I have limited movement of my left leg and that’s exactly why I now have a DCT Africa Twin and a DCT Goldwing. Love the DCT and it enabled me to get back on two wheels.

I have cerebral palsy that affects my right leg and hand. I ride a Kawasaki versys 650 with the brake and the clutch run to the left side. I think the DCT with the brake on the left would be a better solution, and I'm having so muc damn fun on the little kawi...but my next bike will probably be the Africa Twin if I have the money.

@@rmsvmax It's the NDX 700 I think you're referring to. That bike is crazy for a number of reasons. One is I think they took a Honda fit car motor, cut it in half and stuck it in a bike. It's got a helmet locker where the gas tank normally is, and the tank us under the seat for better weight distribution, keeping the center of gravity low. All of this is interesting, except I don't know if a car motor would rev the way I like. When that little kawi hits 5k revs, turns into a ninja and just wants to go, man that is a helluva feeling. I do like Honda and I think they're coming out with a smaller Africa Twin, which would have that DCT and the long travel suspension I want for the crap roads here in Mexico...however, importation fees would cost an arm and leg on a new bike. It will be a shit ton to import my current bike, or I could just go with a Suzuki V-Strom 650 or a Yamaha Tennere 700 because they are the only ones available here. However, because of the pandemic I haven't been able to contact the company that makes the special lever I need....maybe they won't exist when this is all over.

@@jorgeherter You're referring to the Honda NC700X. I've had my 2016 since new. Love it. It is *false* the engine is a "cut in half" Honda Fit car motor. That was a joke told by a Honda engineer, but it continued as an urban legend. The engine is low HP but high torque... designed 100% for the bike it's in (which is now the NC750X).

The unicam and crankshaft is so unique to this motorcycle. The crankshaft and firing order is like an I-4 and it has a narrower bank of cylinders under the rider to make it even more compact. Honda really flexed their engineering trickery on the VFR and no one talks about it. Also, you can get DCT, which is badass.

I got the DCT as well and I bought it because I found a stupid low mileage example and I was thinking, too bad it was DCT. Right now I would not go for regular. The biggest thing for me is, the DCT makes this bike commuter friendly. This crazy powerful bike drives like a scooter in D. It goes all the way to 6th gear in the city, keeps you from driving like a maniac and the fuel economy is acceptable. Switch it to S or paddle and it turns into an animal. I kept the original exhaust which keeps it nice and torquey at low revs in higher gears in the city. This is a perfect bike that was totally misunderstood by the press and the market.

Very thoughtful review of a DCT. I found the biggest plus was that stop and go traffic didn't wear me out anymore. I have impared use of my left arm (nerve damage, wasting, and reduced circulation because of it), so sometimes my LH fingers cramp so bad they don't work properly. Pulling back your whole arm to work the clutch aint fun! Other positves. -Lightning-fast upshifts and downshifts. -You can never downshift too far because it won't let you. -No chafing on the top of your shoe -All shifts are smooth, so no knocking helmets with pillion. The only thing missing on my 17 AT was cruise control. It seemed silly having to use a throttle lock with the DCT. I was looking really closely at a used VFR1200 DCT. The price was right, but none of the earler DCT models had CC.

Derestrict it in 1st / 2nd with a simple inline device (off gear selector electric cradle) that simply tricks the bike into thinking its in 3rd when in either 1st, 2nd - or 3rd. install an akrapovic WITH FLAPPER VALVE. (trust me, you throw away bottom end power otherwise). There's a little dip in power around 4000RPM standard.... just install a Power Commander 4 and ask a good tuner for max power. viola - you have a beast!

It was a very nice bike, but not very popular because of the low power. But for town riding it was so practical and easy. It had two gears: low and high: no clutch. Very economical and comfortable. Top speed was only about 70 m.p.h. I have a black and white photograph somewhere. I liked the almost flat seat, which meant that I could get more leg room by sitting slightly more towards the back. I took a friend on the back to Belgium. On the return journey, we got a nail in the rear tyre and we went down. No serious injuries. Luckily, there was no traffic at 2 a.m. that night.

E P I think it does something fancy with the combined (linked) brakes. The first movement on the rear pedal only activates the rear for slow speed manoeuvres and only when you press it harder does it pull the front too. You make a very good point about the clutch and I guess the throttle would have to be butter smooth at low end also to manoeuvre slowly at those speeds.

I had a 2010 and a couple of things to note: It's a top end motor with weak midrange. In roll-on's against my wife's CBF1000, the 100hp CBF would leave the VFR for dead at anything below 100mph. The windshield was amazingly effective. On a twisty mountain ride I could wear out the front tire before the rear, because when pushed, it would push the front. I couldn't get past this and replaced it with a much better handling Ducati Multistrada, with less overall hp but better in every other category (except the windshield). I wanted to love the VFR1200 as I thought it is stunning looking, it's just flawed.

