Blakes’s videos are starting to be my favourites. Great skills, good topics and oozes fun. I can tell by the sound of the fat tires you where running them way too hard. No more than 8-10 PSI for this kind of terrain. No wonder you had no grip. And youshould def run it tubeless. I am 100% sure the test would yield a diff result if repeated withcorrect tire pressure. Great to see some hardtails in action either way. +Bikes are also very cool anyway.

When I converted to carbon wheels and tubeless, it was so much faster. I can also attest to tire pressure being above 15psi causes it to be more bouncy on rough terrain. Also, when the trail is wet, that is when the fat bike truly shines. I feel much more slippage and sketchy on my 29er MTB when the trail is even slightly wet.

@Daniel Paul Watts Hey mate, in my honest opinion, no. But it really depends, if you don't have a massive amount of money to spend on a fancy trail bike, a budget fat bike would provide some "suspension" and a more comfortable ride. On the other hand, if you don't get a top level fattie - then it's gonna be really heavy usually. But if your country gets a lot of snow in the winter, then it might be worth considering. I would probably go for a plus bike if I were you. Hope I helped you a bit!

I was thinking the same thing - my Plus bike has 3" tyres (not 2.8" which some seem to round up to 3"), I think to qualify as Plus the tyres really need to be 2.8" minimum, although the rest of the bike might be a Plus on account of boosted wheels and geometry, if it's got normal tyres on (like 2.4s) is it still a Plus bike? Dunno!

A plus bike is classified as tyres 2.6 inches or wider anything smaller is not a plus sized tyre.
My XC (Forrest Racer) is equipped with 26x2.4, witch was HUGE at the time of building. I recently got a Fatbike with 26x4.8 and that is somewhat slower but waaaaayy more fun to ride - so for recreation and exercise I would choose the Fatbike any day. Would love to see a 29x3 build Plus bike in the mix.
I am a very casual, novice MTBer and my only off-road bike is a fat bike (Pugsley SpecOps). It perfectly fits your assessment of the fat bike. Great uphill traction but it feels cumbersome when you want to maneuver in tight situations. Being inexperienced it also makes up for my flaws on trail. I don't worry about big rocks, loose gravel, roots, etc. because the tires just don't care. You adequately sum up the joy of owning a fat bike every time you say "and now the fat bike!". You smile, growl and love it for the sheer happiness is brings you.
My mountain bike life changed completely when I purchased my Kona big Honzo. It’s 27.5 * 2.8. My wife has a specialized Ruze. It’s 27.5 * 3.0. Absolutely love riding around whether it’s the mountain or in the city or on a simple trail my wife and I have more confidence than ever.
Fat bike because it’s my only trail bike, and I can ride it in the snow. Another great video Blake!

Kuba Gajda With the tall side wall of the 4” tire and volume, I have never had an issue bottoming out. At least not yet.:)

Love the video, I have an On One 27.5 X3.0 and I am really enjoying it. This is my first mountain bike and these videos are great for building my knowledge.
Having too much pressure can make or break the ride of a fat bike with those huge fat tires. Hearing you mention "bounciness" makes me think the fat bike tire pressures were set a little on the high side for this video. Anyways, I enjoy seeing the fat bike coverage from you guys! Those things are practically a way of life for some people in AK. =)

It's exactly the opposite. The more air there is the harder the tire. When fat tires have less air they become VERY bouncy, like almost enough to make you motion sick. I know this because I have a fat bike. If you keep it inflated a bit under the max (which is really low on fat tires) it seems to be a good mix and even adds a little bit of shock absorption, of course it slows you down a lot too.

Couldn't agree more - I have a fat bike and the grip really comes alive at 8 to 12 psi, anything more and you get what Blake is experiencing on the bumps.

This is true. At 10-12psi is perfect on my 26x 4” tires on trails. Under 8 they get kinda bouncy. Makes sense there’s a lot of spring but no rebound control. Now on the beach 5-6psi is right around perfect. Haven’t had the guts to go lower, fearing my tubes

And if you use good Tyre and go Tubeless it transforms a Fatbike in a grip machine. Schwalbe JJ is the worst for non Asphalt road only low rolling resistance but a lot of punctures. I using Vee Tire Snow Avalanche 4.8, rolls good and has a lot more grip than Schwalbe JJ

I have driven over 1100 miles (1800 Km) all kind of terrain mostly trails that is full of roots and twigs with 26x4.8 Schwalbe JJ including inner tube and zero puncture so far.
Do the same tests in more sandy conditions
That video was awesome! It would be so awesome if you guys could make a plus tire vs standard tire video so we can sorta have some context! GMBN’s content is fantastic!

