FASTEST Racecar at Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb - British Championship, June 2023
Current British Hillclimb Champion Wallace Menzies set the fastest run of the weekend at Shelsley Walsh for the British Hillclimb Championship in June 2023.
Driving a 3.3l V8 Gould GR59 racecar, purpose built for hillclimbing, Menzies set a time of 22.93 seconds for the 914m track.
The British Championship will be returning to Shelsley Walsh 12/13 August - where times should be even faster!
The Festival of Speed hasn't seen a current British hillclimb car tackle the Goodwood hill since Graeme Wight Jnr became the second fastest driver ever up the hill in 2003, setting a time of 42.90 seconds in his Gould GR51. He still holds the 4th fastest ever time with only the VW ID.R and McMurtry Speirling going faster since! (Alex Summers, one of the drivers of the Speirling, is another current hillclimb driver and former British Champion!)
We understand why Goodwood might not want to invite the British Championship cars (too low profile, risk of being faster than 'more important' cars, etc) but we really hope they find someway to reflect the version of motorsport they are part of.

Favourite part of the weekend was one of thd Gould GR59's doing 162 mph across the line - heaps faster than anyone else.
This is super cool I had no idea they raced these on country roads!

It was particularly dusty that day. Back at Shelsley in August for more rounds of the British Championship and hopefully even faster times!

@@HillClimbTV A few years back Wallace had a massive accident at exactly the same spot at Shelsley as Richard Hammond did. I just happened to be in just the right place to watch with my camera and I managed to get really cool shots of the whole accident which ended up getting in most of the major newspapers the next day. Apparently my best shot would have made the front page of the Sun if it were not for some salacious gossip about Princess Diana lol

It is just called 'Racing cars over 2000c', sometimes referred to as the Unlimited class. The rules are very open.
Do these cars or top drivers ever complete in Europe hillclimbs?

Only really at the FIA Hillclimb Masters, which unfortunately doesn't look like it will be happening again 😞

@@BETNCORT It is the time to cover the first 64ft of the track - most venues have a split time at that point. It gives a good indication of how good the start was. A time of 2 seconds is equivalent to 1G of acceleration. Anything below 2s is good. 1.83 is a very quick start!
I see why they don't let these cars run in the Goodwood shootout now.

It would be interesting what time they could do, but I do understand why Goodwood might not want them for the Festival of Speed. Hopefully one day they will be invited, if only for demo runs, so some people can discover there is more than one hillclimb they might enjoy. 🤞
