FAST PICADO: BEST STRATEGY FOR NOTICEABLE DEVELOPMENT

Technique is an important and polemical subject. I believe all musicians show work on it, so that the tools are at the disposal of music making. Not that you should play fast subdivisions all the time. Most of the true masters have the technique, but use it only at short/key moments.
The three finger picado is a technique meant to give you fast strokes with not much stress on the right hand. It must be practiced slowly, accenting every note, with rhythmic awareness, and the lines should be viewed as patterns for efficient brain organization and language development.

    I agree, but there is a fair complaint about the fans, especially of rock guitar, over-emphasizing speed and the players overdoing it. But then, if I wasn't speed obsessed, I would not be here. lol

    i was afraid of asking for that, but man, i was speechless wit it, i saw that he does a rhythm like la pompe in gypsy jazz when its going on a fast part in its all right with me, i loved that, and i like so much the chord progressions and the passing chords that he uses, but well, i dont know if hes going to make it cuz he have private lessons for one reason, aside of that, yup, it would be so good, fantastic arrangement, i think its in cm7

    Do you think it is better to train a certain (difficult) pattern (e.g. one bar with 16 notes) in an endless loop, or is it better to make a short break in between every bar?

  • @FelipeCoelhoGuitar

    @FelipeCoelhoGuitar

    Only do short break if your hand is tired or if you are not getting it quite right. If its souding even and smooth, keep going, no stop necessary

    Thank you very much ! I’m a classical guitarist. I prefer free stroke. That was my way, never liked rest stroke, sound, phrase etc. Of course i know how to do it. But your vidéo, your perfect playing and teaching give me enthousiasm and the idea : « why not afterall ». There is not ultra speed gamme in classical ( not as fast as paco or other ). You have always a technique to make it easy: slurs, campanella etc… or you play a bit slower, or you don’t play. At 47 years old, i practiced tons of exercices of course, but when you are able to master all the repertories why work exercice more? And you teach to your pupils that exercices are not so important. Of course it’s seductive approach for the beginner. But ! It’s false. You should be aware that practice a lot exercice could kill musicality. However it’s essential. Now i think i will make one year of exercice for the beginner.

    This is another one of your great presentations,. The one where you emphasize using 4-note patterns to master 3-note picado is also great adivce - so as not to get stuck in that triplet sound.. You might appreciate this. Years of 2-finger habits cause me break the 3-finger patter, and go a-m-i-m. So, I gave up. Inspired by you, I tried writing out the fingering in 6 by 4 pattern. At fitrst, it just confused me more, unril I wrote the fingering "backward" from right to left so that it matched the position of my fingers. And suddenly, huge progress. Thanks. Once, I linked you to Matteo Mancuso. I wonder if his playing caused you to try electric guitar without a pick or try picado-style on standard jazz ??

    What if there are only 1 or 2 notes per string? Would you recommend playing the first note with index finder or middle finger? Or still start with the ring finger because it's what we're doing with 3 notes per string (O, M, I)?

    Don't you practice picados with finger planting? It really helped me kickstart my picado. You on the other hand intentionally lift your striking fingers before picking. Is there a reason for not applying planting at all? Are both schools all right and one chooses what fits him or is there something more to it? Apply one for some situations and the other for different ones?

  • @FelipeCoelhoGuitar

    @FelipeCoelhoGuitar

    8 ай бұрын

    Good point. I do believe planting is a good practice approach. Just happened not to mention it here. But still, in order to plant you must lift that finger beforehand right? So these are not necessarily two different schools.

    @@FelipeCoelhoGuitar Thanks for reply. I just wanted to share that like 8 hours of 1st exercise during last 4 days made my regular picado like 30 % better. I practice now both planting and "flying" and they both compliment each other. But the speed bursts are with planting. Got so much more control over fingers and accents and tempo. Amazing, thanks for the exercise. When done right, it makes miracles lol. And about lifting finger before planting - would have to see it in slow mo tbh. Cause it is kind of motion from alzapua - a little twitch of muscle just getting your other finger to the higher string while the other one plucked. I dont see it as lifting but just twiching it back to starting position. But that's just semantics I guess. Thanks, peace. Gonna practice.
