I love it! This content give the fisrt half of XX c. vibe of the land-speed records - slap together what you think will work and shoot. When it goes wrong - reconsider, rebuild and try again. Lovely, just lovely.
Have you ever considered trying to use vacuum underneath the car for downforce? The McMurtry Speirling, a real car, uses vacuums to suction the car to the road and that might be something you want to consider at super high speeds and turn it into an airplane again. I think that’s going to be the trick to future records.
@hardywoodaway9912
18 күн бұрын
the McMurty isn’t a high speed car it’s uses the vacuum for traction off the line. I bet the faster you get the less effective it is. it’s an aerodynamic problem.
@Peter-nj5mv

@@hardywoodaway9912yeah that technology is just for super fast acceleration and not top speed
@R6AAO
18 күн бұрын
You're both wrong. The McMurtry fans can be adjusted on the fly. 2 tons of downforce stood still. It is limited by the motors for top speed otherwise it would be the quickest and fastest production car in the world. The technology goes back to the 70's can am series. The car could easily do 200mph+ with full assisted downforce if they could build a gearbox strong enough.
@Axiomatic75
18 күн бұрын
Worth to explore but I'm not sure that's the way to go to break speed records. Just design the underside of the car so it creates downforce. Seems easier to me.
@cogboy302
18 күн бұрын
@@R6AAO, yep. The Chaparral 2J fan car. 1970. Banned because it was a couple of seconds quicker per lap than anything else in the series. The McMurtrie is currently limited by gearing. Their car which made the headlines was geared for the Goodwood FOS hill climb. They have another prototype which is geared for over 200mph. The main issue with using fan tech in a RC speed run car would likely be packaging.
Hope you are happy in your new home kev. It must be an amazing place.

Congrats to all on achieving your PB's & lots of new hats all round. Commiserations to those who have rebuild projects on their hands.
The tacho works on an average of pulses over a period of time. If you don't give it long enough to collect enough pulses at a set rpm before the wheels explodes, your result will be entirely inaccurate. Guys it's not difficult to figure out.
Yeeeesss!!!!!!!! I’ve been waiting for this video! So cool , four motors! Hope you get the world record ( Current video time 0:58 ) I love speed record videos! Can’t wait to see the end of videos
Use carbon wheels with rubber spray. It’s a almost like a tire and you could spray it on that and it wouldn’t be super thick and probably 90% confident that it would not come off.

What an incredible Event!! Can’t wait for the next one!!!
Honestly at those speeds the differentials need to have to be partially immersed in a gear type oil to prevent the gears from disintegrating from heat and friction. The grease on the gears presumably is flung off during high speed runs due to centrifugal forces. Going to a metal case from a plastic will give it stability initially, but eventually it would wear and cause lots of play in your differential, causing lots of gear deflection in the end destruction of the differential gears. It doesn’t seem to be too difficult to fabricate a sealed diff for it. How’s your welding skills?
@muskokamike127
18 күн бұрын
yeah when I saw him lubing them up I thought, ok, where's the rest? I know it will provide resistance but there's zero lube on those gears at speed. Then you run it again, dry. Most "life size" vehicles setting records go for a pretty much complete rebuild after each run.

What an awesome event and an awesome bunch of chaps, and well done Kev on getting your 200mph cap!
I think for high speed you'd want to lathe some aluminium wheels, make some slots in them, make a 3d printed mold and overmold some 60 shore A RTV silicone (you might want to go softer or harder depending on how they behave), maybe do it in multiple parts, adding some rings and/or fiber in there. you can use a grease gun to inject the silicone at high pressure (make sure to clean it well by running silicone grease a few times through it after if you wanna reuse it.) if you've got someone with a lathe and a mill that has an indexing head, making wheels should be fairly easy. basically make aluminum wheels with slots in them, and cover with silicone on both the inside and outside by using a 3d printed mold that fits on top of it and some way to inject the silicone with pressure so it gets everywhere inside. I might be wrong, but I think having slightly heavier wheels might not be as bad compared to them failing, so having quite thick (like 7mm) rims might not be that detrimental, since you have 100HP adding 20g of inertia or so to the wheel might only slow acceleration by a few %.

Great fun! You, Sir, have introduced me to rc cars, thank you! I have been flying planes, jets, and heli's since the late 80s but never messed with rc surface vehicles. Kevin have you ever considered using hockey pucks as wheels? They don't flex and are made of solid rubber so should be easy to carve out with your lathe worth a try.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the event even if your car did 37 mph. Getting a record is one thing but it's the taking part and helping others that counts.
I'm no aeronautics engineer but regarding the infamous wheel/tyre issue...Kev I would try using the largest diameter wheel and tyre combo possible. This will mean the wheels/tyres are doing lower RPM per MPH speed. This will reduce centrifugal forces and make tyre/wheel failure less likely! regarding the cars lifting off at high speed...I suggest you design or buy a front diffuser/wing ( or even front side mounted? ) to keep the nose planted to the tarmac at higher speeds? That long flat chassis is effectively acting like a wing and the slightest bump at the front of car will raise the front just enough to gain positive pitch and subsequent take-off/disaster! lol. I think the power situation is sorted, now you just need to make the car stay on the tarmac!
Well done Kev!.. That’s no small achievement 👏🏻👏🏻
