Fasting Vs. Cutting Calories? (The scientific advantage) | Jason Fung

Why intermittent fasting is much more effective for weight loss than simple calorie restriction. Fasting allows insulin to fall which allows the body to use its stores of body fat for energy, where simple cutting of calories may or may not do so. Just cutting calories does not fix the hormonal changes of obesity. Check out my blog at / drjasonfung

Dr. Fung, what is your opinion on BCAA supplements like the powdered version whilst fasting for 72hrs? They claim these enhance the production of ketones by making your liver learn how to produce ketones on a low-carb diet etc or get you into ketosis quicker when fasting. Your help on this is much appricieated.

It really is. We've been trained since childhood to constantly snack. Food is EVERYWHERE. That's why a lot of people find it easier to start with 12/12, then push it out to 16/8 and stick to that for a while. Then push it out to 18/6, 20/4, omad etc. Hey, congrats on the loss so far. You must be feeling amazing! It cant have been easy, so high five!

I've been doing Intermittent Fasting for over 1 year now. I started with 10 hours a day, then 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 hours. I now eat for 2 hours a day, and it eventually turned into a OMAD (one meal a day) pretty fast. I was big, 320 lbs. After adapting the OMAD tactic I saved myself from an early death. It also came with tons of other great things. I saved money and time. Today I am 220 lbs, and I'm very happy with that. I am 6'4, so 220 lbs is fine. I no longer have cravings, my back problems disappeared and I felt so incredibly good. I didn't really restrict my food, I ate what I wanted basically, but only ONCE per day. If I wanted to make a burger, I made a burger, if I wanted to eat a fat juicy steak, I ate it. I literally had no problem losing weight if I just stuck to the fasting/eating window. (Of course, you shouldn't be consuming a 3000 calorie pizza everyday, but you get my point) One more thing, people that say that you are starving yourself and that you will develop eating disorders are wrong. They are jealous, and they lack the discipline to do what you do. Don't let them poison your mind. The human body is a fantastic machine, you will survive. Challenge yourself. Goodluck everyone!

Hi Doctor Fung and thank you guys for your enlightening and encouraging comments. Doctor, I am a Nigerian. I am 48 years old. I weighed 88 kg and a height of 5.3 ft. I came across your videos on reversing diabetes and intermittent fasting about six months ago. It was a perfect timing as at that time I was just diagnosed with diabetes. Since then, I have been practicing intermittent fasting with low carb diet. It's pretty hard for me because all my life I have eaten majorly carb diets. I found ways of improvising following your guidelines. Today, I weigh 72.4kg. I eat my last meal at 4pm and breakfast at between 9 and 10 am and I take averagely 8000 steps per day. My wife and colleagues are complaining about my wait loss. I am happy with it though but I need to look fresh instead of my present 'dry look' what can I do to stabilize my wait loss and look fresh?😃 Thank you.

One thing I realised after losing 50kg/100lbs in 5 months doing water fasting I realised that new goals don’t deliver new results, a new lifestyle does. This is a process not an outcome. For this reason, all of your energy should go into building better habits. Not chasing better results.

Then when I did the 72hrs fast I realized I didn't actually need food as much. I am currently 101KG and 4 weeks ago I was at 107KG. I will say, it's ok to fail. If the urge gets the better of you don't be discouraged and let your body have what it wants. Then start again. I did this for a while, with so much up's and downs and eventually, especially after doing 3 days fast, it just seem to re set your body, it's amazing what the longer fasts do! But start of slowly and build yourself up. Good luck and wishing you the best!

David, for me you say the magic words, “this is sustainable”. I also have been doing intermittent fasting. Usually somewhere between 20 and 22 hours. Low carb, keto also. The weight is coming off. Not fast but not slow. It’s just coming off. I don’t weigh myself but my clothes size goes down. Yes I have a goal, size 8-10 but more importantly I think I can keep this as a way of life. It seems to me that most people have a goal of a certain weight/size and then have a fantasy of going back to an old way of eating. An old lifestyle. For me that is not a possibility and the way I have been eating for about 10 months now seems as you say sustainable for a lifetime of being healthy.

As an RN, I thank you for trying to educate others on the subject. It can help so many people reverse their poor health and get their life back. I do my part, but people around me are quick to defend their high carb lifestyle, because keto or IF is unhealthy and therefore bad for you, yadayada! I've lost 42 pounds, yet people have a hard time understanding they CAN live without carbs like I have, to get to this point. My best friend needs to lose 20 pounds and insists calories in, calories out works, because she can't and won't give up sugar in her coffee (and snacking that she won't admit to). For months she's been complaining and trying to lose weight, yet no weightloss, in fact she probably gained 5 more pounds. In the meantime, I've been steadily losing weight and she won't acknowledge she is on the wrong path and is gaining weight in the process. She is perimenopausal and losing the fight with hormones, cortisol, and sugar! I'm hoping to convert her after the holidays.🤷‍♀️

I basically do one meal a day (dinner) pattern (22 hrs fasting) everyday. I don't feel hungry at all during my fasting, I can even do longer fasting until feeling real hunger. I've also changed my diet from normal to low carb after watching your video. It's hard at first to cut the carbs (carb addiction like you said XD), but I'm starting to get use to it. My father was diagnosed as pre-diabetes and he's reversing it well also by skipping breakfast. I feel like I gain the control of my body and I feel really good by this lifestyle changing. Today, I weigh 10st 10lb after doing 14-16 hours of IF a day. I’m planning to get down to 9st 10lbs which will be my optimal weight for my height. The weight loss through IF has encouraged me to get fit, do more exercise, boosted my mental clarity, helped my digestion, given me better sleep, reduced my knee pain and given me a new lease of life at the age of 52. Once I achieve my ideal weight, I intend to use IF for 12-14 hours a day with increase my calories to maintain my weight. Even if I do put on weight because I might relax myself on holiday or at a wedding or party, that’s ok because I now have a magic formula to get me back into a vibrational vortex to stay slim, trim and fit.🙏🙏

Thank you Dr. Jason Fung. I do fasting everyday atleast 16 hours sometimes longer than that. I've tried 20 , 21 , 24 hours fast 3 days in a row , I never felt hungry , I never felt weak . I felt more energetic even if I have heart disease and severe pulmonary hypertension. I avoid eating processed foods, sugar, and high carbs. Been doing this for almost one year now.

Thank you so much for this information! It makes so much sense why my partner lost so much weight so fast!
