FASTEST WAY TO PREP METAL FOR PRIMER

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The black paint has been stripped with a 8" DA using 40 grit now we will hit it with 80 grit. The 80 grit will polish the scratches out and also prep the metal for primer adhesion 🔥 www.hiltzautoco.com

I love the way you teach.I learned a lot as a kid just by watching (my dad was a diesel mechanic) By watching I could see how it is done and why.The way you do it and your explanation's sure make it a joy to learn. You always have a positive outlook and that makes it all worthwhile for me.As always Jolene does great camera work.Doug is one lucky guy to have you both as friend's.I think Jim will be happy to see what you do with the bike overtime.Always stay true to yourself. We love you for it.

You are correct about taking 80 and smoothing out the 40 grit scratches as 80 is the perfect grit for bare metal needing sealer/primer. The rough surface of metal allows the primer/sealer to stick like glue. But you will to rough up the sealer or epoxy before priming. Unless you just shot it less than 24 hours ago. And you need several heavy coats of primer to create a surface you can guide coat and block out. I always use an epoxy primer for the raw metal. once you seal the metal surface then cover that with more basic build up primer coats. That way you have something to block down. If you use a different color epoxy like white or black, except on this black car, you will then know if and when you go through the epoxy primer. If you are sanding through several coats of primer and you hit metal it usually means you already have a high spot. So you would have to layer a whole new layer of primer in that area in order to block it back down and make things really smooth and straight. Sometimes the colors in epoxy and resurfacing primers are just different grays so it’s easy enough to see the different surfaces you’ve layed down. Great job on helping everyone figure this stuff out. My hopes are you will do a bit more editing work on these videos and create some of the boring repetition work in time lapse or fast forward it. During those times you can edit in your information you want to convey by recording as you watch the sections or episode pieces you've already recorded. You just have to remember to be silent while filming those sections. Voice over these sections and it becomes a much better tutorial . Keep em coming!

Im currently prepping my '96 f350 pwrstrk for auto body from the rust, as well as new paint. I have numerous replacement parts: new cab floor panels, rockers, cab corners. And also some older, solid body parts, from a '97 i purchased for 2nds of all salvageable things. I will be watching more and more of your vids. I appreciate the talent and quality of the work performed. Im a stone mason by trade, but have an obsession with re-building my truck I've owned for over 20 yrs. Im in Massachusetts. Frame is solid, for we restored that, and put a 4" lift suspension from Skyjacker back in 2014. So glad I did cuz the truck would probly be worthless without it today. Cheers, man. Real nice detail and thank you. 🤙

The best way I have found to strip is to use Citrastip it is made from orange citric acid. I apply a thick coat and cover with thin plastic overnight and can scrape with a razor blade. It is non caustic and not poisonous, but it softens paint, and bondo to a milky paste. It does take time to work a section but I am very pleased with the result.

Yes I'm harping again and I will keep on harping, you are not invincible, without a mask you will eventually plug your lungs with all the crap kicked up by power sanding. You will eventually go deaf with high pitched sound created by that same power sanding. I spent 20 years in the USAF working on radar, electronics create heat, the heat is taken away by cabinet blowers that are loud, they have to move a lot of air. A good percent of those 20 yrs. I worked on hydraulic antenna drive systems that scream like a banshee and being on the transmitter deck directly below the antenna deck you got a double whammy. I now wear hearing aids to understand what are saying to me because of those loud cab. fans and screaming antenna drives. So I repeat you and Jolene both need masks and hearing protection when in the shop so you can live a long and happy life together.

The mask thing although prevents harm is whatever. I’m tired of telling people to wear a mask. I’ve seen guys get sick after a week of breathing demo dust, plaster etc, and I’ve seen my grandfather grind asbestos off of boilers to where there was white clouds 40 feet surrounding him and he lived to 99. I will however agree with you with the hearing. No one is immune to hearing damage. My hearing got pretty bad from three deployments to Afghan. When I came back home I continued running heavy equipment and never wore ear plugs because I figured it won’t get worse. Hearing damage doesn’t stop because of exsisting damage. Thanks for your service!!

One thing I learned at an early age is wear a mask, if you want to live longer and not go through lung cancer or and other respiratory issues. Think about it.....all that debris ends up on the ground and you breathing in a small percentage of what’s on the ground.

Agree, & there’s no soft edge masking around the doors, hood or trunk. The primer is going to creep through the gaps & look & feel like black sandpaper. Definitely not the way to get the best results.

I am going to add to the comments about wearing a mask. It is your life and you live it the way you want. With that said, a very good friend of mine recently ended up in the hospital. He is/was a master welder for the last 35 years. He breathed in the dust, paint and metal debris over those 35+ years. He was rushed to the hospital and died twice on the table, but, they got him back. Diagnosis was crap/metal in his lungs. When I talked with him, he said, "I wish I could go back to my 20-year old self and tell him to wear breathing protection". He can't work any more and has retired. He can't do what he loves (welding) and what he is so good at. The last point and it is your point to a degree.... the reason for you series and TV shows while entertainment, is also an outlet for teaching and mentoring. Getting people young and old to get out and try something different. As a teacher/mentor, you need or should lead by example. There are young people out there looking at what you do and some are thinking, yeah, this would be a cool thing to do/get into. Wearing a dust mask, breathing protection will go a long way to allowing you to carry on your mission. My friend thought he was invincible, thought it was not "cool" to take those basic protections. He is now paying for it, oxygen tanks, etc. At the end of the day, live as you want to live, but, know that there may be some unpleasantness in your future with you body and health. End of Rant.... and thanks for the great videos, entertainment, showing what you do with a life time of experience.

Next time u run into that problem try useing a lighter sandpaper 180 or 220. I know it sounds backward but that heavy grit some times just scratched. Its too far apart. Finer paper tbe grit is closer together. And another thing that might suprize you exspecially on them old cars. Laquer thinner exspecially of thats laquer paint/primer. That dont look like a true DA. DA stands for daul action. Which means it does 2 things. It sands like ur doing or u can lock it in and grind with it. Im not seeing a lock on urs. I think tbats just an electric sander. Sorry im such a dork.. Ur running that fast as fk is it variable speed u should turn it down ur just eating ur paper up that way
