Creator's comments about this ending: "Positioning of the ending This ending was added for the Xbox version. We had the concept that the Crimson Butterfly ending was the best bad ending and the Hellish Abyss ending was the worst happy ending, but this was planned to be the best happy ending. We'd had an idea for this for the PS2 version as well, but it would have taken so long so the idea was dropped. I was also afraid that as a horror game ending it might wrap things up too neatly. However, since having the Promise ending makes the other endings more prominent, it's an important ending. Becoming a butterfly by joining hands The Promise ending shows more clearly that Mio becomes possessed by Yae when she approaches her from behind in the introduction. It's an answer to Itsuki calling Mio Yae when he sees her. Mio's role is to carry Yae as far as the Hellish Abyss where Sae awaits. The image of letting go and taking of hands is an image repeated several times in the game. Letting go in the crowd at the festival, letting go on the way home... And by taking their hand again, the separated twins' hearts can truly become one, and they turn into a crimson butterfly. In that sense, the crimson butterfly that is born in the Promise ending comes from a different ritual from the one in the Crimson Butterfly ending. The scene at the very end with Mio and Mayu holding hands has the same symmetry as Yae and Sae, and makes Mio and Mayu also look like a butterfly. Meaning of the "Promise" title "Perhaps everyone relives the past by making countless promises to others throughout their lives." - Julusmole (From "The Heart of Thomas" by Moto Hagio) The ending name of "promise" was taken from this line. The world of the Zero series is a world in which nothing is certain, where there is no villain, but rather losing the one you love, the breakdown of what you believed in, being wounded by disagreements, or vanishing without a trace, no one knowing about you... (I suppose perhaps it's like the real world...) Even if there's something you think strongly, alone it's either a creed or a delusion. However, if perhaps there are two people who share the thought, it becomes a promise, does it not? In a nihilistic world, as far as they are concerned, the promise is the only certain thing. As long as the other person in the promise believes this, it won't disappear. Even if you have lost so many things and are in such despair that you would choose to end your own life, if you have a promise to rely on you can recover. By remembering the promise, you can go on without taking that final step. If you have a promise, it becomes your reason for living, and I thought about that as I created the ending. "We always promised that we would be together forever." Their promise that appears many times in the game. This youthful promise may have been shaken and broken, but it didn't disappear. Through the events of Minakami Village, it becomes stronger when they confirm it to each other. After this ending, they are able to move on together due to their belief of this promise." @@glanni I love this ending, this is my favorite one (and I was so sad when I got the normal ending first). I like to think this is the conclusion of the game even though it's not the canon one. However, you're wrong about the song: the lyrics really fit the Normal ending. It's like a Goodbye letter from Mayu to Mio. It was written to fit this ending in which Mio strangles Mayu.

Fatal Frame 2 :Crimson Butterfly would make a great film if they made it into one. As long as has the good ending.

She's been possessed since the beginning of the game. It isn't until the end when the ritual is needed to save the village that Yae overshadows Mio and goes through with the ceremony. In the Promise Ending, Mio (Yae) makes it to the Abyss before the ritual was to take place and thus breaks the time loop that the village has been in all those years. In doing so they become aware of the fact that they are already dead and that they can become one without forcing that burden on either Yae or Mio. They both thank Mio and Mayu for allowing them to finally fulfill their promise and move on in peace. In the Crimson Butterfly ending despite Yae and Sae being in control it is Mio and Mayu who become one which is why you hear Mayu thank Mio instead of Yae and Sae. Mayu has been struggling against the idea of becoming one by trusting Mio and by the point of the ending she feels there's only one way for them to keep their promise which is by doing the ceremony and becoming one. None of the villagers know that they are dead in the Crimson Butterfly ending because Mio (Yae) make it back at the time Yae was supposed to make it back to begin with. In Promise Mayu finds out that Yae had been trying to come back to Sae all this time and only couldn't because of the barrier to the village. This combined with Mio saving her from falling into the abyss confirms to Mayu the sincerity of both Mio and Yae's love for their respective twins and that neither one ever had nor ever will abandon the other to live a life without them in it. In the Abyss Ending Mio (Yae) doesn't make it back till after the ritual was supposed to take place (With the remake adding in new scenes that happen to cause the delay in the first place) and Sae becomes vengeful because of it. Because of making it back to the Abyss at the time when Sae was being sacrificed the malice inside of Sae overcomes her which causes her to attack Mio (Yae) instead of urging her to continue the ritual.

Finally a happy ending!!! The other endings (specially the normal one) were totally sad!!! Love this ending

I love Mio so much. She's a wonderful character and a lovable and identifiable person. I wish this ending was canon although I do love 3 very much and it wouldn't have happened if it was canon.

love this ending plus I got them as a trophy in Super Smash Bros For WiiU but their design is based on the remake for the wii.

Kureha Shrine. Mio finds it by checking the statues to the left of the lone pinwheel. After obtaining it, snap a picture of Masumi's ghost the statue checker. Chapter 2 step 4. Village Report 2 is obtained by searching the well in front of the Tsuchihara Jailhouse. After picking it up snap a picture of Masumi's Ghost the Wall Checker. Chapter 2 step 5. Village Report 3 is found by checking the door of the Kureha Shrine. Masumi's Ghost the Man at shrine will appear only if Mio does not open

I found out how you can get the Bloody Ring Sidequest and the extended Masumi Strangling Miyako Scene. Chapter 2 step 1. Take a picture of Miyako's ghost standing in the back room of the Osaka House Chapter 2 step 2. Pick up Documents where she is standing. These Documents are are the first paragraphs of Village Reports 1 through 4, each one names a place in the lost village that Masumi investigated. Chapter 2 step 3. Village Report 1 can be found at the base of the stairs leading to the

Happy Endings fit in anything. Horror just tends to usually have sad endings. This ending is the best and I wish it was the canon ending.

@pkstarstorm1up Not gayness as in "oh, they are lesbians", of course I know they're not gay. Gayness as in "aw, so cute", but still not in a bad way. I played this 6 or 7 times, I know they are not lesbians lol I meant that, despite of the happy ending (which does not fit a survival horror game), this is the best ending among the four of them.

@quyanhatula Chapter 5 step 1. Assuming Mio has the Bloody Ring, a scene which gives more detail about the fates of Masumi and Miyako will play upon entering the back room of the Oasaka House. Mio may then pick up Masumi's Bloody Memo and Sard. Afterwards the ghosts of Masumi and Miyako Unrest in Peace and the Wanderer will attack. Final step. Upon completion of the battle Mio adds the memo Miyako's end to her notes. I hope this helped and I hope you will upload the scene in HD please!:D

While I think the canon ending is also very...faithful to the franchise, I personally think is this the absolute BEST ending in the whole game, and it really depresses me that this isn't canon. Why do some games have to put such excellent endings in some games and then make them non-canon? Really, if someone can somehow...somehow theorize that this is a canon ending, I'll give them an e-hug.

+Overlord Vegeta the crimsion butterfly ending is the original ending cauz in fatal frame 3 mio tells that because of her mayu went away for which mio wents into the manor of sleep and kei tries to protect her.

I'm gonna be the minority opinion and say that the ending of the remake is actually better done. The voice acting, the music, and the dialog is a lot better in the Wii version than it is here. "I will be always be there to hold your hand" is much better than "I will never let you go again." And while Chou is a good song, Kurenai fits this ending much more. Chou is good for the original ending (and i'd argue Kurenai is as well), but for this it doesn't work in my opinion.

This should be the canon ending but NOOOOO!! They had to make Mio a killer... This is a beautiful ending