You guys have the best trails to ride, those big doubles and berms look so nice
I like and own a fatbike. I prefer the fatbike because It approaches and hammers trials correctly, making a ride like a float down the river on the faster moving current. It is much easier to ride up hills because the pushing youself on lower gears makes it easier to balance with 5 inch tires than needing to bail because you got stuck on a plus size bike. Plus size is more speed but not my style of mtb fun

You are so full of it. I own a fat bike and they are incredibly difficult to pedal uphill. Way more friction, way more weight. They are slower downhill too, bigger width means way more friction.

Best combination is a beautiful hardtail with 27,5+ tire rear for a good traction en comfort and Twenty niner front for good rolling speed.👍👍💪

Komodo Expert 26+ Tires actually measure out to 28ers. Last year on my Gt Zaskar usually was in the back. This Year I'm waiting on them👍

I rode both a fat and a plus when I was test riding for my new bike. I had to go with the Plus (running 2.8 now). Felt better to me and I can go up to 3 inch tires. Probably go 3 inch and tubeless for my next tire setup. Been loving the Plus; does everything I want it to do.
Jumbo Jim’s running at high pressures to prevent flats? No wonder he had problems with the fat bike.

Thats what I thought too. I run my 4.8"JJs at 0,45bar/6.5psi (front) and 0,75bar/11,5psi(rear) and I'm heavy. Punctures are very improbable (never had one) becuse the fat tire will just suck up the edge of a rock. I agree that those clownshoes won't dig into the ground but float above. Hey - thats what they are build for. Surf the terrain and have fun.

I agree , I like both. I own a surly pugsley for snow and winter riding . Cannondale Habit 27.5” for the rest of the year on singletrack and gravel which is tight and lots of climbing .

Blake, I’m loving your videos! Keep it up! I have a Wozo fattie and love it: it ridiculous fun! So different than my usual enduro bike. I have no doubt that regular and plus tires are more versatile and quicker on average, but the fat tires are so fun and run surprisingly quick trail times . I didn’t realize the sound is so much part of the fun until you mentioned it! My friends giggle as I jump and bounce my way down the trails. Crazy laughs! Next fall and winter get your hands on some studded Wrathchild 4.8” tires. They have insane grip but roll pretty darn good. The bring the grip, confidence and grin rating to a new level!!!

Just bought a Santa Cruz Bronson v3 in 27.5+ 2.6" tires and I love it. Gives me more confidence in the turns. My buddy has 29r and says he cant keep up because of how fast im taking turns

Blake really needs to convert the fatbike to tubeless! It completely changed the feel of mine. Way less roational weight and more grip because you can ride lower pressures.

Jlvg Garcia it took me hours and every trick in the book to get my tire off when I converted so if I ever flatted on the trail I'd be walking home for sure. Possibly through miles of snow lol. Tubeless is the way to go!

I'm running Trucker's Creme in fat bike tubes and, when you get that pressure way down there, it is a different beast! The "bouncy/floaty-ness" goes away and it grips the corners like your riding a Warg through the Fangorn Forest!!! It's addictive... so much so that I've just (finally) gotten a replacement for the one that was stolen way back in September.
Is it just me or does the fat bike make an awful racket when doing anything? Something is rattling around like a beast!

I think Blake ditched it prematurely. I've gotten jammed up on a technical climb on my plus bike and it's either the back wheel suddenly slipping or the back tire getting hung up on a rock and stalling momentum.

The rattle is the internal cable, just need to pull the cable tight from the front end to eliminate it like I did with my canyon dude 👍

2.6 is a plus? especially talking about Continental which may lie for 0.1-0.2 inch about its sizing. what's its actual width on rim? and inner rim diameter.

Anton Blaschuk True. I'm not sure but I think rim width is the first consideration determining whether its a plus bike. And not the TIRE width, since the rim shape changes the tire profile so much. But tire makers should indicate a rim width that would give you the indicated tire width.... maybe some already do. Idk

@@Dude-Smellmyhelmet Plus bikes are made assuming you're using a standard plus sized rim width which are mounted with 2.8 or 3 inch tires and when mounted on plus sized rims effectively come out somewhere close to 2.8 to 3.

Well he explained why he was running the higher pressure, to avoid punctures when running over gardens and stuff, because the fat bike is susceptible to that he said. I suppose that was just the kind of riding he was doing on this day.

Yeah but then he kept complaining about not getting enough grip, so maybe his pressure was *not* appropriate for the type of riding...
Don't forget to do a Beach test for the Fat Tire also can be used as a floatation device in case you fall into the ocean!

Blake, full suspension fatbike...game changer! I ride my All Mountain mtb still, but my fully fatty is my go to most of the time.