Even in AUTO mode you can change gear. 0-60 is about 2.58 seconds (if done properly lol). 6th is an overdrive type gear so 5th is all you need unless motorway. It is restricted to 160mph. The version you have is the 2010 version. 2012 onwards have traction control and better power lower down (1st and 2nd). ALso better colour (rear colour body work matches front.

Hey in the UK this bike was a total sales flop, avoided by dealers cos they did not wanna lose their shirt. Also the original bikes ran out of fuel at 120 miles which made the "tourer" title a little lame. Last year I purchased a 2013 VFR with the manual transmission and boy did she blow me away, I have owned an FJR1300 (which remains a better long distance bike as she has loads of fuel on board) but the VFR is soooooo fast I found myself at way too high speeds!!! GREAT fun.

@EnduroEspresso people are just commenting on the hype. For a bike that's supposed to be the beesknees as a ST it's pillion seat is too small along with its tank range. Sales figures prove the hype especially compared to both the Blackbird and VFR 750/800. My mate tours on a CBR but doesn't call it a ST. He's happy with minimal luggage and tank range. So basically it fell between the gap of sports bike or tourer and that's why it failed. If you wanted a tourer the Pan or Goldwing Blade for sports

Such an under rated and under appreciated machine that gets shot down by so many ignorant people regurgitating what somebody else said. Talk to anybody that owns or did own one and you hear much different opinions. Have the ECU reflashed and have Daugherty Motorsports work their magic on the forks and rear shock, and you end up with a cruise missile. Corrections - only ever had single exhaust. Never were dual pipe. Weight (wet) Manual 589lbs, DCT 613lbs. This was also the first production bike to feature the DCT transmission. The whole bike was an engineering test bed. Even the fairing design was a new design intended to improve air channeling and reduce drag without compromising high speed stability.

I had a 2010 VFR1200F for a couple years, that I did about 30,000 kms touring on. Its an awesome riding machine but for one fatal flaw...the range is awful, Honda really dropped the ball on a machine that was marketed as a sport tourer. I ran out of gas 4 times in the time I had it, due to my own stupidity of not stopping for gas before hitting 150 or so km’s on the trip odometer and assuming I’d find gas before running out, or just because I wanted to keep riding as far as I could on a tank and then getting caught out...by 250kms you know you’re in trouble and by 260 you’re on the side of the road. There are many places where you can find yourself when touring where you can go over 100kms and not find gas (unless you stick to main highways and interstates or plan very carefully). Sold it and bought an FJR and couldn’t be happier, 95%of the VFRs engine and handling for all practical purposes, 400 kms minimum range guaranteed so zero range anxiety, better comfort, better wind protection, cruise control, and regular fuel instead of premium....Loved my VFR for its good points, but couldn’t live with the miserable range.

mike a exactly, I know what you mean, there are lots of isolated areas in the west where 250-260km range just doesn’t cut it, unless you’re willing to stop every 150km or less to fill up....if you don’t, eventually it catches you dry. I wasn’t willing to stop that often and the range anxiety was real😝... hence why the VFR1200 went bye bye.😁

Hey Sean, I had a Honda-matic lol. It was ok. It had neutral, 1st and 2nd. My friend who had a Kawasaki 305, could keep up with me with no problem. I would say they were really close to equal.

I went on a poker-ride back in the day oit in Maryland. Saw this guy roll up on a side car platform in his wheelchair. He had a Honda 650 automatic if I remember correctly. I was riding my FZ 750. I rode with him for a bit and he was flying for what he had. I couldn't have been happier for this guy riding/doing what he loved, and at a very good clip.

Just got one a few days ago. Same color. Love the ride and plenty of power when I need it most. I slowed down and stopped to reach an intersection to turn into my neighborhood. A guy behind me pulls up beside me (while I’m getting ready to turn after all cars pass in opposite direction) stops and holds up traffic just to say friggin awesome bike with a thumbs up. I guess i should stop speeding on this thing.

I think your right. Honda released new VFR's in Japan that look more like the older models and they look amazing. I saw a video with the red, white and blue scheme at a tokyo show... fantastic!

V4. I like it. Enough to buy 2. VFR1200F & a CTX1300. Granted the CTX is 90° longitudinal, but still sweet. Cruisy AF. If ya want shouty buy a I4 or v-twin. Not my thing. Next bike will be a I6 or boxxer 6. So yeah, ya see where I'm heading👍😜
