination sorta, and you can see that in the internal world at the last scene. Archer's still standing cus that stab didn't even bother him. He didn't lose a fight, he surrendered and got stabbed as a symbol of loss. Shirou burned out and fell as soon as it was over.

A suicidal kid trying to kill himself that's all this fight about.

Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works is the second season of this serie. You should watch Fate Zero first, which is the first season of this serie. They got some pretty bad ass fight scene in Fate Zero too, and the story is really good. The cool thing about this serie is that there are seven class of servants. Saber, Archer, Lancer, Assassin, Berserker, Caster and Rider. There are new characters in each season for each class of servants except for Saber. Anyway, my main point is that this anime effing epic!!! Start with Fate Zero and then watch Fate Stay Night, which will properly help you understand more of the story.

it is not the second season..........in fact Ufotable still has not finished his work with Fate/stay night, since UBW is the second route, and we're still waiting for Heaven's Feel (final route), which was announced years ago

Honestly I'm okay with these kind of reactions, but please do them with context in mind. I don't understand the appeal of ruining the experience of watching a series from the beginning to then miss all reference a scene might make. Watch a series, record yourself as you watch it. Don't spoil yourself by half-assedly watching a pivotal scene out of context. The only reason I watch this video of yours is that it was the only one with the full 25 minute fight in japanese with eng subs.