Awesome video!!!! That plus bike needs a lube, mate. ;) As a fellow 27.5+ owner (3" in the front, 2.8" in the rear) I can say I'm in love with the setup. I'd say 2.8" is probably the best compromise size for trails... if there's going to be a lot of paved runs in between, perhaps 2.6" tires would be optimal.
Before my first fat-bike ride i was so skeptic and biased ... now i own one .

You don't need to turn in the air To get better grip on the fat bike lower the pressure. At lower pressures the fat tires deform around the rocks so punctures are less of a issue on that fat tire than they are on the plus.
Another fun video, but here in the US, a 2.6 tire is considered a WideTrail tire, and 2.8's start the plus size, my Pivot Mach 5.5 came with 2.6's, Chris Cocalis say's it's definitely not a plus bike. Just sharing some info, keep cranking out those fun videos, you guys there at GMBN rock!

After riding everything over a great many years, I am now officially sold on the 26+ tires, which have the OD of a 650b, but has the volume of the 650b+. I implore you to give them a go, specially now that Maxxis is making the DHF/DHR tires in 26x2.8.
If youre bouncing everywhere on the fat bike it’s just that pressure is not right If you looking for times fat bikes are not the deal, for a safe and comfy ride it’s your bike

Plus Bike with 2.8" or 70 mm wide Tubeless Schwalbe Rocket Ron's fast rolling with high shoulders for more cornering grip than Racing Ray's and less resistance lighter weight than Nobby Nic. Since snow is getting less and less with the climate warming up, and before reaching the single track routes I have to overcome some serious distance on tarmac before and ater the fun, fatter tires than 3.0" I won't need most time of the year. Also I like the ability to put 29-er wheels in the 27.5 Plus MTB frame. Great Video You can cast the energy through the camera Blake.

Love the fatty, took my specialized fatty, manitou front shocks, maxxis tires down "the whole enchilada" Moab Utah, great ride,zero issues! Can't wait to do it again!
Thanks for putting this vid together. Got my first FB last week and can't get off it. Hindsight, If I had to get only one I would definitely go plus and not look back, but I hunt and there is NOTHING close to what the FB can traverse especially off piste. I'm going to buy the wife a plus bike this summer, probably 27.5 for control. Does anyone have a strong argument for putting her on a 29plus over a 27.5?

I am in Canada and just had my first winter with a fat bike. I was planning to leave Canada for a warmer climate but winter on the fat bike has been so great that I could not imagine missing our winter now. I am extremely sad now that the ice and snow is melting. I have been on riding on ice and snow covered single track that trailforks has as double black in the summer. I am going slowly but the climbing grip that Blake talked about meant that I was able to climb snow covered sections on my fat bike better than I did in the summer on my regular MTB. I never thought I would ride in the winter but I now consider it my main riding season.
We need an update to this with 29er+ vs mullet bike.

can you do a video on 29in 2.8 diameter tire trek stache 5?
For a proper comparison you need 1) the same geometry between the fat and plus; 2) how about also sticking a 2.8" - 3.0" plus tire in between the 2.6" and 3.8"/4.0"/4.5"/4.8" tires... and obviously with equivalent tread patterns. I’ve been riding and racing fatbikes since 2011 and am convinced that the 2.8" - 3.0" plus size will be the sweet spot between fatbikes and “normal” bikes.
Definitely agree with the other posters, air down those fat tires a lil bit, it'll change your downhill time and the handling. Also, great video!

I find I'm always wrestling with big volume tyre bikes. Trying to fight them onto the line I want to be on rather than the one they've bounced me on to, usually towards something which I don't want to interact with. I find 2.35/2.25 get me up to where I want to ride easily enough and I can be more in control on the way back down. Especially on muddy rocky terrain which is my usual ride. Maybe I'm just stuck in the mud?

The First MTB that i took on a trail ever was a FAT bike HT (Rented) because we wanted to try something new. The day before that was raining really hard that made some part of the trail soft yet hard enough for someone to donate some skin. Ever since that day, i am hook to MTB. I have ask around Pros and friends to know which bike is good for Under $1500, they all agreed that Trek Roscoe 9 is the way to go. So, How is the transition from Fat Bike to 2.8 Plus tires for a Beginner?

What size rims on the plus bike? Can you fit a 2.6 tire on a 40mm rim?
What is the air pressure set on the tires? They look real hard and bounce around a lot. I get a much better ride with my 29+ at 12 - 15 psi than at 20 psi.
What tire pressure were you running on the fatty? My summer pressure is usually around 9.5R and 9F and I’ve never had a cut or puncture, though I’m not hitting big jumps.
I've never ridden a fat bike but I gotta say I do LOOVE me these 2.6'" wide 29ers on my scott genius. Then again maybe I bit too much as I am thinking of swapping the 2.6" wide nobby nics for maybe a set of 2.5"wide maxxis combo, Maybe Ardent rear and HRII up front?
